The Plymouth Whitemarsh High School Adult Evening School (PWHSAES) is a nonprofit organization sponsored by the Colonial Board of School Directors. Courses are designed mainly for the self-improvement and enjoyment of the students. No high school or college credit is given. All classes are held in Plymouth Whitemarsh High School (PWHS), 201 E. Germantown Pike in Plymouth Meeting, Pa. The 2016 Fall Session begins the week of September 19. Classes run for 10 weeks or as stated in the course description. There will be no PWHSAES classes when the Colonial School District (CSD) is closed for a holiday or inclement weather. There will be no classes on October 3, 12 or November 23. School cancellations will be posted on the District website atwww.colonialsd.org. A voice message will also be posted at 610-834-1671. Senior citizens aged 65 or older residing within the CSD may attend one PWHSAES course free of charge OR AT THE LISTED REDUCED GOLD CARD RATE, providing enough tuition-paying students register for the class. Simply fill out the registration form and check the “Senior Citizen” box. The teacher can verify proof of age. Any course with limited enrollment will be closed when its quota is reached. Textbook, laboratory and material fees are not included in the tuition unless stated. The instructor will collect those fees at the first meeting. The Board of Education of the CSD, its members individually and its agents cannot be held liable for personal injury or property damage that may be suffered or sustained by reason of the use of the school buildings, the equipment, or appointments herein while attending courses offered by said Board in the PWHSAES. Registrants providing an email address will receive confirmation the week before classes begin. CHECK YOUR SPAM FOLDERS as email will be sent in bulk. 2. Please DO NOT STAPLE CHECKS to your registration form. 3. Refunds or transfers will be allowed only if a course has been cancelled. 4. We do not accept credit cards. 5. PHOTOGRAPHY: The Basics (6 CLASSES)Wednesdays beginning September 21, 7:30-9, cost $60This course will assist you in understanding photography’s technical and aesthetic aspects including: using digital cameras, managing your photos on your computer, composing images and discussing photographs, art and more. 3. BEGINNING KNITTING (3 CLASSES)Tuesdays, October 4, 11, & 18, 7 to 8:30, Cost $45This class will teach knitting basics: the knit stitch, purl stitch, casting on and binding off. By the end of the classes, you will have the skills to make a scarf or hat. Bring a set of knitting needles (size 6, 7, or 8) and worsted weight yarn. GRAIN-FREE BAKING (1 CLASS)Monday, September 26, 7–8:30, Cost $35*Whether you are starting a Paleo diet, are gluten-free, or just looking to cut back on grains in your diet, this workshop will help you tackle the challenge of grain-free baking. Through a combination of demo, lecture, and hands-on learning, students will create delicious muffins, breads and other baked goods. We will also go over tips on how to use and store grain-free flours like almond, chest-nut, and coconut. 6. WINTER VEGETABLES (1 CLASS)Monday, October 10, 7–8:30, Cost $35*Think that tasty vegetables disappear once the farmer’s markets shut down for the season? Think again! There are a number of seasonal winter vegetables that grace our plates once the cold weather kicks in. In this one night workshop you will learn new ways to serve old favorites (squash, beets, brussel sprouts) and even try out some unfamiliar vegetables (sunchokes, celeriac). From stews to salads, we will discuss the many ways to prepare these vegetables into seasonal delights. 18. BEGINNING GUITAR (10 Classes) Wednesdays beginning September 21, 8–9, Cost $85, Gold Card Cost $70Spend 10 weeks studying with one of Philadelphia’s best-known and respected guitar teachers. Learn guitar fundamentals and have fun in the process! The class is directed at absolute beginners, but if you have been doing some self-instruction and have questions, this will give you a chance to get some answers, learn some theory, play some music and have some fun in the process! As for repertoire: Classic folk, alternative and pop tunes will be featured. Simple two and three-chord songs by Johnny Cash, Hank Williams and Bob Dylan will be the focus of the first few sessions. More complex chord progressions appear in later sessions. With each song will come some basic theory and exercise practice. By the end of the first half of the course you will know and be able to play and name all of the notes on the guitar. You will understand how chords are structured and why certain chords sound good together. You will learn the left hand fingering sequences that produce the chromatic, major and pentatonic scales that all good guitar players practice. Rhythm is essential, so the metronome and how to use it will also be explored. Basic strumming styles and fingerpicking patterns will be introduced with specific songs but they will always be connected to time and how to count it. This course will give you a good overview of the guitar, add several classic songs to your repertoire and give you a clearer idea of how to continue your study and improve your musicianship in the future.Bill Alberts, Instructor, Library

CARD GAMES23. CANASTA (10 Classes)Mondays, beginning September 19, 7–9, Cost $60, Gold Card Cost $30Canasta is a card game which is believed to be a variant of the rummy family. It is played with four players in two partnerships with two standard decks of cards. Players attempt to make melds of seven cards to make a canasta. Score is kept. In this class, students will learn how to play canasta, as well as the strategy of the game. CHINESE MEDICINE FOR BETTER HEALTH (1 CLASS)Tuesday, September 27, 7–9, Cost $25This class will discuss the history and the theory of Chinese Medicine and delve into the assessment techniques used to diagnose imbalance. Learn how Daoist and Confucian theory shaped the medicine and introduced the idea of treating body mind and spirit. 30. BREATHE BETTER FEEL BETTER (1 CLASS)Tuesday, September 20, 7–8, Cost $10Learn easy breathing styles to help yourself feel better, reduce stress, quell anxiety and diminish pain. These techniques will also help you to rest more thoroughly and sleep more easily. Many scientific studies prove that slower breathing helps us feel better. This is non-toxic and the only side effects are good ones. This basic act of just sitting and giving your attention to your breath is a great and calming gift to yourself.
