This is remarkable since migrant populations often differ fromnativepopulationswithrespecttopatternsoffamilyformation, householdcompositionand socio-economic position. In Belgium, non-European migrant populations inparticularhavelowerratesofunmarriedcohabitationandoftenenterintoaco-ethnicunion.Inaddition,researchhasindicatedahigherfertilityrateandhigherincidenceofmultigenerational households which include grandparents alongside parents andchildren. Non-European migrants also experience more disadvantages on the labourmarket and in the educational system. The interplay of these characteristics amongmigrantgroupsprovidesagoodopportunitytostudyexistingtheoriesonrelationshipdissolution. Studying these theories among different subgroups allows us to indicatewhether they are universally applicable or need to be nuanced when dealing withminority populations. First, this paper describes patterns of relationship dissolutionamong migrant populations in Belgium. We describe both timing and propensity ofrelationshipdisruptionandcomparefirstandsecondgenerationmigrantsofdifferentorigin groups to the native Belgian population. Second, we analyze to what extenthousehold composition is associated with varying relationship dissolution risks. Wecontribute to the existing literature by paying specific attention to more complexhousehold forms such as multigenerational households. Due to the specificcharacteristicsofmigrantpopulations,weexpecttheroleofhouseholdcompositiontodifferbetweenmigrantandnon-migrantpopulations.

We therefore conclude that it isimportant to incorporate both partnership status and the presence of childrenwhenstudyingwhiteflightandavoidance.
