Lent 2011—
Encountering Jesus, Engaging Islam On Sundays in Lent we Encounter Jesus through the life-changing
conversations found in the Gospel of John. We will meet the scattered heart
of the woman and well as she meets the pure, unmovable center of love in
Christ. We will meet the ―man born blind‖ who has no name, and does not
ask for healing, and find his work, family and world turned upside down
from encountering Jesus. We will meet Lazarus coming out of tomb to
once again encounter Jesus.
On Wednesdays in Lent, we take time to have thoughtful conversations
about out our neighbor’s faith. Engaging Islam class happens from 7pm –
8pm. A brief evening devotion follows. We will focus on the history, be-
liefs and practices (the 5 Pillars) of our Muslim neighbor.
Columbarium Town Meeting
Come hear about the plans for a columbarium at Advent. This will be a
time for you to see the model, and ask questions in preparation for a
congregational meeting on May 1. The Town Meeting will take place from
9-10 a.m. Sunday April 3 in the Fellowship Hall. For more information
please contact Mark Griswold at [email protected]
PASTOR A LETTER FROM OUR
God’s beloved people,
I have been watching how we make
the love of Christ known at Advent
as we care for one another.
The Stephen’s Ministry team walks
gently beside those that hurt for a
season due to loss, injury or sadness.
Those who serve this ministry have
been trained in the art of deep listen-
ing. Theirs is the task of care, not
cure. The life stories of those who
receive care from Stephen Ministers
are held in the highest confidential-
ity. Everyone needs care. Some-
times we need it more times than
others. Stephen Ministry is here for
you. If you or someone you know
needs a care provider, call Deb
Shaffer at 425-745-0575.
We have a prayer team that holds the
concerns of members and friends of
Advent in prayer. To request
prayers, contact Laurie in our church
office, or Carol Ketz at 425-483-
3402. To become a part of the
prayer ministry, contact Carol.
Care is extended from our staff to the
community. Our staff has responsi-
bilities for programs and events but
more importantly they tend to the
well-being of our children and
youth; families and all who ache.
Our staff can be reached at the
church office.
Care happens in the relationships
that are formed with one another. It
happens both inside and outside of
the church walls. It happens as we
offer rides to those who cannot
drive, phone calls to those are hurt-
ing, and conversations with others in
a hard spot. This is Advent: Christ is
at work as care happens here. Care
is important, here.
I have a dream. It’s the dream of an
Advent Care Network. In this caring
network. 12-15 people would be set
apart to care for others in the congre-
gation. Each would have a specific
group to tend to based upon age, in-
terests or demographics. The goal is
that each person on this team would
be in touch with people in their care
– by a phone call or visit – at least 4-
6 times a year.
This idea is nothing new. Moses
implemented an idea like this in the
wilderness. Jesus sent out a group of
70 in pairs to share the Good News
of God’s love. I am also consulting
the models laid down by other con-
gregations as I develop my vision for
Advent’s Care Network.
The result is that we will be even
more in touch with one another. Our
network of love and care can expand
as more people become involved in
giving and receiving the love of
Christ.
With God’s help, and with the whole
Body of Christ at work, I pray that
perhaps one day, no one’s cares or
hurts goes by unnoticed. The old
adage is true: people don’t care how
much you know, until they know
how much you care. Let them say of
us: see how they care for one an-
other.
God go with us as we grow in shar-
ing the love of Christ.
With you on the Journey,
Pastor Kevin Bates

We walk with Jesus as he enters into Jerusalem. This procession is not a Hail the Chief. It is
a Hosanna to the Prince of Peace. Here comes the king of kings. Riding on donkey. He is
unarmed and dangerous. Then we here the dramatic turn of events in Jesus last week on earth.
Come and enter the story.
Come and taste the healing love of Christ. On Wednesday of Holy Week we gather for prayer
and compassion. We call on God’s mercy to pour upon us with abundance. We open
ourselves to the mysterious was of God’s healing.
When a politician wins an election by a wide margin, he says he has a mandate. The word
mandate comes from the old Latin word: Maundy, which means ―command‖. What does
Jesus command? Love your neighbor. Take and eat. Take and drink.
On the day Christ died, darkness covered the whole earth. We will gather to enter into the
dark sorrow of Christ’s death. We move into the story once more. And exit the sanctuary in
silence after we hear of his body being laid in a cave.
Christ is Alive! God’s mercy reverses the permanence of death. Death itself is defeated.
Because Christ lives, so to do we! Come and move into the celebration of life, love and
resurrection!
4 Advent Voice
Guys, if you’ve ever wanted a place
where you could talk with other men
about Christianity, the Bible, or
just-plain life, but none of the
weekly Bible studies or groups fit
into your schedule, listen up.
We are excited to launch a new
men’s fellowship at Advent that will
consist of an online forum plus a
once-a-month discussion group
starting April 9 and 9 a.m. at
Starbucks on Seattle Hill Road and
132nd St. SE. We know that between
family and work, many of us just
can’t attend in person at a weekly
breakfast or Bible study. By using a
web site, you can help to create a
new, virtual community just by
logging in, sharing your thoughts,
and receiving what others have
shared, all whenever you have time
to get online.
This is a new experiment for us, so
there is no set format and no wrong
suggestions. We welcome input
from each participant in proposing
topics for discussion or articles/
books to read. To get things started,
we’re looking to soon post a few
articles and suggest a few books to
kick off the sharing process.
The site is currently live at
http://adventlutheran-
mensgrp.groups.live.com/. This is a
Windows Live Group site that gives
us many options for how we
communicate. Probably the simplest
is to use the group email address to
simply email all participants
simultaneously. But the site also
allows us to share documents, post
comments to a OneNote space, or
open a realtime chat session among
members. How we use it is up to us.
To get access, you will need to
Register for a Windows Live ID if
you don’t already have one, and
please contact Hector Valenzuela at
206-497-6363 or
Brian Warren 425-765-9506
(mobile) or
Currently Hector and I administer
access to the site.
We know that living in Christian
community means that we need to
connect with each other within our
church, and technology is giving us
new ways to realize this. We’re look-
ing forward to hearing from you.
Many blessings to you, our Church
and our families.

Congregational Meeting, May 1 A special congregational meeting will happen on Sunday, May 1 following the
10:30am worship. Topics include: refinancing our mortgage loan; more in-
formation about the columbarium; a sabbatical plan for Pastor Kevin; and our
strategic plan for ministry. For more information, contact Carolyn Johnson,
church council president, at the church office.
Sabbath-Rest for Pastor Last year, our church council adopted a Sabbatical Policy. Once every seven
years, the pastor is given intentional time for rest and renewal. Our sabbatical
policy gives the pastor a three month rest.
Pastor Kevin has served Advent for 15 years. He is planning on 2012 to be the
year of his sabbatical. His plans are still unfolding. Come to the congrega-
tional meeting on May 1 and learn more about this important way to care for
each other.
Northwest Washington Synod
Assembly Voting members from over 100 ELCA congregations in Northwest Washing-
ton will gather at the Lynnwood convention center on May 13-14. Advent is
currently seeking voting members from our congregation to attend. Interested
parties please contact Carolyn Johnson at the church office.
Food Drive Sunday—April 3 Bring your bag back on Sunday, April 3rd and place it
in the lobby of the Fellowship Hall. You don’t need
the special bag to donate. Fill up your own sack or
bring a couple of cans of food. There is a donation bin
in the lobby of the Fellowship Hall for loose
donations.
Our goal is to donate 5,000 pounds of food this year.
So far we have donated 418 pounds!

50 minute class session, the teachers
will walk the class to their families
in the Sanctuary in time for
Communion.
Atrium Registration Now Open Registration for Advent's Atrium is now open for fall 2011.
The Atrium is a peaceful place where children ages 3-6 grow in God's love.
Using the Montessori method, the Atrium invites children to use hands-on ma-
terials to explore Christian teachings on the Bible, worship and Sacraments.
Using repetition in a quiet, peaceful atmosphere, children grow familiar with
the Scripture and other content, and are often drawn into reflection and prayer.
Registration forms are available in the literature rack in the church lobby, and
on the Advent website. For more information contact Marcia Bates at 425-252
3294; [email protected].
Sunday School News There is no Sunday School on Easter Sunday (April 24).
Join us for an Easter Egg Hunt on Easter Sunday after the 9 and 10:30 a.m.
services. Please help by donating plastic Easter eggs (filled or unfilled) and
candy. Donations may be dropped off in the narthex and will be accepted
through Palm Sunday, April 17.

Easter egg hunt! We will be filling Easter eggs on Sunday morning, April 17
before, during and after the services in the Fellowship Hall. Stop by any time
and help out!
Sunday, May 1 the Sunday School children will be planting vegetables in the
garden during Sunday School. Please have children wear or bring appropriate
clothing, boots/shoes, and a jacket. Jeans and t-shirts/sweatshirts are fine!
Children can also bring gardening gloves if they wish.
Nursery Update
Advent’s Nursery needs your help. Each week we rely on volunteers to pro-
vide child care for families during worship. Please help us keep this vital min-
istry going by volunteering to help. Each service we need two helpers, one of
which must be an adult (18 or over). Schedules are flexible and most nursery
helpers work one Sunday a month. Middle and High school youth also make
great helpers! Please help us keep the nursery open each Sunday.

After our meal we were led in song by David Little. We had a
great time singing many Irish tunes. Everyone had a chance to
view the mockup of the Columbarium Project. The group dis-
cussed the Wittenburg Tree project and it was moved and sec-
onded that we donate $250 to this
project.
