PROGRAMMES OFFERED The Advanced Level Department teaches the Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination (CAPE) subjects. CAPE is the CXC equivalent of Cambridge Advanced
Level Examinations, and is recognized as such nationally, regionally and internationally. Students registered in the Advanced Level Department will take CAPE subjects ex-cept for Art and Government and Politics.
These subjects are two-unit subjects. Students take one unit at the end of their first year in the department, and another unit at the end of their second. Communication Studies is a one-unit subject which is com-pulsory for all students in the department. Students will take this subject at the end of their first year.
Subjects Offered CAPE ASSOCIATE DEGREE
The Advanced Level Department is pleased to offer to every new student the opportunity to pursue the CAPE Associate Degree. However, in order to be allowed to take all the subjects needed to pursue the CAPE Associate Degree, students need to pass the external exams in all their subjects in their First Year in the department. Students who fail an exter-nal exam will not be able to study enough subjects in their Second Year to fulfill the requirements for the degree. Students can pursue the CAPE Associate Degree in the A’Level Department in fourteen (14) areas. These areas and the subjects required to attain the degree are listed in the brochure insert. There are specific requirements for all of the Associate De-grees, but students in the department must get be-tween grades I-V in both Communication Studies (in the First Year) and Caribbean Studies (in the Sec-ond Year) and Integrated Math (students pursuing the CAPE Associate Degree in Math are not re-quired to take Integrated Math) in order to be award-ed the CAPE Associate Degree. The degree may be awarded after two years of study in the Advanced Level Department, but CXC allows a student up to five years to complete it. Further details will be provided to students upon entry to the College. Education makes a people easy to lead, but difficult to drive: easy to govern,
but impossible to enslave. (Henry Peter Brougham)
SUBJECT COMBINATIONS - ADVANCED LEVEL DEPARTMENT A student is regarded as being registered in one of the three programme options listed below if he/she is taking two subjects from that option. The subjects a student is allowed to take outside of the option, and the limitations on those subject options, are also given under the heading Other Subjects in the same column. All your subjects must come from only ONE of the columns. Any exceptions must be approved by the Head of Department. The prerequisites for the subjects are also listed. Objectives of CXC Associate Degrees To offer a qualification based on successful completion of a coherent programme of post-secondary education that allows for the acquisition of knowledge, skills and attitudes required for the work place and for contin-uing tertiary level education. To provide articulation with degree and other tertiary level programmes. To enhance marketability of post-CSEC qualifications. Does CAPE have regional and international recognition? At the regional level the University of the West Indies and the University of Guyana will accept six units, including Caribbean Studies and Com-munication Studies, for normal matriculation, while the two-unit courses in particular subject areas will fall within the two A Level matriculation standing. The UK National Academic Information Recognition Centre (NARIC), which is the only official UK advisory body on international qualifica-tions, has evaluated the CAPE syllabuses and has agreed to recommend six units (and for some areas seven units) for entry to UK Universities.
