ADVISOR OF THE YEAR WINS AGAIN

We congratulate our Advisor of the Year, Amanda Fisher, for another meritori-

ous award. The Greater Cleveland Chamber of Commerce recognized Fisher,

of West Johnston High School in Benson, as

Teacher of the Year. Fisher received the award at

the annual Chamber of Commerce banquet.

In addition to her duties as career and technical

education teacher, Fisher ’s many activities in-

clude advising the SADD and JOCO Teen Drivers

Clubs and attending varied after-school events. A

former state tennis champion, Fisher is also the

school’s tennis coach.

Fisher spends much of her “free” time working with students, helping them with

activities and providing guidance. When asked why she chooses to be so in-

volved when she could just teach and go home, She laughed and replied, “I do

not have it in me to just teach and go home! I love all my kids like they are my

own! It makes me happy to see them succeed!” That sentiment is worthy of the

Teacher of the Year Award. Go Wildcats!

ENTER THE STOP Rx ABUSE CONTEST

The Office of the Attorney General is calling all SADD

chapters to participate in a video contest to stop pre-

scription drug abuse, and our members can definitely

rise to the challenge. The contest is open to North

Carolina students in grades 6-12. Completed applica-

tions and videos must be submitted by April 18, 2016.

Your chapter can enter the contest by creating a 30-

second public service announcement video on teen

prescription drug abuse and entering it for a chance to win a prize.

In addition to winning one of these great prizes, stu-

dents will have their winning videos featured on the

NC Department of Justice website, Facebook page

and YouTube channel.

We’re proud to announce that Nik Reasor, SADD Stu-

dent of the Year, will be on the video judging panel. To

learn more about the contest, see last year’s winning

videos, and download an entry form, visit

http://www.ncdoj.gov/stoprxabuse. Good luck!

THE WELCOME WAGON!

CARE is a coalition of Transylvania County community

partners formed in response to prescription drug

abuse by youth. They also work to prevent underage

drinking and other drug use. SADD is indebted to the

CARE Coalition for the work they have done to em-

power youth to make better decisions about very seri-

ous issues in their lives. To find out more about the

coalition and the prevention work they do, visit

www.transylvaniacare.org.

MEN IN BLACK

During the pageant, the young men were rated on var-

ious criteria by a panel of judges. Some segments of

the competition were judged on applause, but most

were judged on a 1-10 point scale.

in Virginia to crown baseball player and pageant win-

ner Tony Mack as Mr. West J 2016. Frederick, who

can sing and dance, also performed and presented

the awards and trophies during the evening.

If you want to promote positive decision making while

raising money for your club, contact Amanda Fisher at

[email protected]. She will be happy

to help you get started. School administrations vary in

their policies on fundraisers, but you have nothing to

lose by checking with your office to see if a similar

pageant will work for your school. Go Wildcats!

FORD DSFL CLINIC BACK IN NORTH CAROLINA

If you attended the 2014 State SADD Conference, you

got to participate in the Ford Driving Skills for Life dis-

tracted driving prevention hands-on workshop. This

workshop was one of the highest rated of the confer-

ence. Ford DSFL has returned to our state and will be

at the PNC Arena in Raleigh, March 29-30, 2016, to

provide an opportunity for newly licensed drivers to

hone their skills in hazard recognition, vehicle han-

dling, speed and space management. The clinic will

also incorporate distracted and impaired driving pre-

vention. All participants must have either a permit or a

driver’s license. This is a free statewide event, and

parents are encouraged to attend with participants. To

learn more about attending the clinic, visit https://

drivingskillsforlife.com/events-cat/events/state/NC.

COLLEGE BOUND We’re proud to announce that Student Advisory Board

member and 2015-16 SADD Student of the Year, Ni-

kolaus “Nik” Reasor, of West Johnston High School in

Benson, has been accepted to three colleges. Nik re-

ceived acceptance letters from the University of North

Carolina at Chapel Hill, the University of Limerick, and

Richmond American International University in Lon-

don. “I didn't actually think I was going to be accepted

into any of these schools because of their challenging

selective processes, but somehow I made it in,” Nik

said. “While I was extremely

excited about the prospect of

going to school overseas, my

parents [John and Kristi Wills of

Willow Springs, NC] were less

happy. They weren't pleased

with the idea of my being so far

away from them or being in a

completely new place and hav-

ing no one I knew around me.”

Nik plans to study biology and

proceed to medical school. He explained how he

made his choice; “After deliberating with my family for

a long period of time, I decided to commit to the Uni-

versity of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Even though

the idea of attending a university out of the country is

a really exciting prospect, the cost and the distance

just couldn't make it the right decision for me. My sis-

ter also attends UNC, so I would be extremely close to

my loved ones.”

SADD congratulates Nik Reasor on his success.

We’re proud of you, Nik!

STUDENT ADVISORY BOARD APPLICATIONS

The SADD office is accepting applications for the

2016-17 Student Advisory Board (SAB). The applica-

tion period is open until April 29, 2016. We want to

keep our state conference vibrant and effective. This

is accomplished by having bright, energetic, creative

students on the SAB. Any student who is committed to

the SADD program, has good leadership skills, and

follows through on responsibilities is the ideal candi-

date. The SAB members represent all SADD students

and should be good role models. Although the mem-

bers have to put forth a lot of effort, in exchange, they

receive an experience that will last them a lifetime. For

the SAB application and instructions, visit

www.ncsadd.org.

Remember to register your chapter at www.sadd.org.
