Last World-Fair Meeting next Thursday at 1:00!

A few kids have already presented their reports .... The class LOVES learning new facts about animals and their cool adaptations to their habitats!

It's been a week of showing off with those end-of-the-year assessments and then exploring two-dimensional shapes and equal parts.

Please turn in permission slips for Seward Sea Life Center as well as H2Oasis!

Contact me anytime ... Mrs. Mayer

Kindergarten Notes Thank you Ms. Charity for the help with stick

horses. Thanks to all the families that have already turned in their item for our community service birthday boxes—you Rock! All items are due by Tuesday, March 18th.

This week we read stories about Easter and rain. We also learned some fun new songs. We continue to write in our spelling books 4 days a week. The handwriting and spelling I see are outstanding!

We revisited skip counting and fractions this week. Then we added these concepts to our math books. When given extra time with their books, our class enjoys counting on the 100’s chart or practicing equations.

Have a fabulous weekend Contact me anytime. Ronni Berg [email protected]

Second Grade News [email protected]

This was our last week for spelling. The kids were excited. :O) Now I will start testing the kids on their Oral Phonogram Review and Written Phonogram Review. Their Spalding books will be going home with the kids at conference time in May.

In math, we have been working on money and graphs. Please practice-counting coins whenever there is a chance. Coins are not used very often. Next week will be the last week for math homework.

We have been putting papers into their portfolios, so not many papers are going home.

We are putting together a packet for parents to sign up to help with World Fair, sign up for our food list, and information about what we need your child to wear for the fair. We do have brown vests each child as a group.

Have a great weekend. Mrs. Booth

Holler for Reading!

We've been investigating sentence structure. The students are doing a wonderful job of writing in complete sentences and forming paragraphs. We also finished our last cursive page.

Holler for Math!

The students have been practicing counting coins this week. We have also been studying time and graphing. A way that you can help at home is to practice counting money and asking your student to tell you the time. I am proud of their hard work in math!

Third Grade News [email protected] Thank you to all the families that showed up for our World’s Fair meeting on April. We came up with some wonderful ideas; however, we are still in need of many items. Please keep an eye out for a signup sheet. This week we wrapped up our final spelling test. We will finish off the year with Core Knowledge stories, Map Testing, World’s Fair and end of the year assessments. During math, we worked on liquid volume. We had several measuring devices on hand to experiment with milliliters and liters, as well as grams and kilograms. Next week we will work on measuring elapsed time. Mrs. Weetman

Fourth Grade Buzz Thank you to the few families who

helped supply our cutlery and paper goods for snack and lunch. We still need

glue sticks. Next week we will be MAP testing, so there will not be a great deal of homework from Language Arts or Math. Language Arts enjoyed a week of normal routine! We had Spalding lessons and took a spelling test and had reading packets. We also continued to practice finding key information in short passages to improve summarizing skills. Math class plowed through geometry this week, learning about everything from points and lines to angles and quadrilaterals. As always, if you have any comments or concerns, please feel free to email us! [email protected]

Kile’s Kiddo’s [email protected]

Wow this week went fast. You children are very excited to see the sun. In Spelling we completed our last spelling test for the year. You children were Michelangelo this week. Ask him/her what that means. We all took a test on following directions. The entire class failed the test. (It is the one that tells you to read the entire test first and then answer the questions. The last question tells you to just put your name on the paper and turn it in.) This was not only an educational moment but also a fun time. The next day all students read the directions first.

In math we completed Chapter 10 and had a test on Friday. Ask your student what they did today. We had a blast of an Easter egg hunt.

Parents a signup sheet is being sent home for you to participate in World’s Fair. Please help if you can. This is a great time to earn hours. Also we desperately need old t-shirts to make the dog toys for the Animal Shelter field trip on May 10th. We are also looking for parents to volunteer to help make dog treats.

The Manley Minute [email protected]

Language Arts: This was our final week to enter 30 words into our Spalding notebooks. We will continue to practice our oral phonograms and rules that we have worked hard on all year. The students also took a 50 word test and presented their Character Book Reports.

Math: We are continuing our work on equivalent fractions and reducing fractions into simplest form. Vocabulary terms include numerator, denominator, equivalent, least common multiple, and greatest common factor. We have added fractions with like denominators and solved word problems with fractions as well.

As our year is coming to an end, I would just like to say how much I have enjoyed working with this group of amazing fourth graders!

Young Writer’s Conference will be held Saturday, April 29th at Sherrod Elementary. Registration deadline in April 21st. If you are interested in this wonderful event and need more information please let Mrs. Weetman or your child’s home room teacher know.

Hello Families,

This week in art the K, 1, and 2 students focused on their World's Fair topics of study. The Kindergarteners investigated texture and created caterpillars. The second graders finished their bug sculptures. A huge thank you to the parents who came in and helped build and papier mache. The first graders used oil pastels to draw big mouth fish to celebrate their study of ocean. They also painted habitat shirts that they will wear during World's Fair.

Spanish News

Third, Fourth and Fifth graders are practicing new conversation, discussing how much Spanish they speak, and playing Simon Dice to learn their body parts vocabulary. These intermediate grades had study guides sent home this week for their Last Spanish Test Of The Year next week. Please encourage them to study.

The Kindergarten class completed their family and home assessments this week. The first graders finished their American symbols book. The second graders learned about Robert Fulton and his steam engine that was used on many rivers during the Westward Movement in US history.

News from 6th, 7th and 8th

Bienvenidos a la clase de español escuela media

Español with Señorita Catarina

Sixth Graders were in Juneau this week. Seventh graders are learning to express amazement in Spanish and starting to be able to make off the cuff comments to each other in Spanish. Eighth graders are taking their open book assessments and really trying to use their textbook as an ally, not their enemy.

Vamos con Senor Reilly (6th, 7th, 8th grade

We are trying finding our way around in a new place. We're are asking directions to get where we want to go and also to be able to understand the directions that other people give us to find our way. We worked together as a class for correct pronunciation and fluency. Afterwards, students worked with partners to feel more comfortable with this new vocabulary bank. Also, we have been watching some video about the diverse culture of Argentina.

Have a great weekend with your family! Mr. Reilly

Remiez Report

MATH: We are working on probabilities this week. You may have noticed that I am trying a different format for the assignments in this chapter. Each student has a packet with all their assignments for the chapter. We are working our way through the chapter as a class, but each assignment must be corrected to at least 80%. They cannot move on to the new assignment until they have corrected the previous ones. This has made a big difference, and has cut down on missing assignments and lost papers. Students are eager to work ahead, but there are requirements they must meet before they can begin the homework each day. So far, students seem more interested in learning and moving forward to new skills each day. I would appreciate any feedback from your end as well. SCIENCE: Please help your students prepare for the Seldovia trip. Review the packing list and make sure they have the required items and that they FIT. Please make sure they bring a reusable water bottle. Please turn in money for students and parent chaperones as soon as possible. We are focusing on learning names and characteristics of intertidal animals. We have learned about 6 major phyla of the intertidal zone and the characteristics of each group. On Monday at 9 am, we will be dissecting sea stars in class. If a parent or two would be able to attend and help out with that, it would be great. Mrs. Ramirez ([email protected])

Reilly’s Weekly Review

Around the World in 180 Days Our focus this week has been learning about all the leaders, on both sides during WWII and also discussing all the causes of the war. Additionally, we've been watching some video clips and discussing Hitler's invasion of western Europe, including the German occupation of France.

Next week we'll study the the Battle for Britain and Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor.

P.S. Parents if you are going to Seldovia with us, please bring in $50 cash, for food for four days ASAP!

Write On! (7th grade L.A. with Mr. Reilly)Poetry has still been on our radar this week with students writing blank verse and also reading and writing their own fun limericks. Students were given carte blanche and could write about anything they wanted to. The only parameters were to have three stanzas with eight lines per stanza. I recommended that they what they know or like. It's easier to write about what is familiar to you.

Enjoy your weekend with your family! Mr. Reilly

7th grade Mrs. Wright [email protected]

Parents who are coming to Seldovia need to get their $50 in for food ASAP. Please give to Donna in the office or one of the 7th grade teachers.

Wright 7th grade LA: Jane Eyre was the focus of this week. Students responded in writing to chapters, and discussed how Charlotte Bronte explored the impact of Victorian conventions for female behavior using foils and doppelgängers. We also worked hard on our author biography presentations, which were presented to the class beginning Thursday.

Wright 7th grade math: Chapter 11 came to an end mid-week, with a test on angles, triangles, polygons and angle relationships. Students are determined to be one of the only classes to finish all 12 lessons in Chapter 12, so we dove right in at the end of the week.

Wright 7th grade history: Students studied the differences and similarities of the totalitarian governments rising in Europe in the 1930s, as well as the German progression in the early days of World War 2. Next week, we'll have a special speaker, an 83 year-old who, from the ages of 6-11, was forced into Hitler's Youth. His perspective on indoctrination will kick off our introduction to the Holocaust. Students should be steadily reading The Diary of Anne Frank throughout this month. Moodle responses are due Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays. A book project was assigned early this week as an assessment that is due at the end of April.
