Our Mission Yorkville East Middle School prepares students to be critical

thinkers, effective problem solvers and powerful communicators in a rapidly changing 21st century world. We engage students in an

education that broadens their interests and deepens their understanding of the world around them in both the social and

physical sciences. Through academic rigor, student voice, collaboration, self-direction and empathy, our students will have

the confidence, tenacity and skills for success.

Core Values Academic Rigor is our commitment to challenging, enriching education that deepens thinking about the world around us.

Student Voice describes our commitment to hear and enhance our students’ ability to express their thoughts, opinions and findings in a professional manner through individual and collective action.

Collaboration is the commitment to teamwork and learning from one another.

Self-Direction is the belief that the role of education is to provide the knowledge and confidence to choose an academic path and build on interests, ask questions and investigate the world.

Empathy is our deep regard for the people and the world around us, treating everyone and everything with compassion and understanding.

Curriculum  In each of our content areas, our students engage in a curriculum that supports student voice, self-direction and project-based learning. In ELA, we will be utilizing Teacher’s College Reading and Writing Project curriculum. In math, we will use Connected Math Project 3. In social studies, we will be creating our own curriculum utilizing Stanford’s Reading Like a Historian curriculum and the New York State Scope and Sequence, and in science, we will utilize Glencoe’s Science Modules and Lab Aid Kit. In addition to the core content classes, there are 2 half-year interdisciplinary courses at MS 177. The first course is a humanities course that fuses key academic skills in ELA and Social Studies. The second utilizes a STEM-based curriculum. These courses promote analysis of current, modern-day occurrences and scientific processes, in which students create and develop their own experiments, track the development of world events and present their findings.
