ACADEMIC MEDICINE SCHOLARS PROSPECTUS

MISSION: The NYIT College of Osteopathic Medicine Academic Scholars Program is designed to prepare outstanding osteopathic medical students who are interested in pursuing careers in Academic Medicine.

SCHEDULE The Scholarship is scheduled between January of the student’s third year and December of the fourth year. As part of the Academic Medicine Scholarship Program, the student will enroll in a Master’s Degree Program in Neuromusculoskeletal Sciences (MNMS) which consists of 33 credits of graduate coursework that shall be completed during the scholarship year. After the Scholarship year, students resume their rotations and graduate upon the completion of their 5th year. At graduation, students will receive their DO degree, their Master’s Degree in Neuromusculoskeletal Sciences, and a Certificate issued by the Academic Medicine Scholarship Program signifying the completion of all requirements. In order for Scholars to matriculate into the Scholarship Program they must be in good academic standing and they must pass their COMLEX Step I on their first attempt.

FINANCIAL SUPPORT Each Scholar is awarded a full scholarship for their last two years (3rd and 4th years) as an Osteopathic Medical Student at NYIT. Additionally, the College of Osteopathic Medicine will also pay for 21 of 33 master-level credits. Academic Medicine Scholars are responsible for the cost of the remaining 12 credits, which are offered at a discounted rate. Each Scholar is responsible for paying their own medical and dental insurance. Scholars are eligible for student loans for living expenses, medical and dental insurance, and tuition charges for the Master’s Degree Program. Scholars are not eligible to receive any additional institutionally funded grants and/or scholarships. If a Scholar decides to withdraw from the program all current and prior year scholarships are reversed from the students account. The student will be charged tuition and fees for each year the scholarship was received and will be held responsible for those charges.

OBJECTIVES

During their Scholarship year, Academic Medicine Scholars will:

• Develop research skills • Amplify verbal and written

communication skills • Learn effective teaching methods • Integrate information technology

in medical education, health care delivery, and research

• Learn the process of publishing research in peer reviewed journals

TRAVEL EXPENSES Upon the approval of the Director of the program, each Academic Medicine Scholar will be reimbursed for conference fees, lodging, travel, and food if the Scholar presents a research project at a scientific or professional society meeting.

CURRICULUM FOR THE MASTERS DEGREE IN NEUROMUSCULOSKELETAL SCIENCES (MNMS) There are 13 required courses in the Master’s Degree program in Neuromusculoskeletal Sciences. These include:

MMPU 826: Supervised Research I

MMPU 828: Supervised Research II

MMPU 832: Supervised Research III

Throughout the spring, summer and fall semesters, each Academic Medicine Scholar will work with a Faculty Research Mentor on an approved research project in clinical, biomedical, or any related field. Research projects are submitted by the faculty and peer reviewed to ensure the project is appropriate for the available resources, time, and general level of knowledge and expertise of the Scholars. The projects will be distributed to the incoming Scholars before or at the beginning of the Scholar year. Scholars are assigned one of these projects via a match process. The match process helps ensure the Scholars are assigned topics that are in general alignment with their interests and associated with their personalized learning objectives which they will develop as the project begins. Scholars are required to work on their research projects throughout the year and will be enrolled in research credits during all three semesters. Research activities will include literature review, project design, experimentation and/or data gathering, and data analysis. In the fall semester, the Scholar is required to produce at least one paper or poster presentation suitable for presentation at a professional society.

MMPU 710: Biostatistics & Epidemiology This course is intended to provide Scholars with a working knowledge of the basic concepts and methods of epidemiology and biostatistics. There is a focus on the acquisition, analysis, and interpretation of information about disease occurrence, disease treatment and health behaviors. In this course, Scholars will learn about the application of statistics to understanding the occurrence and control of public health conditions such as infectious diseases and chronic diseases. At the completion of this course, Scholars will be expected to be able to conduct basic statistical analysis for public health studies and interpret statistical results. Scholars will use SPSS statistical software for the analyses conducted in this course.

MMPU 735: Methods and Research in Medical Education This course consists of sessions and workshops that examine the processes, methodologies, and applications of medical education. Scholars will search, evaluate, and discuss medical education literature, learn about pedagogical models of medical education, and write learning objectives and assessment items. Scholars will be able to apply what they learn in this course to the active teaching components of the Scholars curriculum – lectures, OMM, DPR, and Anatomy teaching practicums. MMOM 820: OMM Lab Trainer I MMOM 822: OMM Lab Trainer II Academic Scholars are an integral link in teaching osteopathic principles and practice to pre-clinical students. Through deeper study of the materials, clinical exposure, lab preparatory sessions and practice assessment item writing they will develop their ability to teach in large and small group settings in which they will become more adept in conveying osteopathic philosophy and diagnosis and treatment methods. Scholars will also prepare scholarly work in the form of an osteopathic case write up for presentation as well as have other opportunities for academic enrichment in osteopathy.

MMNM 710: Advanced Concepts in Neuromusculoskeletal Sciences This course provides training for Scholars in basic science research activities pertinent to an academic physician. This course consists of a series of highly interactive activities designed to familiarize Scholars with the entire research process. Scholars participate in and individually lead critical discussions of peer reviewed journal articles on neuromusculoskeletal and related biomedical topics, write and evaluate NIH style grant proposals, peer-review scientific manuscripts, and give presentations on their own research projects for peer evaluation.

MMNM 826: Supervised Lecture Each Scholar is required to select, prepare, and deliver a one-hour academic lecture/classroom session before 1st and/or 2nd year medical students. Scholars select a lecture topic and faculty member who will mentor them on the lecture. Before delivering the lecture, the Scholars will participate in lecture review sessions where they will go over and critique each other’s lectures to aid in their development.

MMPU 820: Anatomy Laboratory Trainer

This course is designed to give Academic Medicine Scholars a well-rounded understanding of methods in human gross and neuroanatomy laboratory instruction, including assisted dissection, small-group instruction and facilitation, reciprocal peer-teaching, demonstration of prosections, and exam setup assistance.

MMNM 730: Advanced Concepts of Clinical Research The purpose of this course is to provide training for Scholars in activities pertinent to an academic physician, with a focus on clinical research. The course should prepare Scholars to critically review medical literature, lead journal clubs, prepare clinical topic and case presentations appropriate for activities at University teaching hospitals (tumor board, grand rounds, etc.), and to discuss issues pertinent to clinical research at an advanced level.

MMNM 832: Academic Medicine in Clinical Practice In addition to contributing to the education of physicians, and contribution of new knowledge through research, patient care is the third element of academic medicine. In this course, Academic Medicine Scholars will be presented with opportunities for continued clinical exposure during their Scholar year and achieve competency in presenting a case and facilitating group discussion as it pertains to basic anatomy, histology, physiology, pathology, osteopathic findings, laboratory and radiology findings, and societal implications of cases encountered in clinics. The Academic Medicine Scholars will facilitate discussion incorporating learning theory, processes, and pedagogical models of medical education, which are introduced in earlier modules.

MMNM 830: Doctor-Patient Lab Trainer During this course the academic Scholars will understand and demonstrate how to educate first year medical students during the Doctor-Patient Relationship Laboratory sessions. The skills taught in this course will serve as a bridge between didactic educational approaches and techniques. The course will develop the Scholar’s skills with particular emphasis on the facilitation and debriefing of first year osteopathic medical students. Additionally, medical education through simulation will be introduced.
