HELPING PEOPLE ACHIEVE EDUCATION AND WORKPLACE SUCCESS
New Year, New GoalsSeptember brings with it the start of a new school year and a new fiscal year for ACT. As we plan for this nextyear, several goals have been identified for the work of ACT State Organizations. Included in these are:
Increase the policy and advocacy footprint of ACT State OrganizationsIncrease ACT State Organizations membershipCreate impactful, effective learning opportunitiesCreate an increased awareness of the purpose of ACT State Organizations
As our councils meet over the course of this next year, district managers will share strategies that will helpachieve and advance these goals. We also encourage you as members to support these goals in your workand among your peers and colleagues. Throughout the year we will feature articles on each of these goals andhow we and our state organizations are working toward them. Pledge now to join us in advancing the greatwork of ACT State Organizations.
ACT State Organizations Steering Committee UpdateDuring the month of October, each state council member will be invited to nominate an engaged,outstanding council member or themselves for a position on the ACT State Organizations Steering Committee.Representatives serving on the Steering Committee will represent their entire district from one of threeperspectives: secondary, postsecondary, or workforce. Elections will take place in November, with theinaugural meeting to be held in Iowa City in January. We are looking forward to the work ahead for the SteeringCommittee and the outstanding members who will fill those positions to advance the mission of ACT and ACTState Organizations.
The Condition of College & Career Readiness 2014SubreportsOver the past few months, ACT has released multiple subreports on The Condition of College & CareerReadiness 2014 (/newsroom/data/2014/) for students in the graduating class of 2014. Each report is designedto help inform the following questions:
Are these students prepared for college and career?Are enough of these students taking core courses?Are core courses rigorous enough?Are younger students of these populations on target for college and career?What other dimensions of college and career readiness should we track?

Professional Development OpportunitiesThis month, the ACT College and Career Readiness Workshops kick off around the nation. Thesesessions, offered in free workshops near you, will help you discover how ACT data and insights help informstudent preparation. We encourage you to invite administrators and educators in your area to participate. Walkthrough real score reports from various ACT products with an ACT expert and leave with ideas, actions, andresources to use in your school.

ACT College and Career Readiness Campaign (CCRC): We are already well under way for the 2015–2016ACT CCRC. There are several improvements to this year's campaign, including online applications! Pleasemake sure to take a look at the due dates for applications at act.org/readinesscampaign/applications.html(/readinesscampaign/applications.html) and forward the links to potential candidates. September applicationdeadlines in the Southeast include: Alabama, Florida, and Virginia. A special shoutout to ACT's ShannonHayes for working so hard to continue improving and growing the campaign!
Georgia: Welcome to the newest member of the Georgia Council, Angela Hupert! Angela serves as the youthservices chair on the Georgia PTA and previously served as federal legislative chair.
Kentucky: The Kentucky Council met this month at the University of Kentucky to finalize plans for theupcoming STEM webinar on November 18. ACT Director of STEM Client Partnerships Steve Triplett will sharethe brandnew statespecific data for 2015. A panel of Kentucky educators will then discuss the data and theimportance of STEMrelated education and workforce opportunities in the state. The panel includes: Dr. JulyeM. Adams, Biomedical Sciences Village, Elkhorn Crossing School; Dr. Thomas Tretter, Professor, ScienceEducation, University of Louisville; and Dr. Dianne Leveridge, Director of Technical Programs, KCTCS. Be onthe lookout for registration information from the Kentucky Department of Education.
Mississippi: Be sure to register (http://www.cvent.com/events/mississippiactstateorganizationconference/eventsummary520c888d6e1f4779aa69ada8241eaab1.aspx) for the November 17 conference,Launching Students to College and Career Readiness. North Carolina: We're looking forward to a productive planning meeting with the North Carolina Council at theNorth Carolina PTA headquarters in Raleigh on October 2. Thank you to Council member Sarah Martin foroffering us space!
South Carolina: Congratulations to Don Burkard, associate vice president of enrollment management, who isretiring from the College of Charleston. Thank you for your many years of service and leadership on theCouncil!

A handful of Northwest district state councils began meeting for the 2015–2016 year after a summer hiatus;see below for details on those that did.
Alaska: The Alaska Council has an exciting opportunity in conjunction with their fall meeting in Juneau. Theywill be participating in the University of Alaska Southeast (UAS)/Alaska’s Learning Network (AKLN) 2015 FallConference: Teaching and Counseling the Online Learner & ACT Connection. The Council will be part of apanel during the conference—look forward to an update later this fall!
Colorado: The Colorado Council is getting excited for their upcoming September 18 conference, College andCareer Elevated: More Than One Way Up the Mountain. In addition to an engaging keynote speaker, Dr. KyleReyes, and a student panel, this conference should be one for the books! Kansas: Kansas commenced their 2015–2016 conference calls in August. Among the agenda itemsdiscussed: the 2016 spring conference, the ACT College and Career Readiness Campaign(/readinesscampaign/), and collaboration with the Kansas Board of Regents and Kansas State Department ofEducation at our upcoming fall inperson meeting in October!
Nevada: The Nevada Council kicked off the year with their inaugural monthly conference call. Due to therecent release of the ACT junior testing data for the state, Nevada Department of Education AssessmentDirector Richard Vineyard reported out to the Council—much appreciation to Richard. Additionally, the Councildiscussed the upcoming year and made some decisions regarding membership.
Oregon: Oregon tied up the Northwest district spring inperson meetings with its June gathering. With much tolook forward to in 2015–2016, the Council discussed process and strategy for engaging Oregon in the ACTCollege and Career Readiness Campaign (/readinesscampaign/about.html). The Council also discussed ACTPolicy Platforms (/policyplatforms/) and how they can help inform the Council’s work and support Oregonstudents.

What would you like to see your state ACT council tackle this year? As the Midwest councils kick off their2015–2016 term, we seek suggestions from state organization members across the 10 states in the Midwest.Ideas can include opportunities for learning events, conference session topics, or hot topics in education andworkforce that the council should discuss. Please contact your district manager, Rose Babington(mailto:[email protected]), to share your input for your state.
The Midwest will begin its series of council leadership conference calls in September, bringing together thechairs and chairselect of each of the 10 councils to share common issues and ideas. Council leaders willcongregate in Iowa City in October and will then have quarterly touchbase calls and webinars during the yearto allow state councils to share their best practices and identify opportunities to collaborate. We thank all ofthe council members who have stepped up to serve as leaders and look forward to a great year ofstrengthening and engaging our councils.
Councils across the Midwest welcome many newly elected members across the 10 states, whose termsofficially begin in September. We are excited to have a wide array of new members bringing their expertise toour organizations, and we appreciate the continued service of our terrific council members who continue tovolunteer their time and leadership.
Councils in Nebraska and South Dakota have September meetings scheduled to start the year. Nebraska'sCouncil, chaired by Jerry Smith, will meet in Lincoln to plan for their 2016 event. Chair Tom Cool will lead theSouth Dakota Council meeting in Mitchell.
The Northeast district is excited to kick off the fall with a number of new council chairs. Congratulations to allthose selected by your peers to take on leadership positions within ACT State Organizations. We look forwardto working with each of you as fall council meetings are scheduled and new state organization initiatives getunder way.
With many members enjoying vacation and family time, August was a relatively quiet month for mostcouncils. However, we have a few items of note to share.
New Jersey: The New Jersey Council held their fall Council meeting in late August. The Council discussedplanning for the upcoming year, participation in the ACT College and Career Readiness Campaign, andemerging education issues in the state. Thank you again to all of our New Jersey Council members, andwelcome aboard to our newest members!

Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont: A widespreadmembership drive is planned for the New England region this fall, in collaboration with ACT College and CareerReadiness Workshops throughout the region. As we continue to build the presence of ACT State Organizations in thisregion, we rely on all of our current members to continue to spread the word among your colleagues!
New York: The New York Council is in the midst of outreach to potential new Council members throughout thestate. As this process continues and a fall meeting date is discussed, we are excited for the potential of theNew York Council and the collection of education and workforce leaders in the state that will be assisting inthe work of the New York ACT State Council.

California: The Council met in August at the University of California, San Diego, to welcome seven newCouncil members from across the state. The Council also continued planning their 2016 California ACT StateOrganization Conference, The California Promise: Achieving Social Justice through College and CareerReadiness. The event will be held next February at California State University, Fullerton, and is open to thepublic but targeted to counselors and college access providers. Registration opens this month! The Council isexcited to join the ACT College and Career Readiness Campaign (/readinesscampaign/awardees2015national.html) (ACT CCRC) for the second year in a row. Click here (/readinesscampaign/awardees2015.html)to read about last year's ACT CCRC exemplars. The deadline this year is November 6—more information tocome in the next newsletter. Stay tuned!
Arizona: The Arizona Council had their summer planning meeting this month in Phoenix. Thank you toCouncil member Deb Duvall, from the Arizona School Administrators, for hosting the Council. The Councilcontinues to advocate for intentional engagement with college and career readinessfocused initiatives that areinformative and engaging to Arizona workforce and education professionals. With this in mind, the Council ismoving into its second year of the ACT College and Career Readiness Campaign(/readinesscampaign/awardees2015national.html). Click here (/readinesscampaign/awardees2015.html) toread about last year's ACT CCRC exemplars. If your school meets the criteria or you know of a deservingstudent and/or school, please encourage them to apply. The deadline is October 20, and the application(http://act.org/readinesscampaign/applications.html) is submitted completely online!
New Mexico: The Council welcomes seven new members from the K–12, higher education, and workforcecommunities from across the state. The group met this month in Albuquerque to propose and discuss their2015–2016 initiatives. College and career readiness, with a specific focus on work readiness, has been apassion of the New Mexico Council and the leadership hopes to bring awareness of the critical situation ofworkforce to the New Mexico community. Job skills gaps, graduation rates, enrollment rates, dualenrollment,and cross sector partnerships are just a few of the issues that the council hopes to raise in the coming year.
Texas: The Council kicked off their 2015–2016 term this month by meeting in Houston at Lone Star College.Thank you to Chair Dr. Bennie Lambert for hosting. The group participated in the ACT College and CareerReadiness Campaign (/readinesscampaign/awardees2015national.html) for the first time. As the Texas ACTCCRC deadline was in midAugust, the Council reviewed submitted applications and voted on a final exemplarfor various categories. Exemplars will be notified by email in the coming weeks. Congratulations on youraccomplishments and we thank you for promoting college and career readiness for all!
Oklahoma: The Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education have kicked off their annual StudentPreparation Fall Workshops, held from September 16 to the first week of October throughout the state. Theseworkshops are for administrators, counselors, district test coordinators, and curriculum leaders, and are
