Universities view the IBDP as the Gold Standard in preparation for a successful university career

Highest rate of acceptance at universities – they want IBDP students

University credit available for successful completion of IBDP

Course Selections

Making wise decisions regarding their high school course of study will set students up for success

Different Options for Different Students

Take the most demanding course in which you can be successful

Be realisticLook at your past historyChallenge yourselfTake courses that reflect your interest

An Important Consideration

IB courses last two years. So, when you sign up in 11th grade, you’re committed for two years.

English OptionsWhich is right for you?

9th and 10th Grade Courses will direct your options in Grades 11 and 12

ELD students may find IB HL English courses too challenging. IBDP however offers an English SL option

Second Language: Mandarin & Spanish

Correct planning is imperative

Can be confusing

Keep the options open

Second Language: ab initio

ab initioMeans “from the beginning” and requires that

students who register for ab initio Language courses have not studied the language before beginning in Grade 11

Second Language

IBDP Language B – Study of a Second Language

Typically demands that students have a minimum of 3 years of study in a language before entering the program. This is evidence of the rigor involved.

What you choose now is therefore very important

Second Language Chart 2010 - 2011

Second Language

What does this mean to you as a Grade 9 student? Stay with the language you are currently studying. If

you have completed one year of Chinese – continue with Chinese.

If you have completed one year of Spanish – continue with Spanish

Why?1.Universities like to see longevity2.By changing languages you may not have

sufficient background to get into Language B but you may have too much background for entry into ab initio
