This study consists of a critical analysis of the ideas and thoughts of Muhammad Asad (Leopold Weiss, 1900-1992), an Austrian convert to Islam, on the concept of making Pakistan an Islamic State. Asad, after his conversion from Judaism to Islam in 1926, emerged as the defender of the faith. On his arrival in the Indo-Pak Sub-continent in 1932, Allama Muhammad Iqbal persuaded him to elucidate the intellectual premises of the future Islamic State, i.e., Pakistan. Asad was a staunch supporter of the Pakistan movement. To him the creation of a political entity for the Muslims of the Sub-continent was the only way, to the revival of all the dormant hopes of Islam. With the emergence of Pakistan Asad strongly argued in favour of the idea of Islamic polity/ Islamic state as an alternative to secular polity inherited from British Colonialism. Asad endeavoured to elaborate the Islamic concept of statehood and community upon which the newly born political organization might draw. He formulated a blueprint of the Islamic Constitution and propounded a theoretical model of the Islamic state and also developed a framework for modern political Institutions in the Islamic milieu. Abstract

"The Reconstruction of Islamic State : An Analytical Study of

Muhammad Asad's Thought". This study consists of a critical analysis of the

ideas and thoughts of Muhammad Asad (Leopold Weiss, 1900-1992), an

Austrian convert to Islam, on the concept of making Pakistan an Islamic

State. Asad, after his conversion from Judaism to Islam in 1926, emerged

as the defender of the faith. On his arrival in the Indo-Pak Sub-continent in

1932, Allama Muhammad Iqbal persuaded him to elucidate the intellectual

premises of the future Islamic State, i.e., Pakistan. Asad was a staunch

supporter of the Pakistan movement. To him the creation of a political entity

for the Muslims of the Sub-continent was the only way, to the revival of all the

dormant hopes of Islam. With the emergence of Pakistan Asad strongly

argued in favour of the idea of Islamic polity/ Islamic state as an alternative to

secular polity inherited from British Colonialism. Asad endeavoured to

elaborate the Islamic concept of statehood and community upon which the

newly born political organization might draw. He formulated a blueprint of the

Islamic Constitution and propounded a theoretical model of the Islamic state

and also developed a framework for modern political Institutions in the Islamic

milieu. He also formulated a scheme to implement the Shari'ah in Pakistan

and to reform the education system.

This study argues that Asad's proposed theoretical model / blueprint of

the Islamic state could provide appropriate foundation for the reconstruction

  • of a viable Islamic state in modern times. The argument of this study is based

on the basic primary sources, i.e., the works of Muhammad Asad, the reports

of his interviews and his unpublished correspondence.
