ENGLISH IMMERSIONThe Accelerated English Language Program (AELP)

is a summer immersion in English language and American culture. Students are asked to commit to their experience by speaking only in English in order to truly embrace this unforgettable adventure. This commitment

helps to quickly strengthen language volubility and, in turn, create friendships.

ALL-INCLUSIVE PROGRAM

The AELP is an all-inclusive program open to students 12-18 years old with any level of English fluency

“The Accelerated English Language Program provides students with a unique opportunity to improve not only their language proficiency but also their life skills and confidence as young adults.

The AELP’s greatest strength is the way in which carefully tailored instruction within the classroom is supported by authentic learning opportunities on and off campus.

Our students leave the AELP feeling confident in their ability navigate new experiences, explore world cultures, connect to relevant issues, and initiate conversations—and they can do all of this while speaking English”

MEG PECHENICK 2014 AELP DIRECTOR

ENGLISH LANGUAGE

INSTRUCTION

The AELP curriculum is carefully structured to support students of all proficiency levels as they improve their English reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills. Experienced instructors and small class sizes help students make the most of every learning opportunity. Instructors concentrate on building the literacy skills crucial for language acquisition, notable for students planning to matriculate into a school where English is the language of instruction.

INSTRUCTORS & STAFF

AELP instructors are degreed professionals, experienced in teaching English to speakers of other languages. Passionate educators, our teachers and staff are empathetic to the students' experience while challenging them in and out of the classroom. Students are supported through every aspect of the Accelerated English Language Program.

CLASSES

Mornings are divided among three sessions:

MEASURABLESUCCESS

Students’ language proficiency is assessed on arrival using a TOEFL-style placement

test consisting of four parts: reading comprehension, grammar multiple choice, short answer, and essay. Upon departure,

students are assessed again using an equivalent test. In 2014, 91% of students

maintained or improved their scores.

• ESL: Students focus on specific, level-appropriate aspects of English grammar and learn to reduce errors in their speech and writing.

• CONTENT: Students expand their language skills by examining a variety of topics through authentic sources such as books, magazines, blogs, and newspapers. Students in content class read short stories or articles and write essays, biographies, or reviews.

• PROJECT: During project time, students work in pairs or small mixed-level groups to create dynamic projects such as a presentations, music videos or skits related to the theme of the week. Completed projects are presented to the entire group at the end of each week.

STUDENTLIFE

Students have opportunities for growth in all aspects of their lives. Creative and engaging programs provide stimulating and comprehensive American culture immersion as well as character and social development.

RESIDENTIAL HOUSES

New Hampton School residential house rooms sleep 1 to 3 students. Students are matched with roommates of a different nationality whenever possible. Program staff members live amidst the students, serving as house parents. They are present for supervision and support and to maintain a safe, comfortable, family-style environment.

MEALS

An abundance of healthy and varied cuisine is offered in the Memorial Hall Dining Room. Mealtime is casual and offers another opportunity to interact with American students attending one of the many programs offered on the NHS campus throughout the summer.
