The Concept The Concept
Not just a tournament
The Nevobo and sports marketing agency TIG Sports
have come up with a unique concept for the 2022
FIVB Volleyball Women’s World Championship. Thefirst round, which will be played in Arnhem, follows a
traditional format, though the playing location is a
remarkable one. Three stadiums will be set up in the
GelreDome, which is the size of a football stadium
and is suitable for mega concerts. These can often be
used simultaneously through functional programming
and room layout. In 9 days, as many as 60 games
can be played. Moreover, the sitting volleyball World
Championship can take place simultaneously. All
participating countries are hosted in neighbouring
municipalities in the province of Gelderland.

official moment is organized. During this important media
moment , it will also be announced which country will
stay in which Gelderland municipality. The World
Championship organization will ensure that the
participating countries can get acquainted with their
host city, the side event program and the available
facilities after the drawing.
For the fourth and final round, the tournament
returns to the GelreDome. A centre court has now
been laid out here. The four remaining teams play
the semi-finals first and then either the final or the
match to determine third place. The number of tickets
sold one week before the start of the semi-finals will
decide if the organization builds a stadium in half the
Gelredome or in the entire football stadium.
This format offers many possibilities, and it creates
a lot of attention locally (in Gelderland), nationally
(Rotterdam) and internationally. The media value
generated by this set-up will be large.In the second phase where the top four teams of
the first round pools will participate matches will be
played at four different venues. The Netherlands will
receive (if it qualifies for the second round) Rotterdam
as a competition venue. The other countries will play
– after consultation with the FIVB – in big European
cities (to be selected by FIVB). Since distances in
Europe are small logistically playing in more countries
should not be a problem.
Incidentally, this FIVB Volleyball Women’s WorldChampionship, according to the plan, will come to life
years before the start of the World Championship.
The organization of the 2022 FIVB Volleyball Women’s World Championship not only wants to create a
bigger experience in the different parts of the world
with a unique tournament design; it also expects the
Drawing of Lots, by FIVB president Dr. ir. Ary da Silva
Graça Filho, tournament director Bas van de Goor and
famous volleyball players, to be a major event in 2021.
In the third phase the remaining six teams will return
to the Netherlands, more specifically to Apeldoorn.

The choice to have both the first phase and the final
weekend of the 2022 FIVB Volleyball Women’s World Championship in Gelderland has already led to great
enthusiasm in the province. And because of the
unique design, it can also serve as an international
example for a new set-up of events. A feasibility study
into the economic and social effects in Gelderland
showed that there is a feeling of great involvement
in the event, not only in the host cities but also in the
other towns and municipalities in the province.
World Championship, it is conceivable that schools
will give thematic lessons on the World Championship
country that is housed in the municipality. Many
municipalities have already indicated that they also
want to organize their own sports, cultural, musical
and culinary side events in the city center. The
result will be that much more involvement in the
tournament is generated in the province, both among
the population and the local business community.
The hosting cities will also be involved in the
ticketing strategy of the FIVB World Championships.
Inhabitants of the cities will be invited through
many ways to visit the matches of the country they
host. To achieve this schools, companies and other
organizations will be part pf the project to fill the
stadium in as many matches as possible.

eArnhem A number of cities have already presented themselves
as hosts for a specific country. For example, Ede will
act as Host City for the women’s team from China. The official opening of the 2022 FIVB Volleyball Women’s World Championship will also take place in Ede. The
World Food Center is optimally equipped for this. The
team presentation, a unique concept for volleyball,
will take place in the city center of Apeldoorn. On the
Market a podium and catwalk will be built, where
the t eams will be presented to the public and the
media. Supported an dressed by students of the
Fashion Academy in Arnhem the teams will present
themselves to the world as the beautiful and
stylish athletes that they are.

n With the event, Gelderland not only wants to achieve
the greatest possible exposure and name recognition
beyond its (provincial) borders, but it also wants to
create an impact. The fact that many municipalities
in the province are involved – and can therefore benefit
from all the advantages that the organization of such
an event brings with it – provides a broad support base.
ZevenaarThis is of course also due to the unique design of
the tournament. The province and the Gelderland
cities have entered into an exceptional partnership.
All 24 participating countries will be hosted in 24
municipalities that are located around the GelreDome
in Arnhem – the competition venuefor the first and
final phase.

Many Gelderland volleyball clubs will also be
involved in the 2022 FIVB Volleyball Women’s World Championship. Gelderland has 185 volleyball clubs.
No less than 21,055 inhabitants of Gelderland are
member of the Nevobo; one in six Dutch volleyball
players comes from this province. Through the
JOIN campaign, the Nevobo will let the population
come into contact with the sport in all of the
Gelderland municipalities. This campaign includes
clinics at schools, a visit from internationals, a
volleyball playground, a company tournament, and
management development at clubs.
Thanks to this special link between host cities and
country teams, there is a bond between cities,
the local population and athletes. This will not
only be noticeable in and around the hotels of the
participating teams, but will be propagated by the
entire municipality. Municipalities will take care of
transporting the team to the play accommodation,
and nearby fitness centers and local sports halls will
be made available for practice.
