Confinement Site Manure

Applicator Training, February 6 Confinement site manure applicators should plan to attend a two-hour workshop offered by Iowa State University Extension and Out-reach and the Iowa Department of Natural Resources to maintain or renew their confinement site manure applicator certification on Mon-day, February 6 from 1:30 – 3:30 p.m. at the Adair City Hall. The workshop serves as initial certification for those applicators that are not currently certified, recertification for those renewing licenses and as continuing education for those applicators in their second or third year of their license. The 2017 Confinement site program will include rules for applicators as well as land-application and setback distance requirements, wa-ter quality and applying manure into cover crops, and application equipment uniformity. Operators must be certified to handle, transport, and apply manure if the confinement livestock operation has more than a 500 animal unit capacity unless the manure is applied by a commercial manure ap-plicator. The certification fee is $100 for a three-year certificate. This fee is paid when applicators initially get certified and then every three years when they re-certify to apply manure. Confinement site applicators are also required to pay an annual edu-cation fee of $25. All fees and application forms must be sent to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources to complete certification re-quirements. Applicators have another option for certification; online certification, which an applicator can take their training on-line at DNR MAC eLearning site at https://elearning-dnr.iowa.gov/. The applicator will need to sign-in and get an A&A account. Applicators are encouraged to complete certification requirements annually prior to March 1 to meet certification deadlines and avoid being assessed a $12.50 late fee for re-certification. For more infor-mation about meeting dates and locations, or to schedule an ap-pointment to attend training, contact the ISU Extension and Out-reach Adair County office at 641-743-8412 or visit http://www.agronext.iastate.edu/immag/certification/confinementsitebrochure.pdf to see the 2017 workshop schedule.

Treat Trees in Early Spring to Prevent Emerald Ash Borer

Emerald ash borer continues to move into Iowa, with the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship announcing on Nov. 28, 2016, that the invasive beetle that attacks and kills all ash spe-cies has been confirmed in 39 counties, including Adair. Iowa State University Extension and Out-reach specialists have released an updated version of the publication "Emerald Ash Borer Manage-ment Options" (PM 2084) to provide tips for preventive treatments for healthy ash trees. “There have been new developments in emerald ash borer research so we wanted to update this publication to reflect that new information,” said Mark Shour, extension entomologist with Iowa State University. “The publication provides the correct time for EAB treatments, the correct products to use and any environmental precautions that should be considered before treatment. It gives recommen-dations to homeowners and professionals alike.” Finally, the publication directs readers on how to identify ash trees, determine if a tree shows signs of EAB and evaluate the tree’s health. “It is very important for homeowners to know that over-the-counter products against EAB must be applied early in the spring; if applied any later they will just be wasting money. Professional treat-ments by certified pesticide applicators, however, can be made throughout the growing season. No homeowner soil treatments should be made within 25 feet of flowering plants or vegetable gardens as a protection against harming pollinators.”
