“A nation’s greatness is gauged not by the greatness of its
leaders, but by the mental and physical well being of its
citizens”.
Dear Learner,
In present times, we see a paradigm shift from conventional family and community support system as there is
exodus from villages, towns to large cities in search of better livelihood and opportunities. People live with
immense financial liabilities, work pressure of ‘perform or perish’ types, nuclear family with both parents
working leaving children at the mercy of crèches or untrained and insensitive caregivers, time constraint to
nurture a relationship, crumpled living conditions leading to adverse repercussions which we get to read
from our daily newspapers. This paves the way for a gradual decay of the moral fabric of our society and
exposes the fragile mind. Our citizens and valued human resources supposed to be the backbone of our
country suffers from post traumatic stress disorders, poor self modulation, substance abuse and subsequent
dependence, anxiety disorders, depression and suicidal tendencies.
Psychotherapies have been a proven method to manage these conditions right from its inception. To equip
psychologists with recent advances in psychotherapy made us refer to best professionals (India & abroad)
specializing in particular disorders for their input through syllabus preparation, content writing and
suggestions. We are indebted to faculty from NIMHANS & other mental health institutes who have given
their consent to conduct the course. The syllabus has been carefully designed to train the learner through
practical experience based on a sound theoretical foundation.
The study materials designed by our experts are copyrighted to safeguard ourselves from malpractice.
Learners are advised to read the study material carefully before attending skill training for optimum
learning. Practical sessions with patients are to be followed through an ethical code of conduct laid down by
the institute under supervision of our external faculty as well as internal faculty from the Department of
Clinical Psychology, Shristi.
Wish you all a happy learning!
With best regards,
Dr Rajiv Nandy

Learning basic psychotherapeutic processes
Psychotherapy offers one of the many ways people can help themselves to change. Through a
trusting, confiding and professional relationship, patients widen their range of options and
increase their ability to implement these options. Learning basic psychotherapeutic processes
asserts that, despite the noisy claims from the different schools of psychotherapy, there is
underlining set of processes that define psychotherapy itself. The basic psychotherapy
includes the stages of psychotherapy (Engagement, pattern search, change and termination)
and observing self. Learning basic processes through personal experience is going to make
visible changes in the effectiveness of dissemination of psychotherapy. Therefore, these
processes are backbone of any psychotherapy and worth it learning.
Basic listening skills
Verbal response modes and intentions
Working alliance and empathy
Inductive reasoning to determine patterns
Strategies for change

Psychoanalytic and Psychodynamic Psychotherapy
This training requires of their practitioners a thorough understanding of their own problems
in order to understand sensitively those of another person. Careful evaluation for training is
necessary, with the core of the training being personal psychoanalytic therapy or analysis by
appropriately experienced therapists. In addition, the training consists of careful supervision
of clinical work by recognized supervisors as well as an understanding of theoretical
concepts. It necessarily occurs over a long period of time. The training and practice of
psychoanalytic psychotherapy require rigorous adherence to a strict code of ethics. The
current practice of psychoanalysis and psychoanalytic psychotherapy represents a century of
“revolution and evolution,” of radical revision and gradual refinement. A wealth and diversity
of psychoanalytic thinking have produced a variety of clinical modifications that are
increasingly applicable to a broad spectrum of patients and problems. Training will involve
experiential learning, role play, case discussion, and video sessions.
Cognitive Behavior Therapy
CBT is a form of psychotherapy in which the therapist and the client work together as a team
to identify and solve problems. Therapists use the Cognitive Model to help clients overcome
their difficulties by changing their thinking, behaviour, and emotional responses. CBT has
been found to be effective for a myriad of psychiatric disorders, including depression, anxiety
disorders, eating disorders, and substance abuse, among others, and it is currently being
tested for personality disorders. It has also been demonstrated to be effective as an adjunctive
treatment to medication for serious mental disorders such as bipolar disorder and
schizophrenia. CBT has been extended to and studied for adolescents and children, couples,
and families. Its efficacy has also been established in the treatment of certain medical
disorders, such as irritable bowel syndrome, chronic fatigue syndrome, hypertension,
fibromyalgia, post-myocardial infarction depression, noncardiac chest pain, cancer, diabetes,
migraine, and other chronic pain disorders.
The training is designed to raise the competency levels of clinicians at all levels of
experience (beginner to advanced) by providing training in the essential competencies and
protocols that cross diagnostic categories. Training participants engage in experiential
exercises, master new techniques, and are able to immediately integrate new skills and
effective strategies into their practice. Main modules for this training would be:
CBT for Depression and Suicidality
CBT for Anxiety disorders
CBT for victims of rape and sexual abuse
CBT for substance abuse and dependence
CBT for Personality Disorders and Challenging Problems
Third Wave Behavior Therapies
Dialectical behaviour therapy
Acceptance and commitment therapy
Mindfulness based cognitive therapy
Behavioural activation
Cognitive Behavioural Analysis System of Psychotherapy
Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT)
Interpersonal Psychotherapy is a time-limited treatment that encourages the patient to regain
control of mood and functioning typically lasting 12–16 weeks. IPT is based on the common
factors of psychotherapy: a "treatment alliance in which the therapist empathically engages
the patient, helps the patient to feel understood, arouses affect, presents a clear rationale and
treatment ritual, and yields success experiences. IPT has clear rationale for few clients and
when this treatment matched with the client’s characteristics, it has proven very effective.
Training in this therapy will require very kin understanding of interpersonal issues from
trainees.
Family and Couple Therapy
Family and couple therapy is a branch of psychotherapy that works with families and couples
in intimate relationships to nurture change and development. It tends to view change in terms
of the systems of interaction between family members. It emphasizes family relationships as
an important factor in psychological health. The different schools of family therapy have in
common a belief that, regardless of the origin of the problem, and regardless of whether the
clients consider it an "individual" or "family" issue, involving families in solutions often
benefits clients. This involvement of families is commonly accomplished by their direct
participation in the therapy session. The skills of the family therapist thus include the ability
to influence conversations in a way that catalyses the strengths, wisdom, and support of the
wider system.
Emotion Focused Psychotherapy (EFT)
Emotionally focused therapy is a short-term structured psychotherapy approach to working
with individuals, couples and families. It includes elements of experiential, person-centered,
constructivist, and systems theory, but is firmly established in attachment theory. Emotionally
focused therapy proposes that emotions themselves have an innately adaptive potential that, if
activated, can help clients change problematic emotional states or unwanted self-experiences.
Emotions themselves do not inhibit the therapeutic process, but people’s incapability to
manage emotions and use them well is seen as the problem. Emotions are connected to our
most essential needs. They rapidly alert us to situations important to our advancement. They
also prepare and guide us in these important situations to take action towards meeting our
needs. Clients undergoing EFT are helped to better identify, experience, explore, make sense
of, transform and flexibly manage their emotional experiences. Training will includes video
sessions, case discussion, experiential exercises and role play.
Group Psychotherapy
Group psychotherapy is a modality that employs a professionally trained leader who selects,
composes, organizes, and leads a collection of members to work together toward the maximal
attainment of the goals for each individual in the group and for the group itself. Certain
properties present in groups, such as mutual support, can be harnessed in the service of
providing relief from psychological suffering and supply peer support to counter isolation
experienced by many who seek psychiatric help. Similarly, homogeneously composed small
groups are ideal settings for the dissemination of accurate information about a condition
shared by group members. Medical illness, substance abuse, and chronic and persistent
severe psychiatric conditions, including schizophrenia and major affective disorders, are
cases in point.
