When performing as part of a team it is essential that everyone knows what their responsibilities are and how your role relates to roles of team mates.

The success of tactics depend on how well the team performs as a unit where each player is performing their role to the best of their ability.

ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Every activity has a variety of roles and responsibilities in addition to being a performer. These roles may include:

A player An opponent An official A supporter (gymnastics) A coach/manager

ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES

A PLAYER When performing it is essential you know what your own individual responsibilities are within your role and how it relates to the roles of your team mates. For example, if you are a forward in basketball and you do not go back and defend for rebounds, how will a mistake such as this affect your team?

ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES

AN OPPONENTAN OPPONENT In practice an opponent can either be

passive or active. For example, a passive defender in hockey would let the attacker practice their dodge without trying to win the ball. An active defender would complete the practice without any conditions and therefore be allowed to tackle the defender (more realistic to the game).

ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES

AN OFFICIALAN OFFICIAL An official’s role is to make sure the game is carried out

safely and that players abide by the rules. For example, if a player elbows his/her opponent in

basketball the referee should blow the whistle to stop the game and award the elbowed player with a free pass from the sideline or a free throw if the foul took place in the act of shooting.

ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES

A SUPPORTERA SUPPORTER A supporter’s role is to help the performer

practice skills in order to help them improve their technique. For example in

gymnastics a supporter may help the performer perform a handstand by holding their hips above their head to allow them to work on their balance and body position.

ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES

A COACH/MANAGER

A coach or manager make tactical decisions for the team. They also decide on the training schedule that the performers should work on in order to improve their performance.

Coaches and managers also give encouragement and support throughout a performance. This role is similar to that of a captain.
