Type 1035/El-O-Matic Rack-and-Pinion Rotary Actuator

Type 1035/El-O-Matic double-acting andspring-return rotary valve actuators are compact,simply-designed control devices quality-engineeredto provide high torque outputs to 5700 Nm (50,000lbfin) and a high cycle life.

A compact, dual-opposed rack and pinion designand guide band suspension system combine toproduce a symmetrically balanced, center-mountactuator with a short powerful stroke and rapidresponse. A fully concentric operating load capabilityprovides optimum performance (see figure 1).

Features

Three Point Suspension SystemThreecarbon-filled PTFE guide bands provide a low frictionbearing surface for piston alignment and racksupport. Elimination of metal-to-metal contactbetween pistons and cylinder wall reduces friction foroutstanding cycle life, smooth piston travel, andmaximum power.

Balanced Piston DesignAs part of thedesign, three equally spaced bearing surfaces arecast into each piston. The rack and pinionconstruction results in even distribution of bearingloads, optimum gear engagement, and reducedpiston tilt. Equal spring force applied to each pistonenhances actuator life.

Multiple ConstructionsConversion fromdouble acting to spring return, or vice versa, issimple and safe, thus reducing spare partrequirements. Valve/actuator action is also fieldreversible.

Dual Stop Adjustment This adjustment isstandard on all E Series actuators. The P Seriesactuators are supplied with a limit plate adjustmentfeature.

Dual Piston DesignAir pressure applies abalanced force across the common pinion gear (seefigure 2). Symmetrically balanced center mountconstruction eliminates undue stress on the valvestem, bearings, and disc.

Installation

Output ShaftE Series actuators feature a doubleD or square recessed actuator insert in the end ofthe output shaft (see figure 2). The double Dconnection allows direct coupling to Type A41 valvedrive shafts, or it allows use of a coupling betweenthe valve and actuator. The P Series actuators havea recessed square connection machined into theend of the output shaft. The recessed squareconnection meets ISO 5211 standards. It allows theuse of a coupler between the actuator (square) andvalve (double D) connection. Refer to figures 5, 6and 7 and tables 4 and 5 for actuator dimensions.

Operation

Type 1035 rack-and-pinion actuators aremanufactured with an integral air manifold and withinternal porting. The air manifold is designed toNAMUR standards for direct mounting of a device. This eliminates the need for external tubing andsimplifies installation. For applications not requiringan air manifold, the inlet ports are marked A and B.

Figure 4. E Series Spring Return Actuator (Standard Const.)

Air-to-Air (Double Acting)

Air to Port A

Pressure is applied to the central chamber drivingthe dual pistons outward. Linear piston force istransferred via gear racks producingcounterclockwise rotation of the gear (see figure 3).

Air to Port BPressure is applied to the outside chambers throughthe internal port driving the pistons inward toproduce rotary (clockwise) motion.

Spring Return (Single Acting)

Air to Port A

Pressure is applied to the center chamber driving thepistons outward. This compresses the springs in theoutside chambers and produces rotary(counterclockwise) motion (see figure 4).

Loss of Pressure

Upon loss of pressure the stored energy from thecompressed springs drives the pistons inwardproducing rotary motion depending on the actuatorset-up. This fail safe position is held by springcompression until air pressure is re-applied to port A.

E25 toE350 assume a 0.09 Cv (0.08 Kv); E600 and E9500 a 0.26 Cv (0.22 Kv); E1600, P2500(5) and P4000(5) a 0.51 Cv (0.44 Kv).2. Dual Stop Adjustment (E Series only)

The Inner Travel Stop (stop 1 in figure 6) actsagainst the stroke adjustment cam and limits the

motion of the pistons as they move towards thecenter of the actuator. The Outer Travel Stop (stop 2in figure 6) acts against the pistons and stops theirmotion as they move out towards the end caps. TheInner Travel Stop is not available when the outwardmotion of the pistons causes the cam to rotateclockwise.

Limit Stop Plate (P Series only)

The Limit Stop Plate (LSP) allows the customer tolimit the actuator motion regardless of the rotationdirection of the actuator cam. One stop will limit theopen position, and the other will limit the closedposition. The particular stop (right or left), whichlimits a specific travel direction, depends on the camrotation direction and whether the device isclockwise-to-close or counter-clockwise-to-close.The bolts attaching the LSP to the actuator must beproperly torqued. See the instruction manual.
