Living in a university environment can be a

very rewarding experience. Yet, there may

come a time when a student living in a uni-

versity’s residence hall may want to try liv-

ing off-campus. Before making the transi-

tion, there are a few things students should

know.

1. Understand your leasing agreement.

When moving into a new place a document

must be signed specifying obligations as a

lessee. Make sure to read the document

thoroughly and even having an attorney

look over it is not a bad idea.

2. Define the best area of town to live in.

Defining the perfect area of town to live in

can be based on various criteria including

proximity to school, family, friends, and

work. Once an area of town has been iden-

tified that suits your personal needs, re-

search statistics about the area such as de-

mographics and crime rates to see if that

area is still the best fit for you.

3. Is the move really cost efficient? Surpris-

ingly, not everyone “saves” by moving off-

campus. Some apartments require additional

fees along with paying the monthly rent. For

example, some apartments require trash pick

-up fees, a separate water fee, or even a re-

quired cable television fee.

4. Pick roommates wisely. One of the first

approaches to dealing with the new fees

from moving off-campus is to get a room-

mate, but make sure to find the right room-

mate. Even if you decide to stay with some-

one who was a dormmate does not make

them a good roommate. Remember there are

now bills that have to be paid and agreed

upon that was not a factor as a dormmate.

Make sure to discuss living and financial

expectations with a possible roommate prior

to signing a lease.

5. Renter’s Insurance. An apartment complex

may have insurance for damages that could

possibly occur for a building, but this does not

always cover personal belongings. There are

ways to find reasonable renter’s insurance and

you can start with asking a potential landlord

about insurance companies they would suggest.

To learn more about living off campus, The

University of Memphis and ACSS is hosting a

Centennial Off-Campus Housing Fair which

offers students the opportunity to talk directly

to leasing agents. The event is March 21 from

9am-2pm in the University Center Ballroom

and is open to the public.

ADULT AND COMMUTER STUDENT SERVICES MISSION

The mission of the Adult & Commuter Student Services office is to provide a supportive environment for non-traditional and commuter stu-dents that promotes intellectual, social and academic growth and development through services and programs that foster lifelong learning.

The spring season is just around

the corner. Along with changing

our outerwear from coats to cool-

er attire, a new season is also a

time to reflect on our inner self

and get re-energized about the

positive things that lie ahead.

Spring Break is here!!! What are YOU going to do?

It is my hope that you would take time out to enjoy the

break. Perhaps sleep in late, travel or just relax with

family and friends. If you need some spring break ide-

as, read the article “A Wonderful Break, Right at

Home.” Everyone is not able to travel for the break, but

it doesn’t mean you cannot your time off.

Upon your return to school, there will be lots of exciting

activities for you to get involved in. On March 21, our

office is hosting its annual “Off Campus Housing Infor-

mation Fair.” Be sure to look for signs

around campus that tell you the time, place, and all

about our free giveaways.

Tigers get ready for some football! Our interview with

Coach Justin Fuente reveals his excitement for the Blue

and Grey football game on March 31 and he wants you

there. This issue of the newsletter also features high-

lights from our “Love and Relationships” seminar,

housing fair vendor attendees, and much more.

In closing, enjoy reading the newsletter and see you af-

ter spring break!

Sincerely,

Joy Stout

JAN/FEB 2011

THE SPOTLIGHT Before Coach Justin Fuente even stepped foot

on the campus of the University of Memphis

as the new head football coach, he was hand-

ed a challenge.

After the Tigers’ less than impressive 2011

football season, Tiger football fans were

looking for a savior. Fuente decided he would

be the brave soul to accept the test.

“I’m excited to be here and the University

of Memphis community,” Fuente said. “It’s

obvious there is a lot of work to do to rebuild

the program the correct way, but I believe in

these kids.”

Although, the team has yet to ‘suit up’ for

Fuente for a full practice, he believes the

team has some great abilities and they can

excel at football.

“We’ve got a good group of kids and they

are currently buying into the principles we are

teaching which is accountability, hard work

and discipline,” Fuente said. “We also have a

good group of recruits from all different

backgrounds and skill sets and it’s our hope

that we can see them grow and prosper.”

As Fuente faces another modification in the

football program, Tiger sports moving to the

Big East Conference in 2013 and the expecta-

tions that come with it, he doesn’t even

flinch.

“Regardless of what conference we are in or

who is on the football schedule, our primary

focus is on the team,” Fuente said. “My goal

is to get this program back healthy.”

Fuente’s determination and tunnel-vision-

like focus on the goal ahead is expected.

Fuente has always been competitive, channel-

ing that energy into sports and education

while growing up.

“I wouldn’t throw my transcript out there and

say it would knock people’s socks off, but I

was competitive in the classroom,” Fuente

said. “I enjoyed being a student athlete and I

had a strong family foundation that encour-

aged education.”

Fuente’s great foundation carries over into

his recipe for coaching. Tiger fans will get

their first taste of his coaching style during

the 2012 Blue-Gray Game. The game will

be held on March 31 at noon in the Liberty

Bowl Memorial Stadium. It’s a game Fuente

is looking forward to.

“The recipe for winning football has never

changed, it’s still about hard work, discipline,

accountability and attitude and we are teach-

ing the team these skills,” Fuente said. “This

spring I’m looking forward to spreading the

word about what the team is going to do in

the classroom, in the community, and on the

football field.”

Coach Justin Fuente

Candace Franco and Eric Shultz from

the University of Memphis’ Career and

Psychological Counseling Center gave a

eye-opening seminar about healthy rela-

tionships. The presentation was as part of

the university-wide civility campaign and

educational workshops given by Adult

and Commuter Student Services. Here are

a few highlights from the seminar using

our #umrespect Twitter hashtag and stu-

dents attending.
