Important Details

Charter FeeIncluded in stated charter rates: The charter of the vessel with all its equipment in working order, crew’s wages, insurance of the vessel and crew, and harbour and public marina fees. Nearly all Greek ports are public; in other countries, there are almost no public marinas.

Not included in stated charter rates: 5.5% VAT (value added tax), fuel (un-less stated), meals (unless stated), bar and beverages for guests (unless stated), gasoline for the tender and water toys, canal fees (if any), foreign water taxes, foreign marina fees (if any), foreign agency fees, communica-tion costs, personal laundry, personal expenses, and gratuity for the crew (5–15%).

Other Operating Costs: Advance Provisioning Allowance (APA) In addition to the charter fee, an advance provisioning allowance (APA) is to be given to the yacht prior to embarkation to cover all expenses apart from the main operating costs included in the charter fee (see above).

Generally, the APA is approximately 30% of the charter fee. This amount is usually enough to cover excellent cuisine and fuel expenses for four hours of sailing per day. Prior to disembarkation at the end of the charter, the captain will present to the Charterer a full set of accounts (fuel, provisioning, etc.), and the Charterer must pay the captain any balance owed. If the final accounting is less than the APA paid in advance by the

Charterer, the captain shall reimburse the Charterer for any overpaid balance. The captain controls all the APA expenditures, and if during the charter the expenditures exceed the amount already paid, he should require additional cash funds to be paid immediately by the Charterer.

Booking And Payment TermsThe yacht is considered booked as soon as the MYBA (Mediterranean Yacht Broker Association) Charter Agreement is duly signed by all parties, and the Charterer has wired a deposit of 50% of the total charter fee. One month before the start of the charter, the Charterer must transfer the remaining 50% of the charter fee, the VAT (if applicable), delivery/re-delivery charges (if any), and the advance provisioning allowance.

VATPayment of the value added tax (VAT) depends on the vessel's flag and the chosen cruising area. Commercially registered yachts are usually entitled to tax-free cruising although, due to EU tax legislation as well as local fiscal policies in some countries (France, Italy, Greece, etc.), in some cases VAT is to be charged on the charter fee. For example, in Greece, the current rate of VAT is 6,5% , but if the charter is less then 48 hours in duration it rises to 13%. In Croatia, the VAT is 10% but is usually included in the charter fee. In Italy, the VAT is 8%. In Spain, it stands at 18%. Our brokers will advise you on this matter in regard to your chosen yacht and cruising area.

like to inform you on the most frequently asked questions that arise

during the search for the ideal yacht.


Repositioning ChargesAlmost every yacht has a port of registry where she is based most of the time while not cruising. If you wish to begin or end your charter away from the yacht's port of registry, be prepared to pay a certain sum for her delivery/redelivery to her home port. These charges, if applicable, usually consist of two fees: the cost of fuel required for the repositioning and, if the relocation distance is considerable, a pro-rata charter fee based on the number of days required for her repositioning.

Gratuities To The CrewA Charterer or any other guest, at his discretion, may leave crew gratuities. The sum is usually calculated between 5% and 15% of the charter fee and is appropriate if the crew has given excellent service. However, it is important to understand that a Charterer has no obligation to leave a gratuity and at no time should a gratuity be solicited. The best way to handle the gratuity is to place the amount in an envelope addressed to the crew, and either hand it to the captain or leave it on the saloon table on your departure from the yacht.

ReferencesOnce you have chosen a yacht, you will be asked to provide some references from previous charter experience. Most owners of yachts over 40 m require references so that they can be assured you are a trustworthy Charterer who is familiar with charter regulations and laws. The references are the name(s)

of the yacht(s) you have chartered and the exact dates of the charter(s). Sometimes owners of much smaller yachts also ask for references. Owners reserve the right to turn down any request due to a bad charter history.

CancellationAfter the charter agreement is duly signed by all parties, the Charterer reserves the right to choose another boat, whatever the reason may be, taking over the right and responsibilities according to the owner’s consent.Should the Charterer give notice of cancellation of the signed agreement at any time before the charter period, the owner is entitled to keep the following amounts:

— 50% of the charter fee if notice of cancellation is given more than one (1) month prior to the charter start date.— 100% of the charter fee plus the APA if notice of cancellation is given less than one (1) month prior to the charter start date.

Please note that all signed facsimile or scanned copies of the charter agreement are legally binding.

Regional Chartering ParticularitiesThe Western Mediterranean and Caribbean are the world's most-visited yachting areas. The majority of luxury yachts are based in one of these locations, offering everything a yachtsman could desire. There are many


other interesting yachting destinations, but the possibility of chartering is limited by the number of yachts available. Our charter brokers monitor yachts’ relocations and they will be pleased to advise you on availability in appealing destinations.

Please take into consideration that there may be some special requirements and restrictions in certain cruising areas that might considerably limit the choice of yachts.

Chartering in SpainIf you are keen to charter in Spain, please understand that there is a very limited choice of vessels available in that country.

Following are the reasons this is so. In order to charter in Spanish waters, a vessel must obtain a Balearic Charter Licence. This is not an easy process; it involves three stages:

— A vessel must get a permit from the Balearic Government’s Department of Transport. If the vessel is over 15m in length, the owner must pay a Matriculation Tax (12% of the current value of the vessel). — An owner must obtain a Seaworthiness Certificate. If the vessel is over 12m in length, a full stability test must be undertaken and full plans must be produced by a Spanish naval architect. This involves very considerable costs.— An owner must obtain a Charter Licence.

Moreover, before a yacht can charter in Spain, a VAT of 18% of the yacht’s purchase price must be paid. Both the Matriculation Tax and the VAT apply to any charter with embarkation or disembarkation in Spanish waters. That is why only a very few yachts (usually very small vessels) are offered for chartering in Spain.


Yacht Charter in GreeceOfficially, only Greek-flagged yachts and foreign yachts with a relevant charter license may charter in Greece – that is, embark and disembark charter passengers or bunker duty-free fuel in Greek waters.

A charter license for a foreign-flagged vessel costs between 5,000 and 10,000 Euros, and you must begin the process a few weeks before your cruise in order to ensure that all formalities have been taken care of. Because of this sizable expense and considerable effort, purchasing a charter license for a foreign-flagged yacht is advisable only if you are entirely committed to chartering in Greece aboard a specific yacht that flies a foreign flag. We recommend instead that you avoid the licensing trouble entirely and allow our brokers to help you choose the perfect Greek yacht for your cruise. We are proud to say that our selection of fine Greek-flagged vessels is large and of very high quality.

Yacht Charter in CroatiaIn Croatia, only Croatian-flagged vessels may both embark and disembark charter passengers within the country. Unfortunately, Croatia offers few yachts longer than 30 meters. Yachts with a foreign flag are, however, permitted to either take on board or disembark charter passengers in Croatian waters. Therefore, either the beginning or conclusion of your charter should take place outside Croatia. Usually, the external port chosen is either Venice or Kotor (in Montenegro), located not far from Dubrovnik.

Having a superyacht at your complete disposal will not only place you among the most privileged in attendance, it will also provide excellent access to all the happenings. At the Grand Prix, yacht berths are located only meters from the racetrack. The privacy of a luxury yacht

Kalimnos is traditionally the island of divers and sponge collectors, and this profession continues from one generation to the next. Right on the pier, you can buy sponges and absolutely amazing exotic shells.

The birthplace of Pythagoras, Samos has been one of the most important islands since ancient times. It is distinguished by lush vegetation – unusual in this part of Greece – and is known for its vast beaches and delicious wine.

Simi, a small islet lying near the coast of Turkey, may surprise you with its 18th-century neoclassical architecture. It recalls the days when the island was an important trading port and home to many wealthy merchants and ship owners.

Lipsoi is one of the quietest and most traditional Greek islands. With beautiful coves, picturesque taverns and peaceful scenery, it’s ideal for serene and relaxed holidays.

Kos is the birthplace of Hippocrates. The ancient Asklipion Hospital there is one of Greece’s most interesting archeological complexes. It is open every day but Monday.

Because of its proximity to Athens as well as its natural beauty, the Saronic Gulf is an extremely popular yachting destination for Athenians. The Gulf is full of wonderful islands, secluded bays, clean water, and sun-drenched beaches. It is ideal for short-term escapes from the mainland’s noisy megalopolis on hot summer weekends.

On the island of Aegina, there are several picturesque fishing villages and plenty of cozy places for swimming. Most of Greece’s famous pistachios are grown on the island, and they are sold at small stands on every corner. The island is famous for the monastery of St. Nectar the Miracle Worker and for the well-preserved ancient Temple of Goddess Afea.

Poros, marked by a clock tower standing proudly over the port, is separated from the Peloponnese peninsula by a narrow strait. Here you will admire a unique natural landscape. In spring, when the lemon forests bloom, the air fills with a magical aroma.

Hydra has earned the title of the Mediterranean’s most cosmopolitan

island and become a favorite vacation spot for Athenian bohemia. Many beautiful mansions here are now the summer houses of rich and famous people. There are also many good restaurants and cozy taverns. You’ll notice that there is absolutely no motorized vehicular transportation on the island. The only alternatives to walking are water taxis and numerous donkeys.

On the island of Spetses, there are plenty of sandy beaches and secluded coves. The beauty of this island was described by John Fowles in his legendary novel The Magus. From Porto Heli you can go by taxi to Ancient Epidaurus, whose amphitheatre possesses a unique acoustic phenomenon. The summertime Epidaurus Festival, held in the ancient theatre, celebrates Greek tragedy and attracts the best contemporary actors: Gerard Depardieu, Fanny Ardant, Ian McGregor, and many others.

In the historical town of Nafplio, the first capital of modern Greece, a medieval fortress crowns the top of the hill overlooking the sea. From Nafplio, you can visit Mycenae, the legendary palace of Agamemnon.

The Sporades, in the western part of the Aegean Sea north of the island of Euboea, offer everything a true yachtsman could wish for: quaint fishing villages, crystal-clear water in tranquil bays, and beautiful marinas. There are 11 islands in all, but only four are inhabited: Skiathos, Skopelos, Skyros, and Alonissos. The Sporades are a must-stop for fans of the movie musical Mama Mia, as this is where it was filmed.

The Sporades are charming and scenic, with lush green pine forests reaching to the edge of the sea, mountain landscapes, and pure fresh water. Each of these islands possesses its own character and offers a special experience.

Skopelos is perhaps the greenest island in all of Greece. It is known for

its beaches and pine forests, as well as for its colorful capital city perched above the island’s main port.. Here, a jumble of whitewashed houses with tiled roofs climb up the steep hill in a maze of narrow streets and staircases.

Skiathos is one of Greece’s most beautiful islands. Unique pine forests and olive trees frame its 60 large and small beaches. Choosing the prettiest one is very difficult if not impossible.

Because of its location far from the mainland, Skyros has a climate and architecture similar to what’s found in the Cyclades.

Alonissos, with emerald waters and dense vegetation, is a perfect place for those seeking solitude and tranquility, combined with traditional atmosphere and extraordinary beauty.

Italian RivieraThe Italian Riviera refers to the coast of Liguria, an area famous for its pedestrian only streets lined with shops and its fresh seafood and pasta served in generous portions. Genoa, located on the Riviera, functions as Italy’s largest port, but also has more than its share of attractions with the second largest aquarium in Europe, its scuba divers’ paradise with the sunken statue “Christ of the Depths” along with its historic regatta held every four years in June. Beyond this bustling city port, are the pictur-

esque fishing villages such as San Fruttuoso, accessible only by sea, the lavish resort towns, like Portofino, with its pastel colored houses, and the two miles of fine quartz sand beaches in Alassio.

CorsicaThe beautiful island of Corsica, the fourth largest island in theMediterranean, has become very popular thanks to its proximity to the French Riviera. Corsica is a real cruising paradise, with a wild and often deserted coastline framed by long white beaches and waters of amazing clarity. Brilliant Corsica is the perfect choice for those who want to cruise along pristine seaside landscapes. The island’s western coast is ideal for scuba diving.

SardiniaSardinia is a favorite spot for wealthy travelers. An unquestioned advan-tage of this island is its fantastic beauty and the cleanest and clearest water in all of Italy. Those in the know go to the small village and resort of Porto Cervo, transformed by the famous architect Luigi Vietti into the true pearl of the island. Porto Cervo is at the centre of the most prestigious resort area called Costa Smeralda. Located on a natural harbor, it offers an ideal anchorage for luxury yachts, and international sailing regattas have often been held here.

Balearic IslandsThe small cluster of islands called the Balearics, are situated just off the coast of Spain in the Mediterranean Sea. The group includes the major island of Mallorca, with its cosmopolitan capital, Palma, home to one of Europe’s most celebrated concert halls, the Auditiorio de Palma. Other


islands include Ibiza, Menorca, and Formentera, each one with stunning beaches, Stone Age ruins, Gothic cathedrals and castles, such as Castell de Sant Nicolau, found on the island of Menorca. The smaller island of Cabrera, dedicated as a National Park in 1991, serves as a breeding ground for sea turtles, dolphins and sperm whales and as an important nature preserve for Ospreys, Peregrine Falcons and other birds of prey. The Amalfi CoastThe Amalfi Coast is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List, and time spent here is not soon forgotten. Treasured for its beauty, this coast is one of the world’s most visited places because of fantastic views, brooding cliffs, and cozy bays; an indented coastline dotted with small, picturesque towns, each with its own character; and beautiful lemon, orange, and palm groves. The amazingly clear sea water has also helped to make this one of Italy’s most elite resort areas.

Aeolian IslandsThis archipelago of eight small islands is truly beautiful. The islands of Lipari, Vulcano, Salina, Stromboli, Alicudi, Panarea, and Basiluzzo are all remarkable. The Leeward IslandsThe Leeward and Windward islands make up the archipelago known as the Lesser Antilles. The Leeward Islands are an ideal place for cruis-ing. Santa CruzThe second largest of the Galapagos islands and location of Puerto Ay-ora, the most populated urban center, Santa Cruz serves as a gateway to the Galapagos Islands. The research and observation station, named for Charles Darwin, and the management of National Park of Galapagos are headquartered here. The island is home to all kinds of animals that inhabit the archipelago.


IsabelaThe largest island, Isabela is dotted with volcanic cones. It is home to pen-guins, cormorants, and two subspecies of giant turtles, including the en-dangered Geochelone elephatopus guntheri, of which there are less then a hundred remaining on the planet.

San CristobalThe main island of the Galapagos archipelago, San Cristobal has two ma-jor places for diving: Kicker Rock (in Spanish – Leon Dormido), which consists of the remnants of a volcanic cone ruptured into two parts; and the island of Lobos, also the nesting location of blue-footed boobies.

FloreanaFloreana, the main location in Margret Wittmer’s murder mystery Post-lagernd Floreana, is habitat for flamingos. This island offers a remarkable journey into the bright history of the region.

Las PlazasIguanas, crabs, sea lizards, sea lions, and swallowtail gulls are just some of the wildlife that inhabits this gorgeous island.

SeymourThe landscape here is fascinating. Its unique terrain makes it easy to imag-ine how millions of years ago the island was a hidden underwater plateau that gradually rose above the surface.

British Columbia

Originally founded as a fur-trading post, British Columbia’s numerous ports, inlets and islands make for calm waters and smooth sailing, perfect for kayaking and canoeing. Other summer activities include golfing, fish-ing, whale watching and hiking in one of the 850 parks or on the West Coast Trail, a great place to spot caribou, deer and bears. The landscape includes volcanic mountains, called the Rainbow Range because of the unusually colorful peaks, marshland and pristine beaches. For winter vis-its, the area found around the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Games is perfect for skiing and snowboarding.

New England

Rich in history, culture, and nature, New England is well known through-out the world as a truly beautiful part of the United States and one of the best cruising destinations in the world.
