UNDERSTANDING THE BIBLE: A Short Course in the Christian ScripturesRev. John Buehrens, Sundays, Fireside Room, 9:30 am
Each class session will do a close reading of one short passage of scripture, as a way of learning how to read the Bible in ways that counter oppression based on gender, sexuality, race and creed.

The Brain: New Research Findings with Dr. John Brimm 6PM, Fireside Room (TODAY) A Humanists & Non-Theists EventTechnological advances have made it possible for scientists to examine the brain in ways never before possible. In the last several years, dramatic new discoveries shed light on how our brains work in health and illness, including a remarkable new discovery that unlocks the mystery of schizophrenia. Dr. John Brim will review these and discuss the implications for humankind. John is a psychiatrist and anthropologist based in San Francisco. The potluck starts at 6PM (bring something to share if you can) and the talk begins at 6:30 PM.

Cultural Encounters - Featuring Artworks by Niki Stefanelli Artist Reception Sunday, March 5, 12:30 PM - 3PM, King RoomsThe display includes over 50 works of art documenting the common humanity of people around the world. In celebration of Women’s History Month, The TSK Room features photography highlighting women’s daily lives in Cambodia, Cuba, Ghana, India, Myanmar, Turkey, United States and Vietnam. Stefanelli’s exhibit continues into the MLK Room with a focus on daily spiritual practices from Buddhist and Hindu traditions in Cambodia, Myanmar and India. The gallery features mono-prints from Japan and mixed-media works from Cuba.

The Rev. Diane M. W. Miller was ordained by this congregation 40 years ago, in 1977. She is a native of Minnesota and a graduate of Macalester College and Harvard Divinity School. She served UUSF as Assistant Minister, then Interim Senior Minister after the departure of the Rev. David Rankin. She stayed on as Associate Minister, then served as Minister of First Church in Belmont, MA, before becoming UUA Director of Ministry, 1993-2001. She was a candidate for UUA President that year, later serving as an interim minister and then as Minister of the First Religious Society of Carlisle, MA. She is now retired, living in Kansas, enjoying being a grandmother.

ABOUT TODAY'S GUEST MUSIC
Andrés Vera, a soloist, chamber and orchestral musician, has performed Classical and Baroque cello throughout the United States, Europe, the Caribbean and Asia. Andrés is a founding member of San Francisco’s acclaimed Cello Street Quartet and the newest member of the Grammy-nominated Quartet San Francisco. A native of Puerto Rico, Andrés brings a rich mix of cultural influences to his playing. During the summer of 2013, he joined the American Bach Soloists Academy and was a featured soloist during their summer season. In May of 2014, Andrés and his Cello Street Quartet traveled to Russia, Kosovo, and Hungary with the American Music Abroad program in cooperation with the United States Department of State. In July of 2015, he joined Quartet San Francisco. Andrés is available to perform and collaborate because he is well connected with Bay Area artists and can readily assemble a group of musicians suitable to any concert, whether in-home, on a formal concert stage, or in a cabaret setting.

Earl's famous pot pies, both chicken and vegetarian, plus salad, wine and dessert. Suggested contribution: $10. No one turned away. In addition to Rev. Miller, our honored guests will be the 48 individuals who have been members of UUSF since before 1981. Our 20s and 30s group is joining us as well. Visiting stewards are invited to get their food and go to their training meeting in the Fireside Room. Others are asked to pitch in with serving and clean-up as willing and able.
