No transaction can take place without the back-office. It provides a vital service to the front office by ensuring that all funds flow in a timely and correct manner and all necessary documentation is completed. This examination has been designed to provide a benchmark for competency in all aspects of the operations process.
The ACI Operations Certificate supports treasury operations teams and related groups to efficiently cope with stronger competition in the financial markets and to smooth co-operation with supervisory bodies. Candidates will become up-to-date with the latest developments that affect the treasury operations. It also helps candidates to develop a front to end treasury view in terms of process promoting a better understanding between trading community and operations staff.
Based on the current conditions globally, and the continued need for certification, we have structured a program that will give learners the opportunity to engage in a live classroom environment through an interactive video link.
Learners will be provided with material which will be utilized both in the live classroom and for their personal study. The following will be provided in soft copy: The ACI Operations Certificate Tutorial letters A book of practice questions and 3 mock exams A PowerPoint slides presentation used in the live classes
The course is Suitable for: Recent entrants to the Operations Department (Back Office) Other trading room support areas; Internal and external auditors; Compliance and risk officers Product Control Vendors.
The program will consist of seven -3hour video sessions conducted through the GoToMeeting platform. Each of the sessions will be instructive where concepts are explained using a PowerPoint presentation.Concepts in each topic will be cemented using practical examples and exam type questions
After each session the learners’ will complete the assessment in the relevant tutorial letter before the next class. The sessions will be run as follows
André holds BCom Honours degree in Business Management fromUNISA and is a CAIB (SA) with the Institute of Bankers in SA.
Andre is a Fellow of the South African Institute of Financial Markets and has served as a Governor on the board for over 17 years. He has extensive knowledge of banking, treasury and finance products.
André worked in the treasury at Nedcor for 9 years, where he traded money and bond markets. While at Nedcor, he was instrumental in establishing the interest rate derivative trading desk. André worked at two major interdealer brokers as a Director responsible for Interest rate derivative broking.
André worked at ABSA as Head of their agricultural derivatives trading desk in 1994. During his time at ABSA, André sat on the executive committee of the SA futures Exchange Agricultural Markets Division.
André worked for the SA Futures Exchange for a year as Assistant General Manager responsible for interest rate product development.
The ACI Financial Markets Association recognizes André as a training provider for both the ACI Dealing and Operations Certificate programs.
Andre has been training for 16 years and is extensively traveled having facilitated workshops and training interventions for many of the large multinational financial institutions from introductory to advanced level in Singapore, Hong Kong, Dubai, Oman, KSA, Malaysia, China, Sri Lanka, India, Pakistan, Uganda, Malawi, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Namibia, Kenya, Nigeria, Ghana, and South Africa. He consults to a number of companies on treasury product implementation and hedging.
Andre has conducted over 100 ACI Workshops internationally with an outstanding first time pass rate for both the ACI Dealing and Operations certificate.
André authored a book titled “Introduction to Derivatives - A South African Perspective”.

Introduction to the program. The use of the GoToMeeting platform and the protocol for the learners during the live classroom will be discussed. The Treasury overview and the process of taking a transaction from deal input to confirmation will be examined. The role of SWIFT and the relevant SWIFT codes and message types will be explained.
The settlement and clearing systems for foreign exchange and money market dealing will be examined. The importance of payment systems as well as the different types of netting will be explained.
Post trade internal reconciliation calculation and position keeping will described. Calculation of a dealer’s open position and the unrealized profit and loss will be done. The importance and process of post settlement reconciliation and investigation on Nostro accounts will be explained. The structure of a treasury system and its functionality as well as the basic concept of treasury accounting will be explained.
The concepts and practices in risk management will be examined. Market, credit, and operational risk will be considered from an operations perspective. The documentation used in the over the counter (OTC) markets will be investigated and their importance explained. The importance of the role played by Compliance Officer and the Money Laundering Officer will be explained.
Foreign exchange market will be investigated and both spot and forward conventions as well as the settlement calculations will be examined. Money market will be investigated and both discount and yield instruments as well as calculations will be examined. The nature of the interest rate environment and yield curves will be explained.
The derivative market for currency and interest rates will be examined. OTC as well as exchange-traded environment will be explained. Forward rate agreements-FRAs, short-term interest rate futures, interest rate swaps-IRSs will be covered. Basic call and put options as well as caps and floors will be discussed.
The market for short-term notes and bonds will be examined and the characteristics of bonds explained. The nature of issue and dealing process in the secondary market will be covered.
