that is proportional to the motor rpm, and the polarity is changed with the direction of rotation. This type is both suitable for regulation within a very wide range of armature speeds, and for 4-quadrant control. It also has the advantage of generating a very low ripple-voltage, which results in good regulation at low motor rpm.

dc Tacho-GeneratorMounting Kits➤ For TEFC dc Motors to 5.5kW as listed

on pages 4, 5 and 6➤ The kit to mount the Tachometer-

Generator consists of a fan cover, shaft extension, and tachometer adaptor bracket with miscellaneous hardware to connect these parts. Once the kit is in place all that is required to couple the Tachometer-Generator is a coupling between the motor shaft and Tachometer-Generator shaft. This coupling is supplied with the mounting kit. Use the adjacent cross reference of motor types to select the appropriate kit.

Multi-Purpose Module Type ‘M’➤ The Baldor Type ‘M’ multi-purpose

starter is a versatile, reduced voltage starter with adjustable ramp up and ramp down features for effective, controlled starting and stopping of any three phase motor driven equipment.

➤ Tachometer feedback may be utilised to provide consistent and smooth starting and stopping times, independent of load.

➤ Adjustable current limit allows for constant current starting of high inertia loads.

➤ Current ceiling features reduce peak power demand and associated penalty costs.

The Baldor H2 family of drives operate three phase induction

motors in several control modes as either an open or closed loop

control. Open loop speed control is available as Inverter Volts per Hertz

and Encoderless Vector. Closed loop Vector control is accomplished using a sophisticated fourth generation space vector control algorithm and motor feedback. Additional H2 drive models are available to control closed loop permanent magnet AC servomotors using motor feedback.

Inver ter Volts per Hertz is the t radi t ional method to contro l AC motors in adjustable speed applications. Easy setup and operation right out of the box make this control mode the most popular motor control method today. Used for a variety of applications that require adjustable speed operation and good speed regulation over a limited operating speed range including pumps, fans, and general machinery applications. Volts per Hertz is the control method of choice

for applications where mul t ip le motors are

operated simultaneously f rom one motor

control.

Encoderless Vector operation is available when tight speed and current control is desired in an open loop control environment. If you need near closed loop performance without the complexity of additional wiring and setup, consider Encoderless Vector control. Using similar control algorithm as closed loop vector drives, low speed operation near zero speed is possible with good motor current control. If you’re operating a process such as mixing that needs to detect when the desired viscosity is reached or metering pumps where tight speed control is required, then consider applying the Encoderless Vector control mode available in the H2 drives.

Closed Loop Vector operation is the ultimate control of AC induction motors. Using a motor mounted encoder, or similar feedback sensor, the control is able to precisely control motor torque and associated opera t ing speed. Us ing fas t microprocessors and current sensors, the H2 Vector Drive can segregate motor current into components that produce torque from the currents that produce motor heating. By minimizing the heating component of current and accurately controlling the torque component of applied current, the motor will behave very much like a DC Motor but without the maintenance. Full torque at zero speed, abil i ty to direct ly command motor torque, t ight speed regulation, and high-speed motor operation are all available. Easy setup is accomplished with

selectable rotational or stationary auto-tuning. Adaptive tuning will also automatically tweak the control loop adjustments while the motor is operating.

Simple to program and operate, the Baldor H2 keypad makes operating, programming and monitoring a snap. The keys on the keypad depress so you “feel” the key has been pushed. We also feature a 128 x 64 graphical display. Best of all, this easy to use keypad is harmonized to operate any H2 product in all power ranges.

Adjusting the control is as simple as it gets because of block programming. With the H2, you’ll never have to scroll through every parameter to get to the one you need. With block programming, the adjustments are grouped in blocks of like adjustments. The H2 keypad enclosure is rated IP65 when mounted on a panel and is designed for remote mounting up to 65 metres away.

Baldor H2 drives offer a wide variety of plug-in expansion boards to allow controls to be interfaced with various inputs and outputs. One, two or three expansion boards may be mounted into the control to custom tailor the inputs, outputs, and feedback requirements to the application. Baldor also offers several expansion boards that allow direct interfacing with popular PLC’s. Depending on the choice, these may consist of an expansion board, software, or a combination of both. All H2 drives include a Modbus RTU Communications port as standard.

utilise up to two expansion boards mounted directly in the controller.When using one expansion board, either a Group 1 or 2 board will connect by a connector on the side of the board. Vector & Inverter Drive Motors

Advantages of ac motors in variable speed applications include…➤ Lower initial cost compared to dc motors.➤ Less maintenance because there are no brushes to

replace, or commutator to resurface.➤ Totally enclosed, high efficiency ac motors run

cooler and stay cleaner inside, providing longer life expectancy than dc motors.

➤ ac motors are more versatile. They can be installed in environments where dc motors are not suitable, and indoors or outdoors without special housings to prevent water entry.

➤ ac motors are in IEC dimensions, enabling easy mechanical interchange, usually off-the-shelf.

➤ Where access to the motor is limited or non-existent, or where routine maintenance required for dc motors is not feasible, ac motors are an ideal solution.

➤ Low rotor inertia delivers quicker acceleration and deceleration than dc motors.

➤ For adjustable speed applications requiring either variable or constant torque from low to base speed, an inverter drive is often the best solution.

What is a Line Regenerative Drive?

Whenever a motor is slowed more rapidly than if it were coasting to a stop, it becomes a generator.

The energy or power generated by the motor may be dissipated as heat through a dynamic braking resistor, or alternatively with the correct technology, it can be returned into the incoming power line.

Baldor controls which deliver the regenerated power to a dynamic braking resistor include the Series ‘15H’ Inverter and the Series ‘18H’ Vector Controls.

Now Baldor has introduced two new series of controls which return the power generated during motor braking back into the incoming line.

The Series ‘21H’ Line Regenerative Inverter Control and the Series ‘22H’ Line Regenerative Vector Control.

Which control is best for your application?

In applications where the motor can be allowed to coast to a stop, Series ‘15H’ Inverter and ‘18H’ Vector Controls with no braking options are generally used. When limited braking is required, external dynamic braking options may be added to these standard controls.

There are many applications however where a Series ‘21H’ Line Regenerative Inverter or Series ‘22H’ Line Regenerative Vector Control would be the better choice.

These include: ➤ Applications where reduced energy consumption or

reduction of demand charge penalties is important.➤ Applications which have a large percentage of the

total cycle time devoted to braking the motor/load.

➤ Applications having an overhauling load➤ Applications which must comply with IEEE–519

which specifies a limit on harmonic voltage and current waveform distortion, including those where the motor can coast to a stop.

➤ Typical applications include Winding/Unwinding Stands, Downhill Conveyors, High Volume Air Conditioning, Test Stands, Press/Cyclic Loads, Hoists and Cranes.

What is IEEE–519?IEEE Standard 519-1992 is titled ‘IEEE

Recommended Practices and Requirements for Harmonic Control in Electric Power Systems’. This is a recommendation on limits of harmonic current drawn from and fed into utility power lines by customers. It is being adopted by more and more power utilities in response to line harmonic problems they and their customers have experienced.

Line Reactors for ac Drives

Used on Power Input Side of Motor Controllers➤ Line reactors protect the motor control from voltage

surges (spikes) and noise from the incoming power source. Some motor controls may require a minimum amount of power line impedance to protect the motor control from short circuit currents and to provide smoothing of the power waveform if the short circuit capability of the power line is many times greater than the continuous current rating of the motor control. The reactors also protect other electronic equipment from electrical noise (harmonics) that may be created by the motor control. In most cases the line reactor should be p laced as close to the motor control as possible.

Used on Power Input Side of Multiple Motor Controllers➤ When connecting several motor controls to a

common power source one line reactor per motor

control should be considered. The reactors should be connected between the power source and each motor control for optimum protection of the motor controls and minimal noise to the power source. The separate line reactors will also provide filtering between the motor controls and help eliminate crosstalk.

Used between Motor Controller and Motor➤ When used between a motor and motor control

line reactors serve several useful functions such as protecting the motor control from a short circuit at the motor and limits the rate of rise of motor surge currents. More importantly on newer motor controls utilising fast turn on power devices, line reactors slow down the rate of rise of the power supplied to the motor end improves the continuity of the waveform supplied to the motor.

By improving the continuity or smoothness of the power waveform supplied to the motor, the motor has extra insurance against premature failure due to turn to turn winding failures. In most cases the line reactor should be placed as close to the motor control as possible.

Used between Motor Controller and Multiple Motors➤ When one motor control is operating multiple

motors, a single line reactor can typically be used between the motors and the motor control. The single reactor should be sized to provide the total current draw of all the motors connected to the motor control. For maximum protection of the motor windings, one reactor per motor should be considered in shared controller applications. The use of individual reactors will more closely match the motor load and minimise motor operating temperature and noise.

The Baldor H2 family of drives operate three phase induction motors in several control modes as either an open or closed

loop control. Open loop speed control is available as Inverter Volts per Hertz and Encoderless Vector. Closed loop Vector control is accomplished using a sophisticated fourth generation space vector control algorithm and motor feedback. H2 drive models are also available to control closed loop permanent magnet AC servomotors using motor feedback.

All Baldor H2 drives include the industry leading removable keypad plus simple and consistent series-wide programming routines for fast set-up and user-friendly operation.
