Reading procedure Teaching point: explain the suggested reading procedure to the student

1. Look at the questions first to see what topics

you need to look for – be aware you may need to look for synonyms(同义

词)

2. Concentrate on the stem of the question

when you are looking for the right part of the text

3. Skim the text to identify the correct

paragraphs to read: the questions will go in order so question 5 will come

between 4 and 6

4. Read the correct part of the paragraph carefully

and then re-read the question – looking at each option in turn

5. Ask yourself if you are looking for fact or opinion

6. Delete the answers you know to be incorrect

7. Underline the words in the text that give you the

answer

A second problem is the fact that many renewable power generation sources are located in remote areas, such as windy uplands and

coastal regions, where there is currently a lack of electrical infrastructure. New infrastructures therefore must be built. Thankfully, with

improved smart technology, this can be done more efficiently by reducing the reinforcement or construction costs.

Key words for energy

The suffix(后缀) -able often combines with verbs to form adjectives describing something that can

have a particular thing done to them:• unpredictable → 不能预测的

• renewable → 可再生的

The suffix -ative often means relating to or tending to do something: • alternative → 可替换的

• creative → 有创造力的

The suffix -ious is often used with adjectives to mean having the qualities of something:• notorious → 恶名昭彰的

• precious → 宝贵的

Complex sentence (复杂句)

Definition: A complex sentence is made up of an independent clause with one or more dependent clauses joined to it with an appropriate conjunction or pronoun.

When the cake is brown, take it out the oven.

when the cake is brown (dependent)

+ Take it out the oven. (independent)

In the complex sentence above, “when the cake is brown” is a dependent sentence because it is preceded by the word “when”, which is a subordinating conjunction(从属连词). Dependent clauses must be attached to independent clauses in order to form a complete sentence.

Example: When a distinguished but elderly scientist states that something is possible, he is almost certainly right.

When he states that something is impossible, he is very probably wrong. (These are two complex sentence)
