Action of Catalysts
Aim: To investigate whether manganese oxide and other substances act as
catalysts for the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide.
Hypothesis: All catalysts will work quickly toward the decomposition of the
hydrogen peroxide.
Materials:

Method:
1. Added mL of $ydrogen %eroxide along with drops of detergent to a test
tube.
. $alf-lled a beaker with hot water. %ut the test tube in the hot water andobserved.
(. %ut mL of $ydrogen %eroxide in a second test tube and added a small
amount of manganese dioxide powder.2. Lit one end of the piece of string3 then blew it out so that it had a glowing
tip into the test tube.!. 4bserved what was left around the mouth of the test tube.+. 5epeated the experiment using other substances instead of manganese
dioxide.

%iscussion:
1. The hydrogen peroxide was heated in step because it was needed to
observe the reaction inn hot water vs. room temperature.. 7es the manganese oxide did act as a catalyst because it reacted fast
compared to other catalysts.(. A foam was formed when the hydrogen peroxide decomposed.2. $4'aq* ? $4'aq* $4'aq* ? $4'aq*!. , predict that it will remain the same way because it did not react without
a catalyst.+. The best catalyst for the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide was liver.
Conclusion:
The aim was achieved as the investigation showed that the liver and manganese
dioxide worked best as catalysts for the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide. ,t
was hypothesised that all the catalysts would work quickly but the hypothesis
was proven wrong as only two catalysts worked fast. The results showed that all
the catalysts showed no presence of oxygen and that hot water boosts the rate
of reaction. 8rrors with this investigation included the fact that the dropper was
di@cult to -nd the exact measurement of mL. :ext time this could be -xed with
a dierent measurement tool.
