About Indira Gandhi National Open
University:-
The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) was
established by an Act of Parliament in 1985 to provide cost-
effective quality education to large sections of population
including those living in remote and far flung areas. Today, it
serves the educational aspirations of about 2.4 million
students in 33 countries through twenty one Schools of
Studies and a network of 61 Regional Centres, more than 2300
Study Centres and around 53 partner institutions abroad.
IGNOU offers 325 Certificate, Diploma, Degree and Doctoral
programmes .The prime objective is reaching out to the
hitherto unreached sections of the society. Access, quality and
equity are IGNOU’s guiding principles.
About The Programme:-
The Diploma Programme in Watershed Management aims at
developing competent human resource in the field of
Watershed Development /Management. It intends to impart
basic knowledge and skills for water harvesting, conservation
and utilization ;soil erosion and its management ; integrated
farming systems including crop husbandry, animal husbandry,
agro forestry , fish farming; funding, monitoring, evaluation
and capacity building of watershed programmes besides
extension and communication skills for long term socio-
economic development of the society.
It will provide the basic understanding of various activities
undertaken during watershed management. It also intends
to:-
Develop human resources for watershed development;
Introduce the principles of watershed management approach;
Generate awareness of sustainable development and
maintenance of natural resources; Mobilize and build capacity
building of rural youth, women and landless.
Programme Structure :-
The Diploma Programme consists of seven courses
(Integrated with practical) and one practical course on
project formulation equivalent to 32 credits ( one credit is
equal to 30 study hours):-

Eligibility Requirement:-
10+2 pass/Bachelor Preparatory Programme (BPP)
from IGNOU.
10+2 pass can enroll simultaneously for the BPP and
the Diploma programme.
Salient Features of the Diploma Programme
The study center will be in the campus of Birsa
Agricultural University (BAU), Ranchi
The first course will be started from July 2011
session.
In order to claim the fees concession, the candidates
shall submit concerned certificates issued from the
competent authorities.

MODE OF SELECTION: Interested Candidates directly or
indirectly working in the IWMP Project from different
stakeholders will be selected to enroll the DWM Course. The
first session will start from July/August 2011 consisting of 50
Candidates and session session in the month of January
2012.The duration of the course will be One Year and the
classes will be held through distance education and the
practical classes will be held in the Government
holidays,Weekends etc….
IGNOU’S RESPONSIBILITIES
Providing Prospectus/ Programme Guide / reading materials/
assignments / Soft copy/ others as and when required to

selected candidates. Arranging theoretical classes, practical
classes and exposure visits .Providing assignment evaluation
feedback report to candidates. Providing grade card,
provisional certificate and original certificates to candidates
after successful completion.
Act as a linkages between JSWM and BAU.
BAU’S RESPONSIBILITIES
Provide basic facilities for conduct of theoretical and
practical classes.
Conduct of theoretical and practical session under above
said courses.
Conduct of exposure visits as and when required.
Arranging faculties for conducting classes.
Act as a linkages between JSWM and IGNOU.
Conduct of evaluation /examination as per IGNOU norms.
People’s Participation
Key responsibilities of JSWM
JSWM along with IGNOU regional centre will scrutinize
and finalize all 50 candidates as per the IGNOU norms.
The course fee for 50 candidates under watershed
committees will be paid from Capacity Building budget of
sanctioned IWMP projects.
JSWM will act as a linkages between IGNOU and BAU.
Student Support :-
Learning Materials: The printed study material will be sent to
the students by post.
Audio-visual learning aid: The learning package is
supported by audio and video CD’s and cassettes prepared by
the university.These are available at the designated study
centres. They will be usually held during the
weekends/holidays.
Tele-conferencing: Through Gyan Darshan Channels and
EduSat.One Gyan Darshan channel is available on DTH
platform.
Job opportunities: Passouts of this programme may start
Self Entereneurship or join as soil
conservation/agriculture/horticulture inspectors,
agroforestry surveyors, water harvesting supervisors,
livestock assistants, watershed inspectors in Govt/ NGO
dealing with watershed projects, Urban housing boards, real
estate builders, ground water boards.
