Academic misconduct includes:

Cheating – an attempt to use or provide unauthorized assistance on any academic exercise. This includes submitting substantial portions of the same academic work for credit more than once without the instructor’s permission.

Fabrication – falsifying or inventing information or data

Page 3: Academic Integrity at IU

Plagiarism – any ideas or materials taken from another source must be fully acknowledged. Note: It does not matter if the plagiarism occurs on a draft or the graded version of an assignment – both are considered plagiarism.

Interference – stealing, changing, destroying or impeding another student’s work

Page 4: Academic Integrity at IU

Violation of course rules – violation of rules established by a department, course syllabus, verbal or written instructions or relevant course materials

Facilitating academic misconduct – intentionally or knowingly helping or attempting to help another student commit academic misconduct

Page 5: Academic Integrity at IU

Lying or providing information known to be false (for example, providing false information/documentation regarding course absences) is also considered misconduct.

It is important to know that… All IU students are responsible for

upholding and maintaining academic and professional honesty and integrity

The Code does not take intent into account

Faculty members *must* report all instances of academic misconduct to the Dean of Students and have the right to impose an academic sanction for academic misconduct in their courses.
