What is Advanced Nonlinear?

• Advanced Nonlinear is an add-on solver to the basic FEMAP Suite of Tools

– ADINA Solver run through NASTRAN

• Found in FEMAP Analysis Manager

• Gives access to additional capabilities outside of basic nonlinear

– Includes the following solution types

• Implicit Static and Transient, 601,106/129

• Explicit Transient Solution, 701

Advanced Non-Linear Capabilities

• Non-Linearities

– Geometric

– Material

– Contact Conditions

• Pre / Post Buckling Behavior

– Capture deformations occurring before buckles

– Capture and explore post buckling behavior

Demonstrations

• Thin-Walled Cylinder

– 40’ long

– 1900 lb load applied 2’ below tip

– Fixed @ base (6’)

– Advanced Non-Linear captures deformation that leads to buckle (Not captured by linear buckling solution)

• Linear Buckling predicts buckling @ 7400 lb

• Adv. NL shows instability @4800 lb

Demonstrations

• Box Beam

– Wing-Like structure

– Thin upper / lower skin

– Ribs, Spars, Stringers

– Constrained @ 1 end, vertical tip force on the other

About SDA (aka “Structures.Aero”)

• SDA was founded in 1997 and provides expert aerospace structural analysis

• We serve a variety of industries

• We specialize in composites, and developing strong, lightweight structures that are readily manufacturable

• Low level support up through developing test plans and advanced stress analysis

• Typical support programs include small to large UAVs, manned and unmanned spacecraft, naval structures

• Our team consists of over a dozen B.S., M.S., and PhD level engineers

• SDA is located in Sterling, VA, just north of Dulles Airport near Washington DC
