The R.E.A.L. Program and Canadian Tire Jumpstart Working together to provide recreation and leisure opportunities to children and youth in financial need.

R.E.A.L. stands for Recreation Experiences And Leisure.

The R.E.A.L. Program and Canadian Tire Jumpstart are partnering to provide recreation program opportunities for children and youth up to the age of 18, who due to financial circumstances are unable to participate fully in registered activities.

Local Canadian Tire store owners and staff are excited for Canadian Tire Jumpstart to join forces with the R.E.A.L. Program to help children in St. John’s grow, learn and play.On November 21, at the R.E.A.L. (Recreation Experiences and Leisure) Program’s annual luncheon, the City of St. John’s announced a new partnership with the Canadian Tire Jumpstart Program. The three local Canadian Tire stores along with their staff have played a significant role in forming this partnership to better serve and bring recreation programs to local children and youth in need. The R.E.A.L. Program has been helping children and youth of financially challenged families to participate in registered recreation activities since 2002, placing 15,000 children and youth in programs throughout the City. The Canadian Tire Jumpstart Program has a similar mandate to the R.E.A.L. Program and was established in 2005. Canadian Tire Jumpstart’s national network of over 315 chapters has helped almost half a million children across Canada have the chance to participate. As a national charity, Canadian Tire Jumpstart takes prides on the fact that all funds raised by

local chapters, such as St. John’s, stays in the local community to help children and youth. The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador was the first provincial government to partner with Canadian Tire Jumpstart, committing a total investment of $2.5 million for a seven year period starting in 2005. Over the past year Canadian Tire Store owners and staff have increased Canadian Tire Jumpstarts commitment in the province and the capital city by not only assisting individuals to participate in recreation programs but by also supporting programs to acquire new and better equipment for programming. Organizations such as the City of St. John’s Department of Recreation, the Duke of Edinburgh Awards Program and the Rock Rugby Club have availed of over $15,000 in new funding and equipment for their programs.

Canadian Tire local store owners and staff look forward to Canadian Tire Jumpstart and the R.E.A.L. Program working together for many years to help children, youth and organizations grow in St. John’s through recreation and sports activities.

Canadian Tire Jumpstart joins forces with the R.E.A.L. Program

From left, Natalie Godden Manager with the Family & Leisure Services Division along with Sherry Hounsell, Inclusive Services Coordinator with the Department of Recreation sit down with Charles Woodford, Canadian Tire Jumpstart Charities Atlantic Manager to discuss the new Canadian Tire Jumpstart and R.E.A.L. 1. Recreation organizations can donate spaces in their programs or provide a discount to the R.E.A.L. Program. For example, providing a space in a gymnastics class or providing a spot in a music lesson.

2. The business community and individuals can support the R.E.A.L. Program through financial and in-kind donations. Income tax receipts can be issued upon request for financial donations.

3. Donation of new or used recreation equipment and/or organization of equipment drives.

Kids are naturally drawn to the water as a cool place to play, splash, laugh and squeal with delight.Ever since toddlers were introduced to bath time, they associate water with fun, filled with bubbles and rubber ducks. We as adults, all know that water commands respect and children need the proper swimming skills to be confident and safe in order to enjoy the water later in life.To start on the road to gaining these skills for life, children ages four months to 36 months old and their parents or caregivers can enroll in the Red Cross Swim Kids Preschool Program. The Red Cross Swim Program is offered by the Department of Recreation at City pools year-round. The goals of the Swim Kids Preschool Program are:

Create a nurturing, positive environment that promotes learning.

Reinforce the importance of play as a learning tool for children.

Have fun, play, learn introductory swimming skills, and learn how to stay safe in, on, and around the water.

Encourage the use of songs, games, and a variety of stimulating equipment and toys to enhance learning.

Leslie White, Program and Operations Coordinator with the Department of Recreation explains “swimming is a fundamental life skill and the parents need to understand that the earlier they start, the more comfortable the child will be and the less fearful the parents will be.” Leslie also says that there is another side to swim lessons that benefits parents. “They get a chance to get out and socialize with other parents, have fun as a family and learn something new like how to hold their child properly in the water.” Toddlers learn the basics, to put their face in the water, how to float and glide. The lessons also give the child

the opportunity to get used to a group dynamic preparing them for unparented preschool lessons later on.

Lydia Stansbury, a veteran lifeguard with the City of St. John’s has been lifeguarding for almost a decade. Lydia says of City of St. John’s lifeguards and swim instructors “We offer a great deal of experience, we train and practice skills constantly and have to re-certify our credentials every two years.” She believes that these standards make her and her colleagues the best Aquatics team in the province. “Our friendly, positive attitude and good advice to parents and swimmers of all ages is something we all strive to deliver.”

Does Lydia have any advice for new parents questioning the value of Tot Parent Swim programs? “The earlier the better when getting involved. It’s easier to teach, lead and manipulate a baby at five months rather than a five-year-old with a will of his or her own. Our goal is to coach the parent to teach the child to be familiar with the water. Don’t be afraid to dunk your child under the water, that’s why we’re here, to coach you and help you through it. For the most part, babies don’t have a lot of fear, they’ll be OK.”

Parent and Tot swims are scheduled during the Department of Recreations’ Winter, Spring and Fall sessions. Please see pages 24 and 25 for details.

It’s never too early to learn to swim

Neighbourhood Watch is an easy, safe and free program where you are alert to anything that looks out of the ordinary. Having Neighbourhood Watch does not imply that you live in a high crime area; it shows that you live in a community that cares.

You can call (709) 726-0180 or email [email protected] to start or join an active Neighbourhood Watch in your community. Neighbourhood Watch, in cooperation with the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary, will come to your neighbourhood and host an information session to make sure you and your neighbours have all the details and information to get started.

DROP-IN FITNESS CLASS DESCRIPTIONS

SHALLOW WATER FITNESSThis low impact fitness class takes place in the shallow end of the pool. High Energy music combined with resistance exercises provide the participants with a cardiovascular workout as well as development of muscular strength and endurance.

DEEP WATER FITNESSThis no impact fitness class incorpo-rates a high energy workout in the deep end of the pool. Floatation belts and hand floats are used to provide a well rounded cardiovascular workout. All levels of swimmers are welcome as the flotation belts help to keep participants afloat.

BODY BAR FITNESSBody bar fitness uses weighted bars, hand weights, stability balls and tubing to improve muscular strength and endurance. This class incorporates several styles of strength training to ensure a well-rounded workout.

BODY CIRCUITThe emphasis of this class is on improving the cardiovascular and strength systems using a variety of movements and equipment. This class is suited to all levels from beginner to advanced as participants are encour-aged to go at their own pace to suit their ability and needs. How much you SWEAT is up to you! Try one class and you will be hooked.

zUMBAThe Zumba® program fuses hypnotic Latin rhythms and easy-to-follow moves to create a one-of-a-kind fit-ness program that will blow you away. Our goal is simple: We want you to want to work out, to love working out, and to get hooked.

zUMBA GOLDThis class is designed for active older adults and those starting their fitness journey. Zumba® Gold combines easy to follow moves with Latin and an international rhythm to create a fun fitness class that is less intense than regular Zumba®.

AQUA zUMBAAqua Zumba® keeps the Zumba Fitness workout party

going in the pool. Aqua Zumba® is low-impact and appeals to anyone who likes Zumba® but doesn’t want to get as hot as in the land-based classes. Aqua Zumba® is classic aqua aerobics with Latin flavor added. Eighty to ninety percent of your body weight is displaced in the water when the water is at your chest level. Thus your knees, hips and back undergo less pounding when doing Aqua Zumba®. At the same time, your body works four times harder than on land. Come get wet and have a blast.

KETTLEBELLThis class is broken down to perform ballistic exercises that combine cardiovascular, strength and flexibility training. By their nature, kettlebell exercises build strength and endur-ance, particularly in the lower back,

legs, and shoulders, and increase grip strength. This class is suited to all levels from beginner to advanced as participants are encouraged to go at their own pace to suit their ability and needs. Come try this class out, it is the ultimate conditioning tool.

AQUA JOG Aqua Jogging is exactly what it sounds like…it’s jogging…in the water…but there is actually more to it than that. If you’ve suffered certain kinds of knee or leg injuries that keep you from running on land while you recover, aqua jogging can actually be an excellent alternative to help you stay fit.

GENTLE GYM / GENTLE WATERGentle Gym is designed to improve

the strength of all muscles, bones and joints. This fitness class is also ideal for improving the strength of the heart and lungs. Gentle Water takes part in the shallow end of our swimming pool. The beauty of a fitness class in water is that there is much less impact on bones and joints. Come out and meet new friends, get fit and have fun.

STROLLERCISE No more “just pushing the stroller” Strollercise is a great activity that will allow parents to be active while bonding with their child and socialize with other parents about the challenges of caring for a newborn. The workout consists of cardio (walking or jogging), lunges, squats, push-ups, tricep dips, core and more. Strollercise is energetic and motivating, this atmosphere is perfect for new parents and babies, just what you need.

Southlands (Teakwood Park) For more information on any of these skate parks please call 576-8411 or email: [email protected]

The City of St. John’s strongly recommends that all users wear protective equipment. The number of skating injuries can be lowered by following skateboarding safety tips.

Get a certified helmet that fits snugly, and is done up tightly under the chin. Wear elbow and knee pads to prevent scrapes and cuts. Wear wrist guards to prevent wrist fractures. Wear slip resistant shoes with a closed toe. Make sure the skateboard is in good working order (no loose, broken or cracked parts, non-slip surface on board, no sharp edges).

Do not skateboard faster than your experience allows or faster than conditions permit. Complicated tricks require practice in a specially designed area.

Only skateboard when in good physical condition. Do stretching and conditioning exercises before and after skateboarding.

While skateboarding, if you lose your balance, crouch down on the skateboard to reduce the height of the fall, and try to land on the fleshy parts of the body. Try to relax your body during a fall, and try to roll instead of absorbing the force with your arms.

Do not get towed by bicycles or motor vehicles.
