Syllabus for 1st Year B.A ( Honours) Course
Subject: Islamic Studies
Session: 2017-2018

B. A. (Honours) degree in Islamic Studies in the colleges affiliated with the UNIVERSITY OF
DHAKA is a four year programme. In the first year, students are required to complete six courses, five
of which are compulsory and one is optional. Each course will carry 100 marks and 4 credits. Students
are required to obtain at least D grade (40 to less than 45 marks) for an Honours degree.
There will be two In-course tests, two class attendance evolutions and a Course Final Examination at
the end of the year for each course. Distribution of marks is as follows:

1. Two In-Course Tests of 15 marks each : 15+15 = 30 marks
2. Class Attendance and Participation: 5 + 5 = 10 marks
3. Course Final Examination of 3 hour duration : 60 marks

Explanations:-
Evaluation of a courses of 100 marks:
a.
Each course will be taught and evaluated by two teachers of the Department. If a single teacher teaches
a course then the course final test must also be evaluated by two teachers, one of whom may be the
course teacher, and another, a suitable second examiner who may be either from DU or affiliated
colleges.
Marks Distribution for each course: a.
Two In-course Tests of 15 marks each:15+15=30 Marks
One test of one hour duration to be given by each course teacher at his/her convenience. Marks of two
tests will be added. In the case of a single teacher teaching the course two tests will be given by the
same teacher.
b.
Class Attendance and Participation: 5+5=10 Marks
Each teacher will give marks out of 5. Total of the two marks will be the marks obtained. A single teacher
teaching a course will give marks out of 10.
c. Course Final Examination of 3 hour duration: 4x15= 60 Marks
Two teachers will set questions and evaluate the scripts. Marks obtained in the course final
examination will be the average of the two marks.
There may be 4 broad questions or a combination of broad questions. short notes, etc.

d. Attendance in 90% or above classes may be given 5; 85% to less than 90% - 4; 80% to less than
85% - 3; 75% to less than 80% - - 2; 60% to less than 75% - 1; below 60% - 00.

B. A. (Honours) degree in Islamic Studies in the colleges affiliated with the UNIVERSITY OF
DHAKA is a four year programme. In the second year, students are required to complete seven
courses. All courses are compulsory in which one is non-credit. Each course will carry 100 marks and
4 credits. Students are required to obtain at least D grade (40 to less than 45 marks) for an Honours
degree.
There will be two In-course tests, two class attendance evolutions and a Course Final Examination at
the end of the year for each course. Distribution of marks is as follows:

2. Class Attendance and Participation: 5 + 5 = 10 marks
3. Course Final Examination of 3 hour duration : 60 marks

Explanations:-
Evaluation of a courses of 100 marks:
a.
Each course will be taught and evaluated by two teachers of the Department. If a single teacher teaches
a course then the course final test must also be evaluated by two teachers, one of whom may be the
course teacher, and another, a suitable second examiner who may be either from DU or affiliated
colleges.
Marks Distribution for each course: a.
Two In-course Tests of 15 marks each:15+15=30 Marks
One test of one hour duration to be given by each course teacher at his/her convenience. Marks of two
tests will be added. In the case of a single teacher teaching the course two tests will be given by the
same teacher.
b.
Class Attendance and Participation: 5+5=10 Marks
Each teacher will give marks out of 5. Total of the two marks will be the marks obtained. A single teacher
teaching a course will give marks out of 10.
c. Course Final Examination of 3 hour duration: 4x15= 60 Marks
Two teachers will set questions and evaluate the scripts. Marks obtained in the course final
examination will be the average of the two marks.
There may be 4 broad questions or a combination of broad questions. short notes, etc.

d. Attendance in 90% or above classes may be given 5; 85% to less than 90% - 4; 80% to less than

Aims and objectives of this Paper: To develop students' English language skills, to
enable them to benefit personally and professionally. The four skills — listening, speaking,
reading and writing will be integrated to encourage better language use.

B. A. (Honours) degree in Islamic Studies in the colleges affiliated with the UNIVERSITY OF
DHAKA is a four year programme. In the third year, students are required to complete eight courses,
all courses are compulsory. Each course will carry 100 marks and 4 credits. Students are required to
obtain at least D grade (40 to less than 45 marks) for an Honours degree.
There will be two In-course tests, two class attendance evolutions and a Course Final Examination at
the end of the year for each course. Distribution of marks is as follows:

Evaluation of a courses of 100 marks:
a.
Each course will be taught and evaluated by two teachers of the Department. If a single teacher teaches
a course then the course final test must also be evaluated by two teachers, one of whom may be the
course teacher, and another, a suitable second examiner who may be either from DU or affiliated
colleges.
Marks Distribution for each course: a.
Two In-course Tests of 15 marks each:15+15=30 Marks
One test of one hour duration to be given by each course teacher at his/her convenience. Marks of two
tests will be added. In the case of a single teacher teaching the course two tests will be given by the
same teacher.
b.
Class Attendance and Participation: 5+5=10 Marks
Each teacher will give marks out of 5. Total of the two marks will be the marks obtained. A single teacher
teaching a course will give marks out of 10.
c. Course Final Examination of 3 hour duration: 4x15= 60 Marks
Two teachers will set questions and evaluate the scripts. Marks obtained in the course final
examination will be the average of the two marks.

Introduction to Islamic Law
This course will focus on the related subject matters of Islamic law as to show that it is
an important discipline of Islamic knowledge. Major topics to be covered are;
Importance of Fiqh. Its objectives, characteristics, development and classification with
some examples. This course will highlight on the importance of the role and place of
Islamic law in modern society. Its supremacy in Islamic society problems and prospects
of its application in the society.
This course, however, is designed to make students aware of the position of Islamic law
in the contemporary Muslim world and the attitude of the different segments of Muslim
societies towards Islamic law and its application in contemporary context. Topics
included: the place of Islamic law in the legal systems of Muslim countries, reception of

B. A. (Honours) degree in Islamic Studies in the colleges affiliated with the UNIVERSITY OF
DHAKA is a four year programme. In the fourth year, students are required to complete ten courses.
All courses are compulsory in which one is viva-voce. Each course will carry 100 marks and 4 credits.
Students are required to obtain at least D grade (40 to less than 45 marks) for an Honours degree.
There will be two In-course tests, two class attendance evolutions and a Course Final Examination at
the end of the year for each course. Distribution of marks is as follows:

Evaluation of a courses of 100 marks:
a.
Each course will be taught and evaluated by two teachers of the Department. If a single teacher teaches
a course then the course final test must also be evaluated by two teachers, one of whom may be the
course teacher, and another, a suitable second examiner who may be either from DU or affiliated
colleges.
Marks Distribution for each course: a.
Two In-course Tests of 15 marks each:15+15=30 Marks
One test of one hour duration to be given by each course teacher at his/her convenience. Marks of two
tests will be added. In the case of a single teacher teaching the course two tests will be given by the
same teacher.

Class Attendance and Participation: 5+5=10 Marks
Each teacher will give marks out of 5. Total of the two marks will be the marks obtained. A single teacher

Principles of Islamic Jurisprudence
Study of Islamic legal foundation, namely, Al-Qura’n, Al-Sunnah, Ijma, Qiyas, Ijtihad,
Istihsan, Istidlal and Istilah. Legal connotation of words and sentences of these
foundation such as al-Am, al-Khas, and al-Amar, al-Nahy, al-Mujmal and al-Mufassal,
al-Haqiqah and al-Majaz al-Nasekh and al-Mansukh etc. Utilization of usul-al-fiqh in
the daily life of Muslims.
This course will cover a discussion of important concepts and principles of Usul-al-
Fiqh, such as methods of extracting the rules (Istinbat al-Ahkam) form the texts, the
evidence over which the jurists differed, the objectives of Shariah (Maqasid al-Shariah)
and conflicts of evidence and methods of resolving them. The course is also designed to
train the students to use and be familiar with the early texts of Usul-al-Fiqh. The
