Preface:

The following information has been prepared in order to familiarize you with the characteristics and terminology of the lighting products that are manufactured by Ashley Lighting. It is our hope that you will find this material to be informative, educational, and that it will greatly assist you in your efforts to specify and purchase lighting products.

U.L. Listing:

Underwriters Laboratories (U.L.) is the worlds most recognized and trusted source for product compliance. Electrical products that bear the U.L. mark have been subjected to a series of tests and procedures that make them safe to use for the consumer. U.L. provides two separate and distinct listings for electric lighting mechanisms. These two listings are PORTABLE and DIRECT. Each of these two categories have their own identifiable labels that must be placed on the products and in an area that may be observed without requiring disassembly.

The defining difference between a PORTABLE and DIRECT fixture is that a portable lamp possesses apower cord with a plug for electrical connection. The cord of a DIRECT fixture does not have a plug and is directly wired to a junction box or outlet. For this reason, these fixtures are often referred to as “direct wired”. Surface mounted lamps that have power supply cords with plugs are often a source of confusion regarding the U.L. listing. U.L. recognizes this as a PORTABLE fixture, even though it attaches to a wall. Ashley Lighting has been certified by U.L. to produce both PORTABLE and DIRECT lighting fixtures.

U.L. listing is typically required for all major Hospitality brands. In addition to this, state and local electrcal codes typically require this listing before allowing a certificate of occupancy for the property. It is important to note here that on rare occasions, local codes are contradictory to U.L. codes. It is the responsibility of the General Contractor to know if U.L. listing is acceptable for the local codes. The U.L. label, which is attached to each U.L listed product, identifies the fixture as either PORTABLE or DIRECT.In addition to this, it also contains an identification number for the manufacturer of the fixture. In order to be certified as a manufacturer of U.L listed and recognized fixtures, a manufacturer must commit tothe following standards:

• Use only electrical components that are U.L. listed and labeled. • Perform a series of electrical tests on each manufactured product that ensure that there are no breaks in the electrical components or connections. These tests are performed with exceedingly high voltage that enable the manufacturer to detect potentially unsafe products. • Submit to unannounced sight inspections by field representatives of U.L. These field inspectors will check both finished goods and works in progress for U.L. compliance. • Submit all new products to U.L. for compliance testing.

UL Listing-Dry Location: • A dry location is an indoor area that is not normally subject to dampness. It may include a location

subject to temporary dampness provided ventilation is adequate to prevent any accumulation of moisture. • Dry Locations include kitchens, living rooms, dining rooms, bedrooms, foyers, hallways and most areas in bathrooms.UL Listing-Damp Location: • A damp location is an exterior or interior location that is normally or periodically subject to condensa-

tion of moisture in, on or adjacent to the electrical components of a lighting fixture or ceiling fan. • Indoor Damp Locations include indoor pool areas, utility rooms and over bathtubs or showers in bathrooms (without risk of direct water contact).

ALL ASHLEY LIGHTING PRODUCTS ARE U.L. LISTED (Dry and Damp Locations).

ADA Requirements:

The ADA sets guidelines for accessibility to places of public accommodation and commercial facilities by individuals with disabilities. These guidelines are to be applied during the design, construction, and alteration of such buildings and facilities to the extent required by regulations issued by Federal agencies, including the Department of Justice, under the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990. Corridor Wall Sconces (in part):4.4.1 General. Object projecting from the walls with their leading edges between 27 inches and 80 inches above the finished floor shall protrude no more than 4 inches into walks, halls, corridors, passage-ways, or aisles.

Switches (in part):4.27.3* Height. The highest operable part of controls, dispensers, receptacles, and other operable equipment shall be placed within at least one of the reach ranges specified in 4.2.5 and 4.2.6. Electrical and communications system receptacles on walls shall be mounted no less than 15 in (380 mm) above the floor.

Note: Switching for floor lamps not to exceed 48”.

4.27.4 Operation. Controls and operating mechanisms shall be operable with one hand and shall not require tight grasping, pinching, or twisting of the wrist. The force required to activate controls shall be no greater than 5 lbs. (22.2 N).

Title 20 (California):

Portable luminaries manufactured on or after January 1, 2010 shall meet one or more of the following requirements: • Be equipped with a dedicated fluorescent lamp socket connected to a high frequency electronic ballast

contained within the portable luminaire; • Be equipped with one or more GU-24 line-voltage sockets and not rated for use with incandescent

lamps of any type, including line voltage or low voltage; • Be an LED luminaire or a portable luminaire with an LED light engine with integral heat sink, and comply with the minimum requirements.

Title 24 (California):

Indoor lighting is one of the single largest consumers of energy (kilowatt-hours) in a commercial building, representing about a third of electricity use. The objective of the Title 24 non-residential lighting stan-dards is the effective reduction of this energy use, without compromising the quality of lighting or task work. The Title 24 non-residential lighting standards are the result of the involvement of many repre-sentatives of the lighting design and manufacturing community, and of enforcement agencies across the state.

Portables-Table and Floors-Key Assembly Features:

A. Base • The Base is the terminating point for the threaded metal tube (pipe) that extends from the socket to

the base weight. It allows for the lamp to be tightened securely by adjusting the locknuts against the inside surface of the base weight.

• It also serves as a decorative concealment for the base weight. • Table lamps bases are often used to house USB ports and/or electrical outlets for electronics usage. B. Base Weights • Base weights are provided on all floor and table lamps in order to provide stability. • U.L regulations require that floor and table lamps be stable enough to be placed on an eight degree

incline without “tipping” over. This is referred to as a “Tip Test”. • All Ashley Lighting floor and table lamps comply with the U.L. regulations for tipping.C. Column or Lamp Body • The column serves as a decorative concealment for the threaded metal tube (pipe) that extends from

the socket to the base weight. It also provides support to allow the lamp to be tightened securely.D. Center Pipe • The pipe is a steel tube that is threaded on each end. This pipe is used to secure the socket, on one

end of the lamp, to the base weight on the other end of the lamp.E. Non Skid Felt is used on all table top fixtures.

Wall Mounted Fixtures-Direct Wired and Portable-Key Assembly Features:

A. Back Plate • The back plate, of a wall mounted fixture, is the decorative cover that serves to connect the functional

arm of the fixture to the wall. • The back plate will typically contain the switch that is used to operate the socket of the fixture. • It may also contain other functional items such as electrical outlets or USB Ports.B. Mounting Plate • The mounting plate is the removable portion of a back plate assembly that is attached to the wall. • The back plate is then attached to the mounting plate. • These mounting plates are typically constructed of galvanized steel and are attached to the wall by

means of screws or hollow wall anchors. • Ashley Lighting mounting plates are manufactured from twenty gauge galvanized steel.C. Arm Assembly • The arm is the portion of a wall mounted fixture that is constructed of several decorative elements,

as well as the functional socket. • There is typically a horizontal attachment that connects the back plate to the vertical portion of the

arm assembly. This attachment may be stationary or movable. • The arm assembly may constructed of a wide assortment of materials as well as offered in a variety

of finishes.D. Cord Covers • Portable (Fixtures with a cord and plug connection to a wall outlet) wall mounted lighting fixtures typically have a decorative cover that is supplied to conceal the cord from the point that it exits the

back plate, to below the furniture, over which it is mounted. • The most common cord cover length is 24”, but they can be produced in lengths up to 48”.

Fluorescent: A fluorescent lamp converts electrical energy into useful light much more efficiently than incandescent lamps. The typical luminous efficacy of fluorescent lighting systems is 50–100 lumens per watt, several times the efficacy of incandescent bulbs with comparable light output.

LED: LED can provide 80% energy savings over incandescent bulbs. LEDs contain no mercury, lead or other hazardous materials as with fluorescent. They turn on instantly, and are dimmable. There are many LED options available!

Incandescent: Standard incandescent bulbs are being phased out for general lighting in favor of more energy-efficient lighting alternatives. Still available as decorative bulbs featuring “vintage” shapes with varied filaments. Some of the vintage shapes are available in LED.

Kelvin: The Kelvin scale measures the hue of light. “Hue” in this technical meaning refers not just to col-or generally, but to the relative warmth of a specific light source--its spectrum frequency, or color temperature. Most commonly used is 2700 K and 3000 K.

molded polarized plugs. • Other options available.

Bolt-Down: • This system enables you to permanently attach a lamp to a table top or night

stand. • Cord can exit above or below the table surface to which it will be mounted. Exit

must be specified. • To ensure that the bolt-down system will work with your table top or nightstand,

hole diameter and table top/nightstand thickness must be specified. We Suggest 1.5” to 1 3/4” diameter hole.

Lamp Shades:

Internal Structure:

A. Standard Framework and Fitters • Framework consists of a Top and Bottom ring. • Top Ring is commonly referred to as a “Spider”. • Top Ring establishes the top diameter and drop of the shade. • Bottom Ring established the bottom diameter of the shade. • Ashley Lighting uses 10 gauge wire. • Rings are available in plated and powder coated finishes. We recommend using powder coat in locations where humidity is a factor.

Shade Type:

A. Hardback • Fabric or paper is laminated to a Virgin Polystyrene inner lining. • Many Manufacturers use recycled polystyrene which leads to premature discoloration and disintegration of the product. • Virgin Polystyrene is available in varied gauges. Ashley Lighting uses .4mm as standard. • This is then secured to the top and bottom ring with adhesive tape, followed by trim, or hand rolled for no trim (Self Fold).B. Fabric Stretched • Stretched shades are made with full framework, top and bottom ring welded together by ribs. • Stretched shades are made with an inner fabric lining, usually white, and an outer fabric that is stretched over the full framework.

A. Non Rotation Bracket: • Ashley Lighting uses a Non-Rotation bracket on all oval, rectangular and square shades.B. Diffusers: • Available in acrylic and perforated metal. • Typically used at the top and/or bottom of a shade to diffuse view of bulbs and sockets and correlating “Hot Spots”. • Helps to minimize insect infiltration in the fixture.

Shade Fabrics and Trim:

A. Fabrics: • We offer a wide variety of custom and standard fabrics. Please consult factory for a current shade

fabric card.B. Custom Printed and Lasor Cut Patterns: • We would be happy to work with you to develop custom printed and/or lasor cut pattern for your

shade. C. Shade Trim • Shade trims are available in many colors, styles and thicknesses. Our standard trim is .5”. D. Most Commonly Used: • Double Fold-trim is adhered to the top and bottom the shade. • Single Fold-trim is adhered to the top and bottom of the shade. • Self Fold or Rolled Edge-Self Fold requires no trim. Fabric is glued and rolled around the top and bottom shade ring.

Shade Attachment:

A. Harp and Finial • A harp is the detachable bracket that attaches to the saddle serving as a mounting bracket for the shade. • Harp sizes ranging typically from 7” to 12”. • Harp, Saddles, and Finials are available in plated and powder coat finishes. Powder Coat is recommended in locations where humidity is a concern. • A finial is a threaded cap that screws onto the top of the harp to tighten and hold the lamp shade in

place. • Finials are available in a large array of styles.B. Uno Fitter • Used in place of a standard harp. • Uno ring fits onto a socket and is secured by a socket lock ring.C. Split Washer • Used when a standard harp or fitter can not be utilized. Secured with a twist lock feature and/or screws.D. Shade Riser • Used when a standard harp can not be utilized due to height or structural elements. A Riser is a tube

threaded on both ends, using a finial to lock the shade in place.

Finishing Options:

From standard wet paint, and hand applied finishes, all the way to powder coating we have the capabilities to apply the finishes that you are looking for. Standard options are Plating, Paint, Powder coat.

Care and Cleaning Instructions:

All Ashley Lighting products are manufactured and finished to meet Hospitality standards. All finishes are completed by the application of a final protective coating. For this reason, all products should be cleaned with a soft cloth that is dry and free of any cleaning solutions. Many cleaning solutions will cause the removal of this protective coating, thereby exposing the surface of the lamp to abrasion and corrosion. Climatizing:

All Ashley Lighting finishes are provided with a two coats of clear lacquer, as a final finish. This is done in order to maximize the durability and longevity of the finish. Many environments, such as coastal and high humidity areas, may require additional finish protection.
