Advanced Mathematics Research offers promising math students an opportunity to perform community-based research in mathematics. Participants are consulting mathematicians, working with a governmental, civic, or non-profit group to identify and solve real problems. After collaborating with host personnel to identify an area of inquiry, students determine appropriate research and analytical methods. They gather data, analyze results and make specific recommendations. Ultimately the researchers will compile their findings into a report and presentation materials for their organization.

• Application and acceptance.• Shadow and assist current research

students.• Identify areas of interest and match

students with client organizations.• Affirm course and site expectations.• Students and advisor meet with sites.

Spring 2012

• Volunteer full-time at sites to gain an understanding of the organization.

• Research and multicultural training.• Present on this experience and begin

the project design process.• Identify technology support needs.• Begin building Superfan Support Team.

May Program 2012

• Collaborate with clients to identify a research initiative.

• Begin background research, survey design, data mining, etc.

• Learn statistical and other software.• Meet with advisor to prepare research

flyer and first semester plan of action.

Summer 2012

• Continue research and data gathering.• Apply analytic and predictive

techniques to gathered data.• Collaborate with fellow researchers

and Superfan Support Team to learn from their experiences and expertise.

• Write formal research paper.• Create a teaching workshop based on

the project itself and techniques learned. Share at Student Research Symposium and other opportunities.

• Create client-centered research posters, printed materials, and formal presentation.

• Get client feedback at key milestones.• Mentor 2013-2014 research students.• Seek dissemination opportunities and

share results with the community.

Professional Tools for

Professional Work

“I feel very privileged to have the opportunity to work with you...this summer and next year.  You are going to help us accomplish a great deal ... and your innovative ideas and collaborative input will always be welcome!!!”-Research Client

"Math Research isn't about knowing the right answers, it's about asking the right questions.  As a teacher, it's liberating to learn alongside my students.  Frankly, I'm in awe of them."-Brad Kohl, Program Coordinator

“Congratulations!  Your workshop has been selected for the 2013 Creating Balance Conference in San Francisco.  The conference organizers appreciated your thoughtful and engaging ideas...  Thank you for your time and your commitment to mathematics education and social justice.”  -Response to Student Workshop Proposal

Students use professional software such as IBM SPSS, Basecamp, Excel, Pages, SurveyMonkey, MapBusinessOnline, etc. They also have access to video cameras, iPads, laptops and other tools to enable them to open doors, channel their creativity, and put their ideas into action.
