Third Grade News [email protected] Hello Families,

We just want to thank you in advance for everything you have already

done for World’s Fair and everything you will do next week. The

costumes look great and we are rolling along. Anyone looking to

come in and help set up is welcome at any time. Our goal is to

have the room completely ready by Wednesday at 3:00. We are

still looking for a few families to help with food. Since no one

stepped up to do jerky or meat how about a few crock pots of

stew. Please have any and all food at school and ready to go by

2:00 on Thursday. A more detailed schedule of next week was sent

home with your kiddo.

First-Grade Facts . . . [email protected]

Thank you to all who have brought in projects and/or signed up to volunteer or send in items for world fair! Also, thank you for turning in those permission slips for our last week of school! This class continues to amaze me with their desire to learn and impress! They have written “moon matter of facts” and only want to write more and more. They wrote sun facts on sun flares and begged to do more. I read informative and narrative bear texts in order for them to write one of their choice as an end-of-the-year assessment, and they were literally shaking on the carpet with excitement to get down to it. What a fun bunch of learners! Next week is world-fair week! I’ll send home daily reminders if you signed up to help set up. The class will be performing their little “Neighbors in Space” puppet play next Wednesday at noon. It will only be for about a half hour. World Fair is next Thursday, 2:30-4:00! See you then …. Mrs. Mayer

Second grade with Mrs. Holler [email protected] Hello Families, This week in art was fantastic! The K, 1, and 2 students were building, painting, and exploring pattern and sculpture. They are very excited about sharing their projects with you at the World’s Fair. Holler for Reading! We are almost finished with our sayings and phrases. It has been a wonderful adventure to discuss the meanings of them with the students. Thank you to the many parents that volunteered this week with at home projects and in class! Holler for Math! We finished our time unit and we have been learning about shapes and fractions this week! Please continue to practice telling time on an analog clock with your student. Our last chapter is on measurement and we will start it after World’s Fair.

Next week is our World’s Fair. Each student

needs a “lab coat” to be a researcher. This can be a

fancy costume one or as simple as a button up white

shirt. Please have your child’s lab coat to school by

Tuesday.

We will need parent help daily if you are

available—especially on Wednesday from noon on.

Our class has had wonderful help so far and I thank

you for all your participation and help!!

This week our theme was ducks. We had a

lot of fun with the stories. Our math was about solid

shapes of cone, cube, sphere, cylinder and pyramid.

The students worked hard at cutting paper to create

the shapes. The shapes went home on Wednesday

for students to practice these challenging names.

Our class is out of 5 ounce paper cups. Just a

couple of packages would last us till the end of the

year. Please donate if you can.

Have a wonderful weekend!

As always, call, email or stop by anytime.

Benbow’s 4th Grade Buzz Exit Interviews have been scheduled.

Please check your child’s backpack for the

notification and email ASAP if the time

needs to be adjusted.

[email protected] or

[email protected].

Please check with us throughout the week

to determine when and how you can help

with World Fair. We will definitely need

help on Thursday evening to clean the room

and return it to

In Language Arts, we read our How-To

papers and the stories that were written

to explain a chosen Core Knowledge saying!

These, as well as the legends written

earlier, will be sent home at Exit

Interviews.

We worked with some pre-algebra and took

our final Math assessment before diving in

to World Fair preparation.

The Manley Minute [email protected]

This week we finished our MAP testing as well as some final progress monitoring probes. The students have worked so hard to close out the year! I am proud of their progress! Language Arts: This week we have been busy finishing our Teachers' Pet Peeve packets. Students looked at different homophones and learned strategies that can be applied when writing. We also learned where to place the apostrophe in possessive nouns. The students took a pre-test and post-test for this unit and showed great improvement! Math: In class we pulled out the manipulatives and learned all about equivalent fractions. Vocabulary for this unit included numerator, denominator, fraction, equivalent fraction, and multiple. We ended our week taking Benchmark tests to show their progress for the year. The results will be shared at Exit Interviews.

The Real/Olson Report In 5th Grade this week we had an amazing time mostly preparing for our

Worlds Fair! We had two members an Alaskan Bonsai group here to show off

a couple of their trees and talk to us about the art of Bonsai. It was very

educational for the kids to realize that bonsai can be created from any tree and

doesn’t have to be a Japanese tree at all. They also learned some of the rules of

the art form that is Bonsai. We will be displaying some live Bonsai during

Worlds Fair along with our own artificial Bonsai that we made out of brown

paper bags that turned out very unique. We were also visited by the Japanese

Consulate this week and given a presentation on Japanese Art and Culture. We

ended this presentation with hands on lesson of origami, the art of Japanese

paper folding. The class made cranes, frogs, and samurai hats! We also

finished our MAP testing this week so we have a final record of growth and

learning to compare with our beginning of the year MAP assessment.

Worlds Fair is next week so free to stop by and lend a hand in our construction

and preparation for our awesome cultivating event. Thanks again to all of the

parents of 5th grade that have been helping their students send in costumes,

food, and materials. We are very well set up and supported for next week.

Vamos en Espanol [email protected]

Pinatas, pinatas, pinatas!!! That has been the theme this week! We discussed the historical and cultural significance of the pinata in all the grades. Students brought in Hispanic foods. We played games, danced to Latino music, ate Mexican foods and took turns trying break open the pinata to be rewards with goodies. So, we close out a great year of learning some conversation and culture. Students have developed some confidence to approach new cultures and new people with an open curiosity. Enjoy your weekend with your family! We'll see you at World Fair. Mr. Reilly

Middle School Spanish

Sixth, Seventh and Eighth grade Spanish classes finished up the year with fiestas. Eighth graders discussed future plans for their language careers and contemplated the possibility of foreign exchange or service learning trips to practice their Spanish in a meaningful way to connect with others. The rotary program in our Valley is particularly robust and offers many scholarship opportunities for students who like to try a foreign exchange experience.

Señorita's Sixth Grade Readers

We finished The Outsiders and wrote our own epilogues. We ended our class on Friday listening to Ponyboy recite Robert Frost's poem, Nothing Gold Can Stay. After World's Fair we will be segueing into more poetry recitation and Reader's Theater style activities.

Spanish News for 6th,7th, and 6th and 8th

We wrapped up the writing lab this

week. 2nd graders finished 1st

Rabbit and discovering how

authors uses their senses to make

their writing stronger.

Lab-

Third, Fourth and Fifth Graders took their last Spanish test of the year. The verb vocabulary was a bit difficult for some but those students who studied and prepared for this test were rewarded for their efforts. Students learned a favorite dance of the Dominican Republic - merengue - with the always enthusiastic Sharon Peek. Third grade students were treated to a delicious flan and chocolate cake made by Logan in 6th grade.

Wright 7th LA: Our final week of instruction began and ended with our dystopian novels. Literature circles met and presented the beginning, middle and end of their books to the class. We also worked on our book trailers, with many students choosing to film certain scenes. I'm excited to watch them Friday and give them their final grades!

Wright 7th math: Wrapping up Chapter 12 was our focus, as we learned various formulas for volume and surface area. Students used their skills to manipulate those formulas to find the missing values and were tested Friday. Please encourage your child to practice math this summer - ALL of them can use it!

Wright 7th math: World War II ended with the Manhattan Project, battles of the South Pacific and the bomb. Students were tested Wednesday and turned in their book projects based on the Diary of Anne Frank on Thursday.

It's been a busy, fun year with your children and I hope they've learned a lot! Mrs. Wright

7th grade with Mr. Reilly [email protected] Around the World in 180 Days We closed out our history class with the unconditional surrender of Japan to the Allies, after the A-bomb was dropped on Nagasaki. This ended WWII and also ended our studies of history for the school year. I've had a great class of students with very curious and creative minds! I particularly enjoyed their professionalism in reporting the news from the Middle East during their "current events" which opened many classes this year. Enjoy your weekend with your family & we'll look for your help with World Fair during the school days next week.

Write On! We continue to write, recite, read, and study poetry this week. Students in my class are having a competition this week in free verse with their choice of topic with guidelines of 16-24 lines of poetry. Some students gave voice to trees while others described the life of a crocodile. Additionally, students have been summarizing their book, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, by Robert Louis Stevenson. The framework with which they summarized the book was using the five elements of fictions: setting, characters, plot...

The poetry unit was well received and I never heard one complaint, except for one student framing it inside of a poem. This group of students has been enjoyable for me to work with throughout the year! Enjoy your weekend with your family! Mr. Reilly

Ramirez Review What an exciting time of year! I hope everyone is getting ready for our Seldovia trip. Make sure to get out your boots and raincoats and check to make sure things fit, these kids are growing quickly! Please plan with your child what warm jackets and coats they plan on bringing with us to Seldovia. Also, a good set of long underwear and other synthetic fabric layers will help them stay warm in the damp weather. Prince William Sound can be chilly if it is rainy or windy, so please send them prepared. We cannot return to the school to warm up during the day, because school is in session, so your child must be prepared to stay out regardless of the weather. As we finish up our academic year, I would like to say thank you for letting us teach your children. I appreciate their enthusiasm for learning. My first year teaching here at Academy will be well remembered. Thank you parents for your patience with me as I learn the ropes. -Mrs. Ramirez [email protected]
