ADVANCED DIPLOMA IN EMERGENCY AND CRISIS MANAGEMENT Start Date: January 2017 This Advanced Diploma programme is designed to prepare students for emergency management careers in the public, private, and voluntary sectors. The interdisciplinary curriculum blends theoretical perspectives with professional practice and emphasises application of knowledge to practice settings. Course Overview Over the last few years, many factors have raised the importance of emergency management and internal security and the need for trained professionals ready to tackle complex issues of both mitigation of and response to natural or man-made disaster. Emergency management is becoming more complicated and demanding. The number and consequences of both natural and man-made disasters are increasing, and public- and private-sector agencies are taking greater precautions to mitigate or prevent the effects of those disasters. Employers are looking for emergency management professionals who understand the political and socio- economic nuances of disasters, as well as how to write a continuity of operations plan and maintain an emergency operations centre. The aim of this Advanced Diploma programme, delivered by UCLan’s in-country team, is to develop practitioners to coordinate complex operations that involve many different kinds of expert and widely diverse problems that must be solved rapidly and efficiently. This programme will cover the procedures, techniques and forms of organisation used in managing disasters, crisis situations and major incidents. It will address leadership and problem-solving skills and enable students to gain familiarity with the environments, protocols and relationships involved in modern emergency management. Use will be made of case histories and scenario-based classroom discussions and exercises. The course will be a preparation for the distinct management processes that need to be used in real emergency situations, including the ability to anticipate unexpected developments and the skills of adaptation to rapidly changing circumstances.

Entry RequirementsApplicants will normally have completed 12 years of secondary schooling with a final average percentage of 70%. Applicants with non-standard entry qualifications will be assessed individually on merit. Applicants will be required to have a minimum average level of proficiency in English Language equivalent to IELTS band 4.5 with no band in any of the four skills (reading, listening, speaking writing) lower than 4.0.
