from different disciplines. It wasgood to get out of the businessworld and mindset, and socialisewith people from different courses.

What do you think of thecampus and the facilities? It’s really good. You have everythingyou need in one place, shops, bars, societies and of course, the library.I love the library, I think half of mythree years have been spent there!

Have you used the Career andEmployability Service?Yes I have because I’m making aMaster’s application. They’ve beenreally helpful. I had no idea how towrite my CV and they really helpedme. I came out with a really goodCV and I applied to really gooduniversities, so fingers crossed.

What kind of career are youhoping to have?I’m going to get a Master’s degreeand I want to qualify either as atax accountant, or as a financialaccountant using charteredaccountancy. I’m still decidingbetween the two qualifications, either CPA or ACCA. I getexemptions from my degree, which means I don’t have to doall of the papers for a professionalqualification, which is a really goodthing as well.

Any advice for future students?Make the most of your time herebecause three years goes by soquickly. You are here to get a degreebut also have some fun.

Fathima Riyaldeen is inthe final year of her BAAccounting & Financedegree.

Why did you choose Kent?I looked at both city and campus-based universities and prefered thecampus-based ones. I love Kent, thecampus, the facilities and it’s a bit ofpeace and quiet away from London.

How is your course going? What have you really enjoyed?Stressful but amazing! The modulesfeel integrated, they flow from thesecond year into the third year soyou build your knowledge andexperience. The range of optionalmodules is really good and themodule that I have most enjoyeddoing is, surprisingly, taxation. It’sreally different from what we havebeen doing, a bit different fromstraight financial accounting, and I think I may look into acareer in taxation.

What do you think of thesupport available from yourlecturers? They are really approachable, quite wonderful. They are veryhelpful, they always answer yourquestions and if they can’t do itduring their office hours, they willgive you an appointment to seethem afterwards. They are verypassionate about their subjectsand have a lot of experience, both academic and practical.

You became a Student Rep.What made you do that?It was to get more involved withthe University. I thought, ‘I’m herefor three years so let’s get themaximum benefit of coming touni and be part of the community.’Being a student rep meant I got toknow a lot of different people, bothstudents and academics, and couldhelp to improve our course and thestudent experience.

You also do some volunteering?I am an academic peer mentor, soI support students who are on mycourse in years one and two. Itgives me a chance to help themwith things that I have already beenthrough. I am also part of the‘buddy scheme’, where I help andsupport new international students[I am originally from Sri Lanka]so they can settle in and make themost of their time here. I belong tothe Islamic Society, making food forthe homeless and I volunteer atOxfam when I’m at home. I havetaken the Kent Student Certificatefor Volunteering – I collected 102hours for that, so have beenawarded the gold certificate.

How would you describe yourfellow students? We have a good mixture ofinternational and UK students, which makes for an interestingdynamic. I see people from mycourse and hang out with them buta lot of my friends are from outsidemy course. Joining societies is agood way to interact with people

my final year was to receive an offerfrom an organisation that would fundmy studies for my charteredqualification. Not only did I do this, but I was able to earn myself a jobat a prestigious ‘Big 4’ firm.

I opted to take an industrialplacement up as part of my degreeprogramme, and was lucky enoughto earn a place at EY. Especiallywithin the Big 4, passing theexaminations as part of yourchartered qualification is crucialfor your success at the organisation.Kent aligns their course so closelywith the exams for your charteredstudies that you go in with a bigadvantage.

Could you describe your careerpath since leaving Kent?Having completed a year alreadyat EY, I returned as a second-yearwithin the Financial Services TaxDepartment, specialising in Wealthand Asset Management Clients.Since my return, I have made aconscious effort to try and getexposure across service lines, where I have been involved intransaction work, corporate taxcompliance, real estate tax, privateequity, operational taxes andauditing.

What are your plans for thefuture?I plan to stay at EY until I qualify asa chartered accountant (June 2020),and then potentially study for theCTA (Chartered Tax Adviser)qualification. It depends onhow I feel by 2020!

What attracted you to Kent andto this particular programme?I liked Business and Maths at A levelso it seemed like an appropriate fit.My sister studied Accounting &Finance at Kent too, and she wasalready working in an investmentbank by the time I was applying. She has always said how much sheloved the campus and I visited a fewtimes. It felt like one community, asopposed to separate buildings withother things in between.

How were your studies? I really enjoyed my studies; a goodthing about the programme is thatyou study a variety of subjects. There are obviously compulsorymodules, but by the time you get toyour final year you get to choose allof the modules you study. By thatpoint, you are aware of what youenjoy more and where you performbetter. That being said, it’s good thatthe first- and second-year modulesare compulsory as it gives you agreat base to build upon.

What did you think of theteaching at Kent? The teaching at Kent is great; whatreally helps is that the lecturersare mostly qualified accountants.Especially when quite difficult topicsare being discussed, it is so helpfulto have someone who can actuallyexplain something in a business

context and give you a real lifeexample. You realise how importantthis is if you complete a year inindustry, when you actually haveto put your learning to practice!Additionally, the lecturers are morethan happy to put time aside tohelp; this is something you shouldn’ttake for granted and you shouldtake up their offer.

How would you describe yourfellow students? Your fellow students will alwaysbe your first point of call with anyproblem you are having. Kent putsan emphasis on group work, whichis really useful and helps youprepare for team-based workingwhen you are in practice. TheUniversity hosts a collaborativeenvironment.

The students at Kent seem reallydriven; they are there because theywant to be rather than because theyhave to be. I think that’s somethingthat really shows, and it’s importantto be surrounded by people whohave aspirations and goals.

In what way has your degreehelped you find work? With the placement teamsassistance, through their lecturesand workshops, I was able toobtain a graduate job at my dreamworkplace! My only aspiration in
