Ward 2 Block Party: Celebrating Our Diversity- the Ward 2 Block Party held on Sunday, January 21, 2018, 3-6 pm at the Cottage City Town Hall was hosted by Ward 2 Commissioner Frederick R. Hill & Friends. The theme was “Celebrating our Diversity,” based around the Cottage City town motto, “United in Diversity.” The event was a re-imagined winter version of the typical summertime block party, indoors—with music, spoken word, and the presentation of awards and tokens of recognition to those who have made notable contributions to Ward 2 and the town. As the guests arrived, they were greeted by the sounds of the Charles Rahmat Woods Jazz Group. Diana Fennell, former mayor of Colmar Manor and presently State Delegate; current Colmar Manor Mayor Sadara Barrow, along with Lois Blue, longtime councilmember were welcomed. Mr. Hill gave two performances of the spoken word, accompanied by the scintillating sounds of the jazz group.

Highlights of the program were as follows:

Ms. Shirley Lewis, 28 year resident of Ward 2, gave a short recitation on the town motto. She also addressed Dr. Martin Luther King’s belief in the interdependence and interconnectedness of global man as it relates to diversity.

Testimonials from townspeople and their decision to reside in Cottage City were discussed. Most present were residents 10 years or more. One was a 53 year resident! A newer member of Ward 2 revealed to Mr. Hill that she and her family were from Korea—a welcome addition to our town. In addition to the Ward 2 African and Caucasian attendees were citizens who represented Central America (Guatemala, Panama), West Africa (Sierra Leone), and the Philippines. Some spoke of the charm, safety, greenery, playgrounds, school magnet programs, neighborhood stability, dim street lights in the earlier days, etc. Most thought that it was affordable, accessible and “a place where everyone knows your name.”

Awards were as follow:

Special Acknowledgement (heart shaped plaque) from Ward 2 presented by Mr. Hill to Shirley Lewis as Recipient of Port Towns/Cottage City 2017 Person of the Year Award, “In Loving Appreciation” for her work with the town’s Black History Programs

The “Undaunted” Appreciation Award (plaque) was presented to Mr. Stanley G. Mosley, Sr., Cottage City’s first Town Manager, by Ms. Lewis, for his care and compassion in working with programs and residents of the town. Included with the plaque was a photo enlargement of the “Undaunted in Battle” Memorial, sculpted by Joanna Blake (deceased), formerly Cottage City resident and sculptor. The photo was donated, compliments of Ike Blake,

formerly Ward 1 Commissioner and husband of the deceased.

Community Service Award (plaque) to Mr. Demetrius Givens, 25 year resident, 3-term Commissioner, former Chair, and Commissioner At-Large, for his generous contributions of time, expertise and talent on behalf of Cottage City residents and town programs. The Tiny Library at the entrance to Town Hall and the water cistern at the Community Garden are but a few examples of some of his works.

During intermission for refreshments, Ms. Phyllis Robinson, a Ward 3 former Commissioner and Chair spoke to the guests, acknowledging Mr. Mosley for his good works during her tenure and beyond, and welcoming the new town manager, among other topics. Tokens of Recognition in the form of fruit baskets were presented by Mr. Hill as follows:

For Previous Service as Ward 2 Commissioners presented respectively to Mrs. Lou Warner (in absentia) and Ms. Donna Hayes for their dedication, service and commitment to the town. Both are very longtime residents.

“Community Bedrock Recognition” to William “Bill” Kopecky, longtime resident, for his unstinting faithfulness, loyalty and activism in the town.

“Without Borders” Community Activist Recognition (additional gift of miniature bonsai given by Ms. Lewis) to Ms. Kimberly Knox, Volunteer & Port Town Partner (also Arborist & Greenbelt resident) for identifying and implementing programs to Cottage City & residents, as well as to neighboring towns and communities.

“Community Spirit” Award was presented to Mr. Hill in the form of an Umbrella Plant, for his interest, devotion and utter positivity towards the citizens and programs of the town. Lore has it that the plant is known for its protective qualities. An additional award of a beautiful tropical plant was presented to his wife, Mrs. Greta Sadang Hill (in her absence, received by daughter -Yasmin & dad) for her unwavering support for the activities of Ward 2 and the town.

Last but certainly not least, Mrs. Brittany Gabriel, Office Manager for the town, was cited for her professionalism and her helpful, cheerful demeanor in the execution of her duties. She was presented in absentia with a beautiful plant.

Mr. Hill’s daughter, granddaughter & friends served as ushers and servers at the event. Our thanks also to Mr. Gregory Pinkney, Director of Cottage City Public Works, for inspiring Mr. Hill to resurrect the neighborhood block party. A hearty thanks to all who contributed dishes and who came out to help us celebrate our town’s diversity, talent and contributions. Submitted by Ms. Shirley Lewis, Citizen,Ward 2

Shirley Lewis, Ciudadana, Sala 2

Fake Government Officials  If you received an email, letter or phone call from a government agency (typically the IRS or FBI) and it instructs you to wire, Western Union or MoneyGram money someplace, or follow a link and enter information - don't believe it!  The U.S. government would never instruct anyone to use those methods to pay any bill or carry out a financial transaction, particularly with an overseas bank or agency.

Identity Theft, Phishing and Pharming Scammers gain access to your confidential information, like social security numbers, date of birth and then use it to apply for credit cards, loans and financial accounts. Typically, the victim receives an email that appears to be from a credible, real bank or credit card company, with links to a website and a request to update account information. But the website and email are fakes, made to look like the real website.

Loans Scams / Credit FixersFalse promises of business or personal loans, even if credit is bad, for a fee upfront. Or a scam that promises to repair your credit for a fee.

Phone scams : Fake Prizes, Sweepstakes, Free Gifts, Lottery Scams You receive an email claiming you won a prize, lottery or gift, and you only have to pay a "small fee" to claim it or cover "handling costs". These include scams which can go under the name of genuine lotteries like the UK National Lottery and the El Gordo Spanish lottery.  Unsolicited email or telephone calls tell people they are being entered or have already been entered into a prize draw. Later, they receive a call congratulating them on winning a substantial prize in a national lottery. But before they can claim their prize, they are told they must send money to pay for administration fees and taxes. The prize, of course, does not exist. No genuine lottery asks for money to pay fees or notifies its winners via email.

Phishing/Spoofing Emails E-mails that pretend to be from a company, organization or government agency but ask you to enter or confirm your personal information

Arrest Warrant Scam - Scammers create a fake Caller ID, which allows them to call you and appear to be calling from a local police, sheriff or other law enforcement agency. They say there is a warrant out for your arrest, but that you can pay a fine in order to avoid criminal charges. Of course, these scammers don't take credit cards; only a Western Union Money gram, other wire transfer or pre-paid debit card will do.

Casting Call Scam - Scammers pose as agents or talent scouts looking for actors, singers, models, reality show contestants, etc., and use phony audition notices to fool aspiring performers into paying to try out for parts that don't exist.

Scam Text Messages - It looks like a text alert from your bank, asking you to confirm information or 'reactivate your debit card' by following a link on your smart phone. But it is just a way to steal personal information

If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is!
