The professional staff consists of religious and lay persons who, in close cooperation with parents and local community leaders, actively share the task of educating young men from a variety of ethnic, socio-economic and religious backgrounds. Originally founded in 1870 to serve the sons of predominately German immigrant families in the Buffalo area, Canisius High School continues today to respond to the many cultural and demographic changes of Western New York by drawing its students from the wider Niagara Frontier. The school is affiliated with 59 other Jesuit high schools and 28 Jesuit colleges and universities in the United States. It is understood that, while steeped in Catholic tradition, Canisius welcomes and respects a diversity of religious traditions. As a Jesuit community, it strives to educate the whole person; it creates an atmosphere that engages the total person and extends beyond the classroom by helping to form agents of change whose attitudes and values will enrich contemporary cultures. It is committed to the goals of academic excellence and continually moves toward independent learning. It cultivates a style of thinking that is reflective, analytical, critical and circumspect. There is an emphasis on personal accountability and habits of self- discipline. The fundamental purpose of Canisius High School is to form “men for others.” Upon graduation, students reflect openness to growth, intellectual competence, a religious tradition relative to the conscience and background of the individual; demonstrate a fundamental orientation toward God and a fundamental understanding commensurate with their level of development; and recognize the need to make a commitment to doing justice. Canisius High School is chartered and registered by the Board of Regents of The State of New York as a college preparatory school. An important difference between Canisius and other area schools is that everyone at Canisius graduates with the same diploma: a Canisius High School diploma. All of our graduates complete more course work for the Canisius diploma than what is required for a NYS Regents diploma. The Board of Regents recognizes this, and as such does not require our students to take NYS Regents exams. The school is accredited by the NYS Department of Education and the Middle States Association of Colleges and High Schools. Memberships are also held in the Jesuit School Network (JSN), the National Catholic Education Association (NCEA), and the New York State Association of Independent Schools (NYSAIS). OUR SCHOOL

Canisius High School is a private, Catholic, college preparatory school within the dynamic tradition of Jesuit education.

There is an emphasis on personal accountability and habits of self-discipline.

The school is accredited by the NYS Department of Education and the Middle States Association of Colleges

and High Schools. Memberships are also held in the Jesuit School Network (JSN), the National Catholic Education Association (NCEA), and the New York State Association of Independent Schools (NYSAIS). Administration and faculty hold memberships in various local, state and national professional organizations.

Canisius High School does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, national or ethnic origin in its admission and educational policies, or in its curricular or co-curricular programs.

ENROLLMENT 830 males grades 9 – 12 Student/teacher ratio of 11:1 Admission is based upon examination, recommendation and solid academic performance.

CANISIUS DOES NOT RANK OUR STUDENTS We believe that ranking students is not an accurate method of distinguishing one student from another. Nor do we believe that the concept of rank reflects our rigorous college preparatory curriculum, the selective nature of our student body or individual student achievement. Therefore, ranking students would be a misleading indication of a student’s academic quality and ability to successfully manage college-level studies. Ranking is also inconsistent with our educational philosophy, which encourages individual improvement without forcing students to compete against each other or to compare themselves to one another.
