DescriptionThe Above Deck Automatic Retractable Security Cover (ADARSC) acts as a horizontal fencekeeping children and pets out of the pool while controlling humidity. Operated with a turn of a key, thecover automatically retracts for convenient access to your pool. The ADARSC is available for allstandard pool widths.

Placement ConsiderationsThe ADARSC can be placed at the front or the rear of the pool. If the pool is to be fully abovegroundor partially in-ground, then a support structure must be built to support the ADARSC's DriveMechanism. The ADARSC mechanism requires 18” horizontally from the inside edge at the end ofthe pool. Installations that place one side of the pool against a wall must maintain a minimumclearance of 9-1/2” from the pool panel inner surface to the wall.

Installation Instructions

Drive Mechanism Placement1) Place the Drive Mechanism on the pool deck so that the black plastic track guides are facing the

pool. If the Bench is attached, position it so that the opening in the Bench is facing the pool. Centerthe bench to the inside edge of the pool. The edge of the bench closest to the pool should be aminimum of 4” from the inside edge of the pool.

Track Placement2) Prepare the (4) sections of track by laying them along the length of the pool with the opening in the

track facing the pool. Use the track splices to align the adjoining tracks. A small dab of siliconecan be used to keep the track splices from moving inside the track.

3) Install the End Pulley Assembly in the end of each track opposite the Drive Mechanism. Flip thetrack over. Leave the pulley cap hold down screw in place and loosen the bottom screw until theretaining plate is backed off enough so that the upper and lower plates will slide into the undersideof the track. Tighten down the bottom screw so that the plates compress onto the grooves in thetrack. Once tight, the End Pulley Assembly should not pull out of the track.

4) The tracks will extend 7 1/4” beyond the inside edge of the pool at the end with the pulley. Thetracks will extend 6 3/4” beyond the inside edge of the pool at the Drive Mechanism end. Thedistance from the inside edge of one track to the inside edge of the opposing track is equal to thepool width plus 1”. Note: If a narrow coping is used and the track needs to be cut, remove excesstrack from the pieces closest to the Drive Mechanism.

5) At the Drive Mechanism end of the track, a 1/4” hole needs to be drilled 7/16” from the end of thetrack in the center for the threaded stud on the track end guide.

Securing Track and Drive Mechanism6) It is advisable to take a diagonal measurement between the track guide tab nut and the screw on

the pulley cap on the opposite track to make sure both measurements are the same and the tracksare square to the pool. To attach the track to the Drive Mechanism, remove the nylox nut from thetrack guide and place the hole in the track over the threaded stud. Note: If the track was cut, thenthis hole will have to be re-drilled.

7) Once the tracks are square, anchor each track using the provided track screws. The track must beanchored no more than 6” and no less than 2” from the Pulley end. If the hole in the track doesnot fall in the appropriate location, a new hole must be drilled and countersunk.

8) If the Bench is fastened to the Drive Mechanism, remove the two cap screws at the bottom ofeach side of the bench that secure the Bench to the Drive Mechanism. Gently lift the Bench off ofthe Drive Mechanism. Secure the Drive Mechanism to the pool deck. A minimum of 2 holes oneach mounting platform must be used to secure the unit to the pool deck.

Securing the Hydraulic Hose to the Drive Mechanism9) Drill two 1” holes through the pool deck to allow the hydraulic hoses to pass through and attach to

the Drive Mechanism. The holes need to be drilled on the side opposite of the rope reels. On thefront and back of that mounting platform, there are cutouts where the holes need to be drilled.

If the cover is mounted at the front then the hose connection will be made at the front left corner ofthe pool. If the cover is mounted at the rear then the hose connection will be made at the rear right ofthe pool.

Connecting the Power Unit to the Drive Mechanism10) Locate the Power Unit in a remote location, typically with the other pool equipment. Attach the

hydraulic hose to the Power Unit and then feed the hose through the holes in the deck and attach tothe manifold on the Drive Mechanism. Either hose can be attached to either port on the manifold.

Wiring and Filling the Power Unit with Hydraulic Fluid11) The Power Unit has a temporary-use plug in cord attached to the hard wire conduit and a short

length of conduit connected to the key switch. This allows for a temporary hook up for installationand testing to ensure the key is turning the proper components. The Power Unit needs to bepermanently installed by a licensed electrician using a 110 volt 20 amp GFCI breaker. The keyswitch conduit can be lengthened to accommodate a remote location. The key switch must belocated within eyesight of the pool.

12) Ensure that the hose connections to the Power Unit and manifold are tight and secure. Removebreather cap on Power Unit and add hydraulic fluid to the Power Unit reservoir about an inch fromthe top and reinstall the breather cap. Start up the Power Unit by turning the momentary switch (itdoes not matter which way) and hold it until the cable reel or cover drum turns smoothly (it doesnot matter which component turns). Only turn the key switch in the opposite direction afterthe hoses and the reservoir are completely full of fluid. This will ensure that the least amountof air gets into the system as possible. Check the Power Unit tank level as the reservoir will havebeen partially drained and will likely require some re-filling now that the hoses have been filled.FILL ONLY TO ABOUT ONE INCH TO THE TOP OF THE RESERVOIR. (1 quart of fluidfills approximately 35 linear feet of 3/8 hose).

13) Check to verify switch direction. Turning the Key Switch to CLOSE should activate and turn thecable reel in a clockwise direction (standing behind the cover mechanism facing the pool).Turning the key to OPEN should start the cover drum in the counterclockwise direction (standingin the same observer position). If the direction of the Key Switch does not correspond to the

above, either reverse the hose connections on the Power Unit or exchange leads 2 and 8 (red andblue) on the low voltage key switch (unplug or turn power off before switching these wires). If thekey switch conduit is extended, be sure to mark the red and blue wires beforehand.

Installation of the Cover Fabric and Leading Edge14) Remove the pulley end caps at the end of the track using a Phillips screwdriver. Use a wide flat

screwdriver and unscrew the threaded pulley from the pulley retainer plate and stud.

15) Remove the cover from its protective sheath. Unroll the cover making sure that the leading edgeguides are facing down (stainless steel shield is facing up). Remove the top half of each track endguide at the Drive Mechanism. Feed the cover fabric end opposite the leading edge into the trackfrom the pulley end of the tracks. Once started in the tracks, pull the cover across the pool

Page 7: Above Deck ARSC Supplemental Guidec3366550.r50.cf0.rackcdn.com/pdfs/AboveDeckARSC... · Above Deck ARSC Supplemental Guide Page 6 of 12 Endless Pools Inc. 12/11/2009 above, either

towards the Drive Mechanism. It is best to do this with 2 people to ensure that the cover travels inthe track evenly. Pull the cover back far enough so that the leading edge guides are into thetracks.

16) Before installing the leading edge, decide from which side it will be installed. It can be installedfrom either side; the only factor is the surrounding environment. The leading edge must extend intothe space adjacent to the pool.

17) Grab the front of the cover below the leading edge guide and start the leading edge onto thebeaded edge of the fabric so that the brackets on each end of the leading edge are facing down. While holding the fabric taut, slide the leading edge across the fabric until the opposite side isreached. Position the leading edge on the fabric so that there is about 1” of fabric sticking out ofeach side of the leading edge. Insert a small panhead screw into the pre-drilled hole at each end ofthe leading edge.

18) Gently lift up on the leading edge guide (attached to fabric) until it stops. The leading edge bracketshould be at this same angle. If this is not the case, then the bracket may have to be bent slightly.Gently place the leading edge on top of the leading edge guides. Fasten the leading edge guide tothe leading edge using the 5/16” x 1” stainless steel hex head bolt and nylon nut and washer. The

Page 8: Above Deck ARSC Supplemental Guidec3366550.r50.cf0.rackcdn.com/pdfs/AboveDeckARSC... · Above Deck ARSC Supplemental Guide Page 6 of 12 Endless Pools Inc. 12/11/2009 above, either

bolt with the washer should come up through the bottom of the leading edge guide and through thecenter hole of the leading edge bracket. Tighten down the nylon nut so that it is just snug againstthe bracket. Once tight, back off the nut about a half turn. This bolt must remain loose so thatthe leading edge may float back and forth. This allows for any variance in the trackparallels.

19) Screw the threaded end of the track pulley back onto the track. Take the end of the cover ropeand feed it into the return slot of the track, through the track guide and out under the cover drum.Replace the pulley caps and secure by using the short Phillips screws.

20) On the cover drum there is a weld seam with a small sheet metal screw securing the drum to theend casting or plastic hub. This screw is used to fasten the end corner of the fabric to the coverdrum. Place the screw approximately 1” from the end of the fabric on the stitch line where

Page 9: Above Deck ARSC Supplemental Guidec3366550.r50.cf0.rackcdn.com/pdfs/AboveDeckARSC... · Above Deck ARSC Supplemental Guide Page 6 of 12 Endless Pools Inc. 12/11/2009 above, either

beaded edge attaches to the cover fabric. If done properly, the beaded edge will just hang overonto the tapered portion of the drum.

The drum has a series of pre-drilled holes in line with the end screws. Find the center of the coverfabric by pulling the cover tight across the drum and securing the fabric to the center hole using theprovided pan head sheet metal screws. Keeping the cover fabric flat and working out from thecenter of the drum, fasten the cover to the drum until one hole remains. Now, fold the excesscover fabric over on itself and screw the cover fabric down through the fold in the remaining holein the drum. Repeat for the other side.

21) Ensure the cover is evenly draped across the pool and the leading edge is centered between thetracks. Now turn on the power and turn the key switch to OPEN, winding the cover onto the coverdrum until the leading edge is stopped just before it hits the track guides.

Stringing the Pulley System22) Standing behind the cover mechanism facing the pool, take the right hand cover rope and feed it

through the pulley block aligned with the track towards the compensating pulley. Feed the ropethrough the compensating pulley from the back towards the pool. Then feed the rope from theback to the front of the unused pulley furthest away from the rope reel. Bring the rope to theunderside of the rope reel.

23) For the left hand side, feed the rope around the pulley aligned with the track towards the centercompensating pulley. Feed it through the compensating pulley from the back towards the pool andbring the rope to the underside of the rope reel.

24) Pull both ropes taut under the cable reels making sure that the compensating pulley is in thecenter of its slot. Hold the ropes together and wrap a small amount of tape around each ropeapproximately 30 inches past the rope reel. Cut off the excess rope just beyond the tape. Aftercutting the rope, burn the ends of the rope with a lighter or match to prevent the rope from fraying.

25) There are two support brackets attached to the hydraulic hoses. These are designed to keep thehoses out of the way of the fabric drum. Position them within the bench, but away from the fabricdrum and secure to the deck.

26) Power the rope reel by turning the key on the momentary switch to CLOSE until the two drilledholes in the reel center are facing upwards. Take the rope ends and insert each rope into itscorresponding hole and into the hollow center of the reel. Pull the ropes through and tie a knot inthe end of each rope. Once knotted, pull the ropes back out so the knots are firmly against thehollow center of the reel.

27) This next step requires a helper. Hold both ropes away from the reel, making sure that thecompensating pulley is still in the center of its slot, and have your helper turn the key toCLOSE. The rope should be gathering on the reel; release the rope just before the rope is tighton the reel.

Once the ropes are tight, holding the key to CLOSE should cause the cover to travel across thepool. Release the switch once the cover reaches the pulley end of the tracks.

Skew Adjustment28) Turn and hold the key to OPEN. This will pull the cover back across the pool. If one side of the

cover is winding up faster then the other, a skew adjustment is required. Turn and hold the key toCLOSE to take the cover back across the pool prior to adjusting for skew. The cover drum istapered on each end. The fabric being wound up on the wider part of the drum is being wound upfaster than the fabric on the narrower part. If the fabric is coming back faster on the left side, thenthe drum has to be moved to the right or vice versa. Only move the drum an 1/8”-1/4” peradjustment. To move the drum, loosen the nuts securing the motor bracket to the mounting plate on the sideopposite of the rope reel. Slide the entire drum assembly to adjust.

Pressure Relief Setting on the Power Unit29) The pressure setting on the Power Unit should be high enough to move the cover back and forth

across the pool, but low enough to stop the cover simply by grabbing the leading edge. Thiscomes pre-set from the factory. However, an adjustment may be required. The relief valve is onthe side of the Power Unit below the solenoid valve. Loosen the 9/16” lock nut and turn the reliefvalve with a 3/16” Allen wrench. Turn the relief valve clockwise to increase the pressure andcounter-clockwise to reduce the pressure. Once you have the correct setting be sure to tighten thelock nut to hold the new setting.

Installation of Composite Bench27) When the bench is ready to be installed, ensure that the top end panel has been removed. Place

the bench on top of the Drive Mechanism aligning the holes in the bench end brackets over theholes on the Drive Mechanism mounting platforms. Replace the screws and tighten. Place thetop panel back on the bench.
