Barium & Chemicals, Inc. has been privileged to provide our clients with surface area analysis

since the fall of 2012. We feature the use of the Gemini VII and FlowPrep 060. Surface area can

have an impact on production and reaction rates. It correlates to the burn rate of chemicals

providing another means for determining accuracy. The saturation of the color, film adhesion

properties, and variation of brightness are all affected by surface area. Dissolution rates often

must be controlled and surface area can assist in acquiring this proper rate.

Multipoint surface area using Nitrogen gas .............................................................. $175

Barium & Chemicals, Inc. specializes in Inorganic elemental analysis with the purchase of our

Optima 7300 DV during the summer of 2010. The ICP-OES provides trace metal analysis

delivering ppm levels. Equipment is maintained through ERA trace metal standard analysis.

Perkin Elmer advised maintenance is run daily to ensure stable instrument function. The ICP-OES

remains the main source of information for impurities found within all materials analyzed by

Barium & Chemicals, Inc. staff.

Approximately $15 per element. Additional sample preparation is extra per sample. Prices

vary due to different methods available (minimum $10.00). Dilutions are $10.00 extra

per sample (includes dilution and reanalyzing sample).

The Microtrac S3000 allows the client to see the particle size distribution. Barium & Chemicals,

Inc. purchased the Microtrac during the fall of 2007. This distribution is further translated into

valuable information that provides the feedback that clients require to make imperative

decisions. Microtrac S3000 technology uses scattering of light to determine particles size. Laser

light is “diffracted” at angles according to the sizes present. Smaller particles scatter light at

wider angles and larger particles scatter light at smaller angles. The light is scattered at various

angles, but also at various intensities. The intensity of light scattered at various angles provides

a measure of the amount of particles present at the various sizes.

Barium & Chemicals, Inc. is very proud to announce the addition of a new Ro-Tap room. The

room was built in the Fall of 2015, exclusively to provide a clean, focused area to perform sieve

analysis. Barium & Chemicals, Inc. has been leading the industry in sieve analysis for Inorganic

products since 1937.

Sieve measurements rely on the ability of particles to pass through a screen which has a number of holes

that are formed by crossing wires made of metal. The holes provide an opening of a size given in microns.

The sieve size, provided in mesh, is determined by the number of holes per square inch (US Standard).

Several screens are often used where each has a specified, but different, mesh or micron size. Each screen

provides a means of separating one class of particles from another. Generally, particles that pass though

(smaller than) the screen holes are said to be below a screen size and those that do not are said to be

retained. The net result if many mesh sizes are used, is a distribution of mass as a function of screen size.

Thus, any particle that passes through the screen is considered to be smaller than the size of the hole.

Sieves are maintained and calibrated according to the W.S. Tyler schedule.

Fisher Sub-Sieve Sizer

In order to determine particle size using the Fisher Sub-Sieve Sizer, the assumption is made that

all particles are perfect spheres. This is based upon Stocke's Law. This method is not comparable

to the Laser Diffraction method, which takes into account all shapes of particles. The Fisher Sub-

Sieve Sizer method is a mathematical assumption. This is a different vantage point than the laser

light diffracting method which diffracts light at angles according to the sizes present taking into

account all particle shapes. The Fisher Sub-Sieve Sizer is the standard method of choice for

Military Specifications and certain client applications. Barium & Chemicals, Inc. has maintained

the current Fisher Sub-Sieve Sizer for over 25 years.

Beyond the scope of instrumentation, Barium & Chemicals, Inc. has the ability to perform wet

chemical analysis according to Military Specification, ACS Specification, Defense Standard,

ANALAR, and proprietary specifications. These specifications are maintained through the

recently updated Accuterm System. Our Laboratory is equipped with four Chemists and one

Laboratory Technician.

Process Controls, Protocols & Procedures

Barium & Chemicals, Inc. is annually audited under the ISO 9001:2008 regulations by United

Registrar of Systems. Our Laboratory is held to the following standards and audited against

these same procedures. Copies are available upon request.

QMP-001.2 Quality Planning

QMP-002.2 Documentation

QMP-003.3 Control of Documents

QMP-004.3 Control of Quality Records

QMP-006.2 Competency, Awareness, and Training

QMP-023.3 Control of Non-Conforming Product

QMP-024.2 Analysis of Data

QMP-025.2 Continual Improvement

Barium & Chemicals, Inc. features an Industrial Laboratory. The cleanliness is maintained

through the care and training of the analysts that work within this facility. Proper precautions

are displayed by each employee to avoid contamination and provide accurate results. Material

is inspected upon entry into the Laboratory for quality analysis. This specific inspection provides

immediate feedback to Production regarding the overall visual quality of the material. Pictures

are taken of any item that may be determined visually out-of-specification. Notification and

documentation are made available for all pertinent personnel. If there are any egregious

incidents sited, Production is notified and held responsible to take proper steps to rectify the

situation. Documentation and notification are a consistent part of the analytical process and are

logged within the internal non-conformance system. The Laboratory is responsible to maintain

the integrity of the sample and the entire analysis required.
