The designation means that our center provides an aggressive, multidisciplinary approach to treating injured patients transferred to us from across Mercer County and adjacent parts of Somerset, Hunterdon, Burlington, and Middlesex counties as well as nearby areas of Pennsylvania. HOPEWELL Capital Health Medical Center - Hopewell offers our STARS program. STARS, our Surgical Trauma and Acute Resuscitative Service program, includes our acute care surgeons who are on call to perform emergency surgery. When necessary, they can facilitate seamless transfers to our Level II Trauma Center. The STARS program also includes the new hospital’s Surgical Intensive Care Unit staffed by surgical intensivists (surgeons trained in acute care surgery as well as specially trained physician assistants, nurse practioners and nurses) to provide an advanced level of 24/7 observation before, during and after surgical procedures as well as emergency bedside procedures when necessary. Acute care surgery is a relatively new surgical field that incorporates training in surgical critical care, trauma surgery, and emergency general surgery to urgently assess and treat patients with general surgical emergencies. Most emergencies that require an acute care surgeon are abdominal conditions including, but not limited to: Abdominal aneurysms (pre and post repair) Acute Appendicitis Cholecystitis Diverticulitis Liver/GI masses (pre and post resection) Pancreatitis Intestinal obstruction Intestinal ischemia Intra-abdominal sepsis Incarcerated hernias Perforated internal organs MULTIDISCIPLINARY AND COLLABORATIVE CARE In addition to having acute care surgeons at both Capital Health hospitals, our surgeons also collaborate, when necessary, with expert physician specialists from other Capital Health programs without having to transfer you or your loved one to another hospital far away. The Bristol-Myers Squibb Trauma Center at Capital Health Regional Medical Center in Trenton is a New Jersey State designated Level II Trauma Center. The designation means that our center provides an aggressive, multidisciplinary approach to treating injured patients transferred to us from across Mercer County and adjacent parts of Somerset, Hunterdon, Burlington, and Middlesex counties as well as nearby areas of Pennsylvania.

HOPEWELL

Capital Health Medical Center - Hopewell offers our STARS program. Dr. Eboli received his medical degree from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ)—Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in Piscataway, NJ. He completed his general surgery internship at Monmouth Medical Center in Long Branch, NJ and general surgery residency at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick, NJ. He is board certified in general surgery.

Dr. Kalina received his medical degree from New York College of Osteopathic Medicine in Old

Westbury, NY. He completed his internship at Saint Claire’s Hospital/St. Vincent’s Midtown Hospital in New York City and his surgical residency at Saint Barnabas Hospital in Bronx, NY. He received his fellowship training in surgical critical care and acute care surgery at Christiana Care Health System. He is board certified in surgical critical care and general surgery by the American Osteopathic Board of Surgery.

Prior to his arrival at Capital Health in 1999, Dr. D’Amelio was associate director of the Level I Trauma Center at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick, NJ. He received his medical degree from Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia after being named to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society in his junior year. He completed a NIH Summer Medical Student Fellowship in clinical pharmacology at Thomas Jefferson University as well as a trauma research fellowship at Lehigh Valley Hospital Center, Allentown, PA. He completed his residency in general surgery at Pennsylvania State University, Hershey, PA. Dr. D’Amelio is board certified in both surgery and surgical critical care.

He completed his fellowship training in trauma and surgical critical care at the R. Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center, University of Maryland, in Baltimore.
