Up to 1987 ADMARC was a sole buyer of smallholder produce. This monopoly was removed with a controlled liberalization of agricultural trade. In 2003, the ADMARC Act (1971) was repealed and ADMARC was incorporated as a Limited liability company with government owning 99% of the shares. CORPORATE PROFILE ADMARC LIMITED Rice Rice is a cereal crop grown as both a food crop and cash crop which is sold locally and exported. Malawi produces some of the best rice varieties such as Kilombero, Super Faya and Long Grain, famous for their aroma and taste. The crop is harvested in May and November. ADMARC has a Rice Milling plant in Liwonde where paddy rice is milled to add value. Pulses Beans are a good source of protein produced for the local and export markets. They are ready for harvest by March/April. The red and white speckled sugar beans ‘nanyati’ are in high demand. Soya Beans are used for human and livestock consumption. Soya bean flour is used as a component in human food such as food porridge to improve the diet of malnourished children. Soya beans are harvested in April to May. ORGANISATIONAL SET UP

The corporation has its head office in Limbe and three administrative offices in Limbe, Lilongwe and Mzuzu. The regional offices coordinate all primary marketing activities in the three region which includes buying of agricultural commodities from smallholder farmers and conducting local sales. The corporation operates over 700 markets and 9 major depots which are scattered all over the country. There is also a rice mill and groundnut factory at Liwonde and one ginnery in each of the three regions of the country.

Commodity trading at both local and exports markets is coordinated by the marketing office which is based at the head office. The department determines the market requirements for various crops through trade fairs, trade missions and business trips.

The Role of ADMARC1.0 Value Adding and Export drive

The corporation has installed three modern ginneries at Ngabu, Balaka and Karonga for ginning seed cotton.

Cotton LintCotton Lint is used in textile manufacturing and is sold on the export market. Cotton seed is used for oil extraction whose byproduct, the cotton seedcake is used in livestock feed production. Cotton seed is also sold locally and on the export market.

2.0 Primary Marketing

To buy produce from smallholder farmers at good price in order to encourage them to grow more in subsequent season

Groundnuts

Chalimbana groundnuts are particularly suitable for the confectionery trade being entirely hand shelled, picked and selected. It has low oil content with good flavour.

CG7 groundnuts which are also hand-shelled picked and selected are basically oil nuts and are used for oil extraction and peanut butter manufacturing.
