National Carers Week National carers week is about recognising and celebrating the outstanding contribution

Australia’s 2.7 million unpaid carers make to our nation.

Anyone at any time can become a carer and National Carers Week is an opportunity to raise

community awareness among all Australians about the diversity of carers and their caring roles.

Carers make an enormous contribution to our communities as well as our national economy.

Should all carers decide to stop performing their caring role, it would cost the country $60.3

billion per year to replace those supports – that’s over $1 billion per week.

National Carers Week provides you with a chance to show your appreciation and

learn about carers and caring in Australia.

National Carers Week 2019 will be celebrated throughout Australia from 13 – 19

October.

Pink Ribbon Day Breast cancer is the most common cancer affecting Australian women. In 2019, it is estimated

that 19,371 women and 164 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer.

This means that approximately 19,535 Australians will be diagnosed with breast cancer in

2019, an average of 53 people every day.

It is important to remember that most people survive breast cancer. The latest statistics show

that the five-year relative survival rate for women diagnosed with breast cancer in 2011-2015

was 90.8 per cent. Of course, many people live long and healthy lives well beyond this period.

A snapshot of breast cancer in Australia:

The number of people being diagnosed with breast cancer in Australia is increasing;

however the number of deaths from breast cancer is decreasing.

The risk of developing breast cancer increases with age.

The risk of being diagnosed with breast cancer by age 85 is 1 in 7 for women and 1 in

675 for men.

The average age of first diagnosis of breast cancer for women is 61 years.

79% of new cases of breast cancer in women develop over the age of 50.

The chance of surviving at least five years (five year relative survival) has increased

from 74.0% in 1986-1990 to 90.8% in 2011-2015

Cancer Council's Pink Ribbon campaign aims to raise awareness about breast and

gynaecological cancers, as well as raise funds for prevention programs, support services and

vital cancer research. Pink Ribbon Day is held on the 24th of October each year but people

are encouraged to organise an event and fundraise any time during October.

Popular fundraising ideas include a pink morning tea, wear pink to work, pink luncheon or

barbeque, or a ball, but you can fundraise any way you like!

Do you need a script? It is the policy at Active Health Portland that you see a GP when

you require a script.

It is the duty of care of a GP to ensure their patients are keeping in good health.

When you come in to get a script the GP can ensure that you are having no

adverse side effects and that the medication is helping you in the way it should.

Please ensure you check on your medication and scripts regularly so that you can

make a time to organise a script well ahead of time. This will help to make sure

you can see your regular GP for the script that is required as another doctor may

not be able to write it for you.

Have any of your details changed? It is important we have your correct details so that we can confirm we are dealing

with the right person and are able to contact you in regards to your care.

If you have received a new Medicare, Health Care or Pension card or have

moved house or changed your phone number please let reception know

DON’T FORGET TO COME TO RECEPTION WHEN YOU

ARRIVE AND BEFORE YOU LEAVE

It is important that we know you have arrived so we can make the doctor or clinician you are visiting aware.

Please report to reception before taking a seat.

Day for Daniel Daniel Morcombe was a 13 year old boy, living with his parents and brothers in the town of Palmwoods on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland.

While on his way to buy Christmas presents for his family at a local shopping centre, he went missing.

He was last seen wearing a red t-shirt, waiting for a bus at 10 minutes past 2pm on Sunday 7th December 2003. He was abducted and murdered; after years of searching and an incredible undercover police investigation Daniel was finally found in 2011.

Daniel’s parents, Bruce and Denise, started the Daniel Morcombe Foundation to give back to the community who had supported them from the day that Daniel went missing.

Today, the Daniel Morcombe Foundation is one of the most well known not for profit child safety organisations in Australia. Daniel’s story changed child safety in Australia and the determination and dedication of his parents has inspired the entire nation.

The red t-shirt Daniel was wearing the day he went missing has

become a symbol of child safety awareness. Every year,

thousands of people dress up in red for an annual National Day

of Action for Child Safety, held on the last Friday in October:

Day for Daniel.

Life! Program The Life! Program is a free program run by health professionals that supports participants to live

a healthier and more active life. It is focused on the prevention of three conditions that all share

similar modifiable risk factors – diabetes, heart disease, and stroke.

Portland District Health has been involved with the Life! Program since it started and the first

Portland Life! group was run in early 2008.

Eligibility into the Life! Program is varied, but usually it’s based on an AUSDRISK score (12 or

more) or certain previous medical conditions (such as impaired glucose tolerance).

The program covers:

Diabetes, heart disease and stroke

Healthy eating, energy balance and weight control

Physical activity

Stress management and improving sleep patterns.

If you think you might be at risk or want to start taking steps towards a healthier lifestyle make

an appointment to talk to your GP.

Every Brilliant Thing

World Mental Health Day – 10 October – is a day for global mental health education, awareness

and advocacy. It is an initiative of the World Federation for Mental Health to raise public

awareness of mental health issues worldwide.

Mental Health Australia is leading the World Mental Health Day campaign in Australia. As the

peak not-for-profit organisation representing the mental health sector in Australia, Mental Health

Australia has a focus on ensuring the whole community recognises the part we all play in

creating a mentally healthy society.

Do You See What I See? challenges perceptions about mental illness in Australia and

encourages everyone to look at mental health in a more positive light in an effort to reduce

stigma and make way for more people to seek the help and support they deserve.

Stigma around mental illness due to misunderstanding or prejudice remains an issue in Australia,

delaying or preventing people from wanting or feeling able to seek help, and impacting adversely

on their lives.

Misconceptions and misrepresentations about those experiencing mental illness are damaging to

people’s lives. They may include references to people affected as being ‘scary’, ‘comical’,

‘incompetent’, ‘weak’ or ‘hopeless’ and can appear anywhere, from in the media and the arts to

conversations we have at work, school or home.

It’s time to look at mental illness in a different light – a positive

light.
