President's MessageMy Dear Rotarians,

Bye till next week…..Thank You

Last week was indeed an interesting business meet. Our IPP Rtn Mahesh V Murthy and his team presented the Balance sheet of the club for the year 2010-11. It was interesting because the General Body had a healthy debate on the Balance Sheet. I thank on behalf of Midtown IPP Rtn Mahesh V Murthy and his team for presenting the Balance Sheet. This month being the Magazine Month, today we have organized Editors Meet. Our Editor Rtn Dr Prahlad has done a wonderful job so far and need to be congratulated. He has designed today's program and i am sure it will be an interesting one. Look forward to the month ahead as we have good programs coming in. I wish you all a very prosperous financial year 2012-13.

My Dear Rotarians,

April is the magazine month in Rotary Calendar. In this regard Midtown begins the month with Editors' meet today. I, as the editor of the bulletin 'About Us' plan today's meeting for brainstorming on 'The club Bulletin'. I am bringing together the past, future, potential editors of the club and other intellectuals for a discussion forum on various aspects of the Bulletin. The editors of the other clubs in our zone are also invited and I hope they will add their dimensions to the discussion. The members will definitely participate actively and ultimately will help the cause of bringing a better bulletin in future. At this juncture, I would like to express my sincere thanks to all the members who have been contributing to the bulletin by writing articles, reports and in many other ways. You have helped me to bring this bulletin successfully.Let me end my editorial with this small tit-bit

A blind man was begging at New York streets, with a board written“I AM BLIND, HELP ME” A guy passing that side saw him.He took the board and wrote something. On that day blind man got heavy collection. Can you guess what he wrote? He wrote “YOU ARE SO BEAUTIFUL, BUT I CAN'T SEE YOU”Expressions can change life. Dear friends, that

is what I have learnt being an editor of About Us. To express myself, to give expressions to others...

International Women's Day is celebrated on March th

8 every year. But throughout March, a number of programmes are held and women who have made a difference are honoured. Innerwheel has taken the opportunity of celebrating Women's Day amongst those people who have stood by us and supported us both morally & monetarily-none other than our own Midtown Rotarians.

Being a woman is a terribly difficult task, since it consists of primarily dealing with men. By and large, mothers and housewives are the only workers who do not have regular time off. They are the great vacation-less class.

Historically, women have been suppressed and treated unfairly. International Women's Day can be traced back to the women's suffrage movement in the late nineteenth century. But even in this day and age, women face discrimination and prejudice. Yet, women all over the world continue to work hard to make a difference, to alter their lives and the lives of others. International Women's Day is the story of ordinary women as makers of history; it is rooted in the centuries old struggle of women to participate in society on an equal footing with men. The day is about celebrating the vital role women play in enhancing economic security for their families, communities and countries as a whole. It is an occasion to honour and praise women for their accomplishments. The UN theme for International Women's Day 2012 is “Empower Women – End Hunger and Poverty”.

The programme began with the Innerwheel prayer by Mrs.Geetha Krishna followed by a melodious invocation by the two little singing mynas, AnnetsPrerana & Pranav. The two women achievers Dr.H.V.Rama & Dr.UlfathFathima, recognized by Innerwheel were introduced by Mrs.Prabha Prahlad. They were honoured by PDC Chandrika Raghu and RtnRaghavendra respectively.

Dr. H.V.Rama, who has given more than 200 radio talks, spoke on how women can be empowered even before they are born, and how we as members of social organizations can make a difference by educating and empowering rural women. She gave examples of the social stigma women face for having delivered a girl child, and how she has helped childless couples to

International Women's Day @ Midtownadopt a girl child from such rural families. Dr. Rama is an inspiration to Innerwheel members who strive to work towards the upliftment of women.

Dr. UlfathFathima enlightened the audience about the PNDT (Preconception & Post natal Diagnostic) Act and the punishment imposed on doctors of diagnostic centers for revealing the sex of the child before birth. She went on to say how the change in male-female ratio is a major concern for the society. She has set an example herself, as to how we can work towards rural upliftment, by adopting a slum area called Onde Mataram.

The two doctors truly inspired and encouraged us to work towards the noble cause of women empower ment. Mrs.Anupama Ravindranath gave the vote of thanks and invited the doctors to join our club in true Bhanuchandran style.

Once upon a time a married couple celebrated their 25th marriage anniversary. They had become famous in the city for not having a single conflict in their period of 25 years. Local newspaper editors had gathered at the occasion to find out the secret of their well known "happy going marriage".

Editor: "Sir. It's amazingly unbelievable. How did you make this possible?”

Husband recalling his old honeymoon days said: "We had been to Shimla for honeymoon after marriage. Having selected the horse riding finally, we both started the ride on different horses. My horse was pretty okay but the horse on which my wife was riding seemed to be a crazy one.

On the way ahead, that horse jumped suddenly, making my wife topple over. Recovering her position from the ground, she patted the horse's back and said "This is your first time". She again climbed the horseand continued with the ride. After a while, it happened again. This time she again kept calm and said "This is your second time" and continued. When the horse dropped her third time, she silently took out the revolver from the purse and shot the horse dead !!

I shouted at my wife: "What did you do you psycho. You killed the poor animal. Are you crazy?!!.

She gave a silent look and said: "This is your first time!!!!! ".”

Husband:"That's it. We are happy ever after."

Tom Henderson, CEO of ShelterBox, and John Hewko, RI general secretary, during the signing of a project partner agreement this month.

Rotary International and ShelterBox, a grassroots disaster relief organization, signed a project partner agreement this month, allowing the two organizations to collaborate more closely to provide relief and temporary shelter to survivors of natural disasters.

“Project partner” is a special status RI gives to groups started or managed by Rotary clubs. The agreement will build on the strengths of both organizations in responding to disasters all over the world.

“Our Rotary friends have always been there ready to assist – from generous donations to direct operational support on the ground Rotary has always been part of our DNA,” said Tom Henderson, ShelterBox CEO. “I feel like we have 34,000 ShelterBox offices around the world working together to help those who have lost everything when they need us the most.”

Saving lives : RI General Secretary John Hewko said the agreement will enable Rotary club members to have an immediate, lifesaving impact in communities hit by natural disasters. “ShelterBox will be able to ensure that local Rotarians are provided an opportunity to participate in the distribution of ShelterBox containers,” he said.

Each ShelterBox typically provides a bespoke tent designed to withstand extreme weather conditions, stove, water purification kit, blankets, tools, and other necessities to help a family survive for six months or more after a disaster.

Henderson, a civil engineer and former search-and-rescue diver for the British Royal Naval, founded ShelterBox in 2000. Its response teams of trained volunteers have brought lifesaving supplies to victims of more than 175 disasters in nearly 80 countries.

Mutual goals : “For more than 10 years, ShelterBox has given light to over one hundred thousand families worldwide in their darkest hour,” said Hewko. “This project partner agreement represents our mutual goal of helping those in need. It gives RI a forward-facing approach to immediate disaster relief.”

Noted Henderson: “This partnership with Rotary International is a formal recognition of our good work over the past 12 years. It will help Rotarians get a better understanding of what we do. I hope Rotarians worldwide will see us as a coherent and able disaster relief organization.”

Earlier this month, a ShelterBox team distributed more than 550 tents to communities in Madagascar where powerful cyclones left more than 250,000 people homeless.
