Mi Kyung Je, Executive DirectorThere is a meeting that we await, as eagerly as we wait for thespring to finally come and melt away the weary cold and snow.This February, the AWCA received a special gift from the SaintAndrew Kim Church in Maplewood, NJ: a chance to meet withSister Claudia Haein Lee, who will be visiting New York & NewJersey by invitation from the church—to sit with her face to face,hear her story, and share my own. The thing about gifts is that theygive joy to both the giver and the receiver, but a great gift such asthis that is also unexpected brings bright laughter and a burst ofendorphins to we who receive it. Sister Claudia was born in 1945, and joined the OlivetanBenedictine Sisters in 1964. She was given the name Claudia,and began submitting her writing to the Catholic magazine'Sonyen (소년)' under the name Haein. In 1976, Sister Claudiapublished her first collection of poetry called 'The Land ofDandelions (민들레의 영토),' and since then has lived a life ofservice to the community as a religious leader and through hermany beautiful, heart­wrenching written works.The AWCA will be hosting a special event on Monday, March 16 at7pm, where for two hours we will join Sister Claudia as she sharesabout her poetry and about her life. The event is open to anyonewho wishes to meet Sister Claudia. There are some who ask: "CanI just go?" My response is this:"Yes... Just come. This great gift that we received so unexpectedly—the AWCA will wrap it up beautifully and share it with all of you."

제미경 사무총장추위와 쌓인 눈에 지쳐가는 우리에게 봄 소식만큼이나 기다려지는 만남이 있다.2015년 2월 초, AWCA는 뉴저지 메이플우드 성당으로부터 특별한선물을 받았다. 성당측의 배려로 뉴욕과 뉴저지를 방문하는 이해인수녀님과의 만남의 시간을 가질 수 있게 된 것이 그것이다. 얼굴과 얼굴을 가까이 맞대고 수녀님의 말씀을 듣고 나의 얘기를 할수 있는 만남이다. 선물이란 늘 주는 사람과 받는 사람 모두를 기쁘게하기 마련이지만, 기대치 않은 큰 선물이 주는 기쁨은 엔돌핀을 생성시키는 환한 웃음을 준다.이해인 수녀는 1945년생으로 1964년 성 베네딕토 수도회에 입회했다. 세례명은 클라우디아. ‘해인’이라는 필명으로 카톨릭에서 발간하는 ‘소년’지에 작품을 투고하기 시작해, 1976년 첫 시집 ‘민들레의 영토’ 등 마음을 울리는 수많은 글을 통해 수도자로서 봉사하는 삶을 살아왔다.AWCA는 3월 16일 월요일 오후 7시부터 두 시간 동안 ‘이해인 수녀님과 함께하는 시와 삶의 이야기’ 시간을 가진다. 이 시간은 이해인 수녀님을 만나기 원하는 누구라도 환영하는 자리이다. 간혹 “그냥 오면 됩니까?” 라는 질문을 하는 분들이 있다. 이에 대한 나의 대답은 다음과같다:“네.. 편하게 오십시오.. 예기치 않게 받은 큰 선물, AWCA가 예쁘게 포

장해서 여러분과 같이 나눕니다.”

Lunar New Year FestivalA special Lunar New Year Festival was held at the WestfieldGarden State Plaza on Saturday, February 28. The Westfield mall

hosted the event to celebrate with the local Korean and Chineseimmigrant communities, and the AWCA, along with the KoreanSenior Citizen's Association of NJ and Chinese immigrantorganizations participated in the event.On this day, the Joy Chorus of the AWCA Korean Senior Centerand the ISoriMoa children's choir performed Korean New Yearsongs wearing traditional Korean hanbok, and a Korean traditionaldance team and a Korean chef added to the festivities withtheir special performances.

음력설 잔치가든 스테이트 플라자몰에서 2월 28일 토요일 음력설 잔치가 열렸다.한인과 중국 이민자들을 위해 개최된 이 날의 행사는 가든 스테이트플라자 측이 주최하고, AWCA를 비롯해 뉴저지한인상록회, 중국계이민자 그룹등이 함께 참여했다.이날 행사에는 AWCA 시니어 합창단 조이합창단과 아이소리모아 어린이 합창단이 한복을 입고 설날 노래 및 한국동요를 선보였고, 한국국악팀의 춤과 한국 요리 시연 등 다양한 볼거리와 먹거리가 제공되었다.

Lunar New Year Luxury NightThe Westfield Garden State Plaza hosted a special LuxuryNight as a preview for the Lunar New Year Festival onFebruary 26, from 6 to 9 pm. A special lion dance wasperformed by a Chinese team, and a string quartet from theNew Jersey Music School provided elegant entertainmentfor the night as participating stores in the mall offeredspecial discounts to guests.

음력설 맞이 ­ 럭셔리 나이트2월 28일 토요일에 진행될 음력설 잔치를 알리고 소개하는 '음력설 럭셔리 나이트' 행사가 2월 26일 오후 6시부터 9시까지가든 스테이트 몰에서 열렸다. 이날 행사에서는 토요일 진행될설행사 홍보와 더불어, 중국 사자춤과 뉴저지 음악 학교의 클래식 연주 및 스토어 특별 할인 행사가 진행되었다.

AWCA, Beautiful Foundation, Hope Presbyterian Church:

Donations to #EdgewaterStrongOn February 19, in the spirit of the Lunar New Year, the AWCAdonated gift cards to the 41 Korean households affected by the fireat the Avalon in Edgewater, a total amount of $2,050. The HopePresbyterian Church also made a donation of $4,100 in gift cards,made possible by a special offering by its congregants. Membersof the Beautiful Foundation, who donated items to the bazaar thatmade the AWCA's donation possible, and Rev. Kwi An Kim andthe church session members were also present at the donationceremony.

AWCA, 아름다운재단, 한소망교회:아발론 피해자에 사랑의 기금

AWCA는 2월 19일 설날을 맞이해 '아발론' 에지워터 화재피해자 41가구에게 바자수익금으로 마련한 총 2,050달러 상당의 상품권을 전달했다. 전달식에서는 바자회에 물품을 후원해준 아름다운재단 USA관계자가 함께했으며, 교인들의 헌금으로 총 4,100달러 상당의 마트상품권을 준비한 한소망교회 김귀안 담임 목사와 당 회원들도 함께했다.

AWCA Mini Bazaar for #EdgewaterStrongOn February 11, the AWCA held a Mini Bazaar in the lobbyof Windsor Hall at the World of Wings (Butterfly Museum) inTeaneck as a fundraising event to support those affected bythe fire at the Avalon in Edgewater, and also to support theoperations of the AWCA's various programs. Donations fromthe Beautiful Foundation USA, Missha Cosmetics, Incoco,GITXM (bracken and mushrooms), and a women's blousecompany made the event possible. Half of the funds raisedat this event will be donated to those affected by the recentfire in Edgewater.

AWCA 아발론 피해자 돕기 미니 바자회AWCA는 2015년 2월 11일 티넥에 위치한 나비박물관 윈저홀로비에서 미니 바자회를 열고 에지워터 아발론 화재 피해자 및자체 프로그램 기금을 조성했다. 이날 바자회는 아름다운재단USA, 미샤 화장품, 인코코, 고사리와 버섯생산업체 긱섬, 그리고 여성블라우스 업체등에서 물품을 기부했다. AWCA는 이날조성된 바자회 수익금 절반을 화재 피해자들에게 전달할 계획이다.

Volunteering at Homeless Shelter in Paterson, NJ

The AWCA, along with 1004 Foundation and other Koreanorganizations, served a hot Korean meal to the patrons of theStraight & Narrow homeless shelter in Paterson, NJ, on themorning of January 16. The meal was made possible through thefunds raised at the bazaar held last October with the AWCA, TheKorea Daily, 1004 Foundation, Beautiful Foundation USA, theGlobal Children's Foundation, and more Korean organizations.Volunteers from each of these organizations came together on thisday to serve a delicious meal of bulgogi, japchae, and more to 240people, and had a wonderful time doing so.

NJ 패터슨 홈리스지원센터, 240명에게 한식 대접2015년 1월 16일 오전, 1004 파운데이션과 AWCA를 비롯한 한인단체들이 뉴저지주 패터슨에 위치한 홈리스 지원센터 '스트레이트 앤내로'에서 타민족 불우이웃들에게 따뜻한 한식을 제공했다. 이날 제공된 한식은 2014년 10월 AWCA, 중앙일보, 1004 파운데이션, 아름다운재단 USA, 그리고 글로벌어린이재단 등 한인단체가 공동으로 개최한 나눔바자회 수익금으로 제공되었다. 각 단체 임원 및 봉사자들은 240명의 어려운 타민족들에게 불고기와 잡채 등 따뜻한 음식을 제공하며 즐거운 시간을 보냈다.

Angel Basket Distribution CeremonyOn December 22, the AWCA and 1004 Foundationgathered in the Windsor Hall of the World of Wings (ButterflyMuseum) in Teaneck to distribute 41 care packages (valuedat $120 each) containing supplies and gift certificates to ourneighbors in need. These Angel Baskets were madepossible by the funds raised at the We­Ah­Ja Bazaar heldlast year in New York and New Jersey, and the World ofWings donated passes for free entry for two to the museumin each of the packages

사랑의 천사바구니 전달식AWCA와 1004 파운데이션은 2014년 12월 22일 뉴저지주 티넥 나비박물관 윈저홀에서 생필품과 마트 상품권들이 담긴120불 상당의 '사랑의 바구니' 41개를 한인과 타민족에게 전달

했다. 사랑의 천사바구니는 지난해 뉴욕과 뉴저지에 열렸던 위아자 나눔장터 수익금으로 준비되었으며, 나비박물관측에서는 두 명의 입장 가능한 박물관 무료입장권을 기부했다.

1004 Fund Distribution CeremonyThe distribution ceremony for the 1004 Fund, made possible bythe collective hearts of local Koreans in the community, was heldat The Korea Daily headquarters auditorium on December 19,2014. A total of $18,000 was distributed to 18 individuals who hadbeen recommended by volunteer organizations.

1004 펀드 지원금 전달식2014년 12월 19일, 한인들의 정성으로 조성된 1004 펀드 지원금 전달식이 중앙일보 본사 강당에서 열렸다. 이 날 전달식에서는 봉사단체들이 추천한 18명에게 총 1만8000달러의 지원금이 지급됐다.

Grace Hotline VolunteerInduction Ceremony

The AWCA Family Counseling Center held an induction

ceremony for its sixth class of Grace Hotline volunteers onDecember 18, 2014, and inducted 4 new volunteers. Thevolunteers, who completed a 6­week training course, beginvolunteering for the Hotline in January. The Grace Hotline isa mental health support hotline that operates on weekdaysfrom 9am to midnight each day.

그레이스 핫라인 자원봉사 수료식2014년 12월 18일 가정상담소는 제6기 그레이스 핫라인 자원봉사자 훈련 수료식을 열고 4명의 새로운 자원봉사자를 배출했다. 총 6주간 진행된 훈련 과정을 마친 자원봉사자들은2015년 1월부터 봉사자로 참여하게 된다. 그레이스 핫라인은평일 오전 9시부터 자정까지 운영되는 정신건강 핫라인이다.

AWCA Angel School10th Anniversary Celebration

The AWCA Angel School held a grand celebration of its tenthanniversary on Friday, December 12, 2014, at the World of WingsWindsor Hall with 100 students and families, AWCA programmembers, and other special guests. The PTA honored Angel

School founder and principal Rev. James Jinhong Kim on thisnight with a special Angel Award. The Angel School had its start10 years ago as a Korean school for adult adoptees and has sincedeveloped into the program it is today, where adopted childrenand their adoptive families meet on select Saturdays to discussand experience Korean culture and the Korean language together.

AWCA 엔젤입양인 한국학교 10주년 기념AWCA 엔젤입양인 한국학교 10주년 기념행사가 2014년 12월 12일금요일 뉴저지주 티넥에서 위치한 나비박물관 윈저홀에서 학생들과가족, AWCA 프로그램 회원 및 손님 등 총 100여명을 모시고 성대하게 열렸다. 이날 학부모회는 엔젤입양인 한국학교의 창립자이자 교장이신 김진홍 목사에게 공로상을 수여했다. 엔젤입양인 한국학교는10년 전 성인 입양인 학교로 시작해 오늘에 이르렀으며, 격주 토요일에 진행되는 한국학교에서는 다양한 한국 문화와 한국어를 입양아와입양부모가 함께 배울 수 있는 기회를 제공해왔다.

Andrew & Barbara Choi FamilyFoundation: Grant Awarded to AWCA

Family Counseling CenterThe AWCA Family Counseling Center was one of theorganizations selected by the Andrew & Barbara ChoiFamily Foundation to receive a grant in the amount of$5,000. The Korean American Family Service Center of NY,AHL Foundation, and the Korean Senior Citizen'sAssociation of NJ also received grants of $5,000 each, for atotal of $20,000 distributed by the foundation at theceremony held on December 3, 2014.

앤드류 & 바바라 최 패밀리 재단,AWCA 가정상담소에 기금 전달

앤드류 & 바바라 최 패밀리 재단이 출범하면서 선정한 기금수혜기관에 AWCA 가정상담소가 선정되어 5,000달러의 기금을받았다. 2014년 12월 3일 거행된 전달식에서는 AWCA외에도뉴욕가정상담소, 알재단, 뉴저지 한인 상록회가 선정되어 총 4개 기관에게 2만불의 기금이 전달되었다.

AWCA 34th Annual Fall Gala: A Great SuccessThe AWCA held its 34th Annual Fall Gala at The Terrace inParamus, NJ, on October 17, 2014. Over 300 guests, includingsupporters from the NY/NJ area, program members and volunteerswere in attendance at the event, which awarded the LeadershipAward to the night's keynote speaker Jinsoo Kim, the founder ofGrace Charity Foundation. Rev. Jung Ok Hwang, an ESL instructorat the Korean Senior Center, and Ms. Irene Fan, coordinator of theJapanese Senior Center, received merit awards at the event.Board member Susan Kwan planned the event as the chair of thegala committee, and a total of over $140,000 was raised this night.

AWCA 창립 34주년 연례만찬 ­­ 대성황2014년 10월 17일 뉴저지주 파라무스의 The Terrace 연회장에서 창립 34주년 기념 연례만찬이 열렸다. 300여명의 뉴욕.뉴저지 후원자및 프로그램 회원.자원봉사자들이 모인가운데 열린 이날 행사에서는김진수, Grace Charity Foundation의 설립자가 리더십어워드 수상과함께 기조연설을 했으며, 한국시니어프로그램의 황정옥 ESL 교사와일본시니어프로그램의 황옥선 코디네이터가 자원봉사자 상을 받았다. 이날 행사는 권수잔 이사가 준비위원장을 맡았으며 총 14만여불을 모금했다.

Kathy Memorial FundOn November 22, 2014, the AWCA held a memorial serviceat the World of Wings Windsor Hall Lobby, in honor of KathyHuynh, assistant director, who had passed away on October14, 2014. A memorial fund was also established in hermemory on this day.About a hundred people were in attendance at the service,including AWCA program members and board members.The memorial fund will be used to support the social serviceprogram that Kathy was dedicated to during her time at theAWCA.

Kathy Memorial Fund 조성AWCA는 2014년 11월 22일 티넥에 위치한 나비박물관 윈저홀 로비에서 10월 14일 사망한 최예경 (Kathy Huynh), 어시스턴트 디렉터의 추모식과 그의 이름을 딴 기금 조성식을 함께했다. 이날 행사에는 100여명의 AWCA 프로그램 회원들과 이사진이 참석했으며, 조성된 기금은 고인이 일해왔던 소셜 서비스 지원을 위해 쓰여진다.

We­Ah­Ja Charity MarketThe 1004 Foundation, The Korea Daily, Beautiful Foundation USA,

H&Y Mart, Global Children's Foundation, and the AWCA held aspecial Charity Market on October 25, 2014, at the H&Y Mart inRidgefield, NJ. The Charity Market, which was held in New York aswell as in New Jersey, raised a total of $11,758.95.

글로벌어린이재단 등이 공동 주관한 나눔장터가 2014년 10월 25일

뉴저지 리지필드 한양마트에서 열렸다. 뉴욕과 뉴저지 두곳에서 동시

에 열린 이 날의 행사에서는 총 1만1758불 95센트를 모았다.

Kihwa Scholarship CeremonyChristine Ha of Princeton University and Nahyun Park ofRutgers University were each awarded $3,000 as recipientsof the Kihwa Scholarship at the ceremony held on August20, 2014.

Family Counseling CenterAbout the AWCA Family Counseling Center

The AWCA Family Counseling Center was established inSeptember 1989 with the mission to help Koreans in New Jerseywho were struggling with mental health issues and adjusting tosociety. After moving to its current location in Teaneck in 2009, theFCC provides various mental health services to the community,including (1) counseling services 5 days a week, (2) Grace Hotlinefor mental health, and (3) educational seminars about mentalhealth topics that are open to the public.

Letter from a ClientDay after day, I continued to face conflicts with mychild, and my depression had been on the brink ofturning into despair when I came across the AWCA bychance. My child would exhibit hyperactive andunfocused behavior wherever we went, and as I lookedupon this child of mine, whose behavior often drove meto depression, I would often think, 'Why is my child theonly one like this?' and 'What did I do to deserve such achild?' But after seeing my child change through playtherapy, I soon came to realize the awful 'truth,' that thevery person that made my child this way was none otherthan myself.My inability to accept my child exactly as is, and mywrongful belief that there was terribly wrong if my childdid not display behaviors and appearances that I desiredto see ultimately drove my child astray. I am so thankfulto the counselor who helped me realize not only this, butalso that my actions had caused my child to also fall intoa deep depression. And I am even more thankful for thechance to receive healing myself through parentcounseling sessions, which allowed me to see the child inme who had also been deeply scarred in the past.I am also thankful that the AWCA offers a system ofpayment through a sliding scale based on the client'sincome, which allowed me and my child to receivecounseling without financial burden. I hope that theAWCA continues to move forward and make greatcontributions to the Korean­American community.

클라이언트의 편지매일 매일 반복되는 아이와의 갈등으로 깊은 우울이 절망으로

체념될 쯤 우연히 알게 된 AWCA. 어디서나 과잉행동과 산만

함으로 나를 우울하게 만드는 우리아이를 보면서 '왜 우리 아

이만 이럴까?' '내가 문슨 잘못을 했길래 이런 아이를 낳았을

까?' 생각하기를 수없이 했던 내가, '놀이치료'를 통해 변해가는

아이를 보면서 아이를 그렇게 만든 '장본인'이 바로 나였다는

끔찍한 '사실'을 인정하게 되었다.

'있는 그대로'의 아이의 모습을 부정하고 내가 원하는 행동과

모습을 보이지 않으면 문제가 있다고 여기는 나의 부적절한

사고방식과 언행이 아이를 더 어긋나게 하고 불행하게 만들었

으며 그것으로 인해 아이 또한 '깊은 우울'에 빠져 있었음을 알

게 해주신 상담사 선생님. 우리 아이뿐만 아니라 '부모상담'을

통해 내 안에 상처 받은 또 하나의 작은 아이를 들여다 보게 해

주시고 위로해 주심에 깊이 감사드리고 싶다.

더불어 상담자의 인컴 수준의 따라 상담료를 차등 지불하는

AWCA의 방침으로 인해 큰 무리없이 상담을 받을 수 있음에

감사드린다. 앞으로도 AWCA가 더욱 발전하길 바라며, 미국

내 한인 사회에 큰 공헌을 하기를 기대한다.

Home Care News 2015The AWCA Home Care is the first Asian­American organization to obtainthe Health Care Service Firm license, and currently provides home careservices to Korean and Chinese senior citizens. With the motto, "Caringfor patients like family," the AWCA Home Care Agency is recognized bythe community as a successful home care provider thanks to the sacrificeand hard work of the agency's nurses, staff members, and home healthaides.

AWCA는 2003년 뉴저지에서 주정부 홈케어 자격증을 획득한 최초의 단체이며, 현재 한국 및 중국 시니어들을 대상으로 주정부 면허를 소지한 가정간호관리자가 간호 서비스를 제공하고 있습니다. "가족과 같은 마음으로 환자를 대하는 것"이 모토인 AWCA 홈케어는 간호사, 직원, 가정간호사의 헌신과 노력으로 지역 사회 내 성공적인 홈케어 단체로 인정받고 있습니다.

Meet Our New Office Staff!

Daniel Chung, senior programcoordinator & accountingDaniel graduated from Montclair StateUniversity with a degree in businessadministration. With a special heart forserving the senior population, Mr. Chunguses his experience to coordinate theKorean, Chinese, and Japanese seniorprograms, and also takes care of the AWCAaccounting.

정 다니엘, 시니어 프로그램 코디네이터 & 경리 담당정다니엘 선생이 시니어 프로그램 코디네이터 겸 경리업무를 담당한다. 뉴저지 몽클레어주립대학에서 경영학을 전공한 정선생은 특별히 어르신들을 섬기는 마음과 경험을 살려한국, 중국, 일본 시니어프로그램에서 일하며, AWCA 회계업무를 함께 맡고 있다.

Rachel Kang, program directorRachel began working at the AWCA asprogram director in January of 2015. She isa graduate of Johns Hopkins University, andholds a degree in Cognitive Science(neuroscience/psychology), and is asecond­generation Korean­American whogrew up in New Jersey. She first came towork with AWCA through the SATScholarship Class, and will use herextensive experience working with childrenand youth to oversee the AWCA JuniorProgram.

강승희, 프로그램 총무강승희 선생이 2015년 1월부터 AWCA 프로그램 총무로 일을 시작했다. 강총무는 존스홉킨스대학에서 신경과학 및 심리를 전공한재원으로 뉴저지에서 성장한 2세이다. 2014년 여름 AWCA SAT 스칼라십 클래스에 교사로 인연을 맺은 강총무는 특별히 어린이와 청소년 프로그램에 오랜 경험을 살려 앞으로AWCA 주니어 프로그램을 책임맡게 된다.
