After moving to COVID-19 distance learning the faculty developed a project addressing current circumstances. The “Here We Are!” project challenged students to think about communicating use of a product intuitively. In addition to generating interesting ideas, this provided relevant outlet to the pandemic for all. Jacob Hawk designed the Budi Wearable Hand Sanitizer Dispenser.
Jerrod Windham’s 3rd year studio focused on design of mechanical toys. The studio project is loosely based on a vintage mechanical toy project run by Tin-Man Lau in a model making class prior to the transition from the quarter system to the semester system. It was also heavily influenced by the work of John Morgan. The 3-year-old cohort from the AU Early Learning Center visited the studio for a user group analysis.
A panel of Auburn’s most admired design professors: Jennifer Smith (ENVS), Kelly Bryant (GDES), Anna Ruth Gatlin (INDS,) Matt Hall (ARCH), David Hill (LAND), and Ben Bush (INDD) were assembled by Ben to discuss pedagogy, student critiques and the ideal studio culture. See the video at https://tinyurl.com/y8c9wycm
The workshop “Play and Storytelling: Taking the ‘Not Serious’, Very Seriously” was presented by Ben Bush at the Columbus College of Art and Design, Columbus, OH.
Ben also exhibited a sample of paper craft models from his INDD Computer class. The models use a combination of Rhino 3D, Pepakura, and Adobe Illustrator.
In April, Shea Tillman began to focus on shifting to remote teaching for the INDD Summer Foundations Studio. This intensive gateway course teaches students how to visualize concepts through the Technical Drawing, Perspective Sketching, and Presentation Rendering modules. In addition to faculty adjustments being planned for teaching and student feedback mechanisms, students will be completing over 100 drawing assignments from home.
To facilitate, David Gowan and Robert Capps fabricated mini-drafting boards custom-sized for the paper used, and J&M Bookstore supplied tools and materials for the Technical Drawing module. INDD faculty packaged 65 kits to ship to students around the country (and internationally). Students are now setting up and will be working in their own ‘home studios,’ while taking the first step toward their design careers.
Students in Ross Heck’s GDES 1210 Foundations Design I studio developed a series of alternating patterns using various analogous color schemes. See below pattern developed by Morgan Taylor.
Forty-seven students from Mobile’s Davidson High School’s Engineering Pathways Integrated Curriculum program collaborated with INDD faculty and students at the MFS under direction of Randy Bartlett. The students designed and built structural cardboard chair prototypes, accomplished during a one-day visit.
Ben Bush’s studio worked with Beretta firearms to develop new products for the existing A300 Outlander series. The project addressed areas of shotgun fit, training, and safety for smaller framed users. Students attended the industry’s largest expo in the world, “ShotShow 2020” in Las Vegas.
Hewlett Packards’ Bart Massee collaborated with Joyce Thomas’s studio to address print experiences & solutions from the perspective of a Gen Z user. Students developed a range of progressive personal memory photo printers bringing to life an ecosystem and design identity for the next generation HP Lifestyle products. Given the tumultuous off campus transition, HP was quite satisfied with the outcome. Much was accomplished through studio-based Zoom meetings.

Courtney Windham’s Intro to Graphic Design studio designed an identity/logo for the Auburn University Early Learning Center (AUELC). Students toured AUELC and interviewed staff to get insight into the history, future and needs of the program and how that may be depicted. Grace Halley’s design was selected.
In January David Smith traveled with Building Science and AU Outreach Global personnel to explore opportunity in Sekondi, Ghana, West Africa. The investigation was supported through a grant and the Outreach office. David’s objective was to explore potential for information graphic applications to a medical clinic. The Auburn team dined with the mayor of Sekondi to prioritize the team’s focus.

SIGD technical staff Chad Bailey, David Gowan, Robert Capps and numerous community volunteers have produced more than 11,400 cloth face mask parts associated with a university and community-wide COVID-19 endeavor managed through the AU Outreach Office. https://ocm.auburn.edu/newsroom/news_articles/2020/04/091044-outreach-covid19-masks.php
Jerrod Windham fabricated at home and Chad Bailey used our SIGD facilities to 3D print frames for Prusa Protective Face Shields to be used at the East Alabama Medical Center. Ben Bush also participated in this endeavor. David Gowan, Chad Bailey and Robert Capps built molds for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) face shields and mask components. The Mobile Futures Studio’s (MFS) Zach Kohrman is developing a respirator that is autoclave tolerant and can be used and cleaned through multiple cycles.
Bill Dunlop’s GDES1220 studio instituted two new projects suited for remote learning. The results were surprising in the high level of crafting and understanding by the students. One of the substitute projects involved a two-dimensional solution using the concept of contrast. This was followed by a 3-dimensional version of contrast using an all-white solution
Chris Arnold has been on Professional Improvement leave developing contacts with NASA at their Marshal, Johnson and Kennedy Space Centers.
PRADCO Outdoor Brands, Birmingham, largest hunting + fishing brands company in the world, returned for a 2nd industry sponsored project with Randy Bartlett’s 3rd year studio. They collaborated to redesign and develop a Gravity Deer Feeder for the Moultrie Feeder product line. Derrick Duke, Moultrie Feeder Product Manager, worked with 14 students in Randy’s studio to develop new concepts. Most of the students had never hunted. This provided opportunity for Moultrie to explore a “new” market / user group.
Zach Kohrman, MFS, assisted in developing computer-generated models for final deliverables. PRADCO required that solutions be fabricated using blow molding processes. This provided “real-world” design constraints. The MFS held classes in their space at the Alabama Contemporary Art Center. David Gowan, Chad Bailey, Zach Kohrman and Randy Bartlett constructed this space. MFS is an INDD off-campus instructional site. 3rd year + grad students work at MFS for a semester.
Shu-Wen Tzeng collaborated with Shea Tillman and Rusty Lay in a 2nd year 3D Principles studio. The language of design was introduced. Students analyzed relationships between product appearance, function, utility, convenience, safety, maintenance and sustainability through creation of artifacts.
