RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT LABORATORY

AKROS R&D Laboratory is located in Khimki, in the premises of the Chemical Diversity Research Institute, a partner of the ChemRar Group. The laboratory is equipped with state-of-art testing facilities to research and design new solutions for drilling fluids.

The central laboratory performs tests for the incoming quality control, conducting extensive research related to issues and problems arising during drilling operations in the fields. We work in close cooperation with the Chemical Diversity Research Institute to find solutions for chemical engineering and to design new additives with improved properties.

Now the R&D Lab works in cooperation with several Russian and global producers of chemicals. The Lab is involved in research and development of new shale inhibitors, rheology modification agents, fluid loss reducers and other products. Our priority is to develop our partnership with the local vendors, and to support pilot chemicals manufacturing projects.

SYNTEXSYNTEX –is a fresh water-based system based on acrylic polymers.

This system is used in thick shaly intervals to reduce mud volumes, as well as to reduce mud dilution requirements. It is optimal for drilling deviation wells in the oilfields located in the Western Siberia and in Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug.

APPLICATION

to drill deviated wells designed for frac simulations;

to drill high penetration rate wells from the same pad;

to reduce drilling fluid costs;

to drill in closed loop systems equipped with flocculation units (it is the most efficient use).

LIMEX LIMEX – system is a fresh water-based mud with lime (calcic) content. The system composition and properties may vary dependent on the use conditions. The system is designed with respect to the use of lime-based drilling fluids, when drilling deep exploration wells with AHFP

to drill deviation wells in the Urals-Volga Region; to drill deep exploration wells in the areas with abnormally high

formation pressures.

UNIDRILUNIDRIL – is an oil-based drilling fluid. The oil-based drilling fluids have the following advantages versus any other water-based systems:

outstanding inhibitive properties, low friction coefficient, low filtration level and full absence of water in filtrate, high stability of mud parameters, high tolerance to the cuttings content, high tolerance to contamination factors (cement, formation water, etc.), recycling capability.

MAX-FLOW MAX-FLOW – system is a special drilling fluid used to drill in the productive intervals and pay zones. The system was designed under specific requirements applied to the primary well drilling operations, which exclude the use of any products and components contaminating production formations, such as barite, bentonite, acrylic polymers, etc. Polysaccharides easily degrade in the bottom-hole conditions, either naturally, or during any near well-bore treatments. The system is easy to mix and to condition in the field, it does not require any special processing equipment. The composition of the system can be optimized dependent on the drilling conditions and formation properties; it may include different bridging materials, salts and inhibitors

PRIMOSOLPRIMOSOL – system is an inhibited drilling fluid based on polyanionic cellulose and xanthan gum. The composition of this fluid was designed with respect to the extensive experience related to the use of inhibitors in the Russian oilfields. The system may be mixed and conditioned with sodium chloride and potassium chloride. The inhibitive properties of the drilling fluid controlled by the proper selection of the mineralization of the mud, and/ or by the use of additional inhibitor.

APPLICATION

The MAX-FLOW system is optimal:

to drill horizontal wells and to complete wells without cementing

for horizontal sidetracking

to drill exploration wells and to take core samples, when it is necessary to provide minimal filtration and to maintain natural permeability;

to mix composite fluids for well perforation, workover and well service operations (such complex compositions may reduce any possible kill fluid losses and prevent contamination of the productive intervals).

to observe the restrictions related to the mud volumes, including mud disposal volumes

to properly drill through the pay zone in the deviated wells before perforation

H-FLOWH-FLOW SYSTEM – is a specially designed drilling fluid for drilling in high-density reservoirs. This system is used to drill horizontal sections of the wells under abnormally high formation pressures.

Special chemicals and polymers allow maintaining barite-free mud with specific gravity above 1.30 g/cm3 and up to 1.9 g/cm3

MUD SYSTEMS WITH FINE GRADE BARITE

The composition has been designed based on the modified starch and fluid sweeps with appropriate pH to ensure good structural bonding.

It does not contain any biopolymers.

Mud cake may be removed by acid treatment.

It is possible to use appropriate chemicals to properly adjust completion fluid properties using salts of heavy metals.

Fine-grade barite is mostly used to prepare water-based and oil-based drilling fluids characterized with high density and low rheological properties. As a rule, a mud system shall have improved structural properties in order to provide appropriate sedimentation stability for heavy-weight mud systems. The sizes of colloidal particles of fine grade weighting agent may significantly reduce rate of sedimentation, thus creating conditions for the use of mud compositions with lower rheological properties.

SYNTHETIC MICRO-COLMATANTMicro-colmatants (plugging agents) are mostly used to improve the stability of boreholes drilled using water-based mud. Fine particles of mud seal micro-fractures, and prevent the penetration of filter cake into the structure of unstable clays and shales.

FUNCTIONS

A new synthetic colmatant (plugging agent) is a mixture of special water-soluble and oil-soluble polymers. Dependent on the base of the drilling fluid, some polymers dissolve completely, while some of them form aggregates varying from 5 to 800 micron. The aggregates form elastic membrane, which prevents penetration of filter cake deep into formation, thus strengthening the formation under the overbalance pressure conditions. In minimal underbalanced conditions this membrane is easily removed due to the absence of the inner filter cake. This additive may be used to drill the production interval with the minimal risk of reduction of permeability in the bottom-hole area.

MEX-BLOCK OB

TECHNOLOGY OF WELL-KILLING OPERATIONS WITH REDUCED IMPACT

MEX-BLOCK OB – is a double-action reversible invert emulsion drilling fluid designed for completion of wells in hydrophilic conditions, and for safe well killing.

The system may be mixed with any oil base, including diesel fuel;

MEX-BLOCK ОВ system is used to rectify implications related to any fluid losses when conducting workover in high-permeable and porous reservoirs by means of smooth gradual well killing.

it is designed for well completion in open hole conditions, and for wells requiring prompt removal of mud cake from borehole for continuous production. MEX-BLOCK OB is able to convert hydrophobic conditions into hydrophilic conditions through pH adjustment.

OPERATIONS WITH REDUCED IMPACT

MEX-BLOCK – is a mud system designed for well maintenance and for workover. MEX-BLOCK is an optimized mixture of polymers and acid-soluble plugging agents (colmatants), which enables to prepare appropriate mud compositions without any special equipment on the drilling site. This mud system prevents losses of killing fluids, it also prevents contamination of the bottom-hole area and enables to promptly place the well into operation after workover.

FLOWVISION: DAILY REPORTING PROGRAMThis program has been designed to collect and to process the data related to drilling activities for further generation of daily reports.

Mud engineer shall enter drilling fluid parameters, chemicals inventory data, and recommendations for mud treatment and drilling parameters on a daily basis. The program may generate several types of summary well reports, thus allowing to analyze and to improve mud circulation programs based on the previous experience.

RHEOVISION: HYDRAULICS PROGRAM The program is designed to make appropriate hydraulic calculations when planning the well and while drilling; it can be used to conduct a wide range of hydraulic calculations:

determination of pressure losses in different components and sections of the drill string, on the bit, and in the annulus;

calculations of three different rheological models;

analysis of equivalent mud weight values at the pump under different circulation rates;

evaluation of upward velocity in the annulus; assessment of cuttings removal efficiency, including determination of cuttings concentration in the annulus;

the program can also be used to properly select and to optimize bit nozzle performance with respect to maximum hydraulic force on the bit.

BRIDGING: PROGRAM FOR SELECTION AND OPTIMIZATION OF CALCIUM CARBONATE FRACTIONAL COMPOSITION

A special program to properly size the optimal fractional composition of calcium carbonate is used in order to protect the production zone when using appropriate drilling fluids.

Calcium carbonate is supplied by AKROS LLC in different sizes of particles specially separated by the manufacturer and confirmed by appropriate quality certificates.

The program includes the data related to distribution of sized particles based on the known fractional compositions of supplied brands of calcium carbonate.

The program may be used to design optimal combinations of available fraction sizing based on the actual geological information provided by the client.

Proper sizing of substance particles allows minimization of mud cake penetration into the formation, reduction of instant filtration, and formation of mud cake with minimal possible thickness, which can be easily removed during well completion.

DRILLING OPTIMIZATION SERVICES: GEOMECHANICAL SIMULATION

AKROS LLC has executed an agreement with the Russian PETRO GM to cooperate in the development of geomechanical simulation and engineering.

Geomechanical models may provide the following data:

VACUUM DEGASSER The AKR series Vacuum Degasser is a special-purpose device for quick gases removal from the drilling fluid. Invasive gases removal is a significant treatment process aimed at returning mud gravity, stabilizing viscosity and reducing drilling cost. Moreover, the AKR Vacuum Degasser could also be used as a heavy-power agitator ensuring further treatment by desander and desilter.

WASTE TREATMENTTHERMAL DESORPTION SYSTEM

Thermal Desorption of Drill Muds and Cuttings was first used in the beginning of 1990s. Hence, this technology was improved significantly due to the introduction of the stringent environmental requirements and standards followed by the increased recovery of hydrocarbons. The amounts of hydrocarbon mixtures used in drilling fluid systems have increased due to the use of diesel fuel, mineral oils and wide range of synthetic oils.

Different types of hydrocarbons are present in drilling wastes. Drill cuttings include drilled rock, water, oils, crude oil and different additives used in drilling fluid systems. The

wastes contain hydrocarbons mixed with water and cuttings, as well as different emulsions and hydrocarbons from the pores of drilling cuttings.

The treatment technology is based on the thermal processes resulting in evaporation of liquids from drilling cuttings, including: hydrocarbons and water. Water evaporates first, turning into water vapour, and hydrocarbons evaporate later, as they have a higher boiling point. Hydrocarbons are separated from water during the two stage condensation process, based on the same principles.

The hammer mill generates large quantities of heat during the grinding process, thus breaking cuttings and removing liquids, including pore fluids. The design provides reduction of thermal energy to minimum and simultaneous removal of liquid components with recovery of hydrocarbons for further re-use in oil-based drilling fluids.

DEWATERING

Dewatering unit is designed to reduce drilling waste disposal costs by processing drilling wastes and by recycling water, which can be re-used to mix drilling fluids, or for any other technical needs. The unit also converts large amounts of waste drilling fluids to a small volume of solids, thus significantly reducing associated waste disposal costs.

The Dewatering unit function is based on physical and chemical process of coagulation, when fine suspended particles in the treated fluid collide with each other and stick together, forming larger particles, which are further removed by the centrifuge. The unit treats drilling waste water, it recovers waste drilling fluids, and provides safe disposal of mud components in dedicated landfills.

For mobilization and installation purposes, the unit is integrated in the standard shipping container, which can be transported by any carriage, provided all appropriate transportation requirements are properly identified and met.

CUTTINGS DRYER

FUNCTION

A Cuttings Dryer can reduce total oil-based mud losses thus decreasing the volume of cuttings, while drilling wells using an oil-based drilling fluids.

APPLICATIONS

Offshore and onshore projects where the recovery of valuable drilling fluid from cuttings, as well as recovery of oil-based mud and return to the active system are the priorities.

PROBLEMS

More stringent cuttings-discharge regulations have pressured operators and drilling contractors to reduce drilling waste volumes and recover premium products for reuse.

SOLUTIONS

The cuttings dryer features a state-of-the-art design that can process varying amounts of cuttings and fluids, typically up to 60 tons per hour. Dry solids discharged from the dryer are typically <5-6% oil content.

Drill-cuttings re-injection is an economically sound and environmentally friendly, long-term solution for cuttings disposal in remote areas. The available field-proven practices allow to minimize costs and HC emissions typical for the other drilling wastes disposal methods. Also, this method excludes any other current or future liabilities related to the cuttings disposal.

It is a waste disposal technique where drill cuttings and other oilfield wastes (such as mud slurry, old drilling fluids, waste water from the rig) are mixed into a slurry with water and pumped at high pressure into hydraulically created fractures below the surface for safe disposal of such wastes.

PROBLEMS

Storage, treatment and disposal of drilling cuttings in the environmentally sensitive areas and in severe weather conditions may create serious problems for economics, logistics, production and obtaining of appropriate permits and approvals. The oilfield waste management is one of the most critical challenge for the Russian oil and gas industry.

ECONOMICS

Storage and transport practices used for further treatment and disposal of wastes present additional challenges, that can be extremely costly for each project. Transportation of wastes is often impossible due to the poor weather conditions. In some cases, such restrictions may seriously affect the project and make it non-profitable. The cuttings re-injection system has been thoroughly developed and designed to settle such problems by treating cuttings on the rig, or in adjacent areas, thus reducing or excluding the necessity to transport cuttings from the rig or to truck them to distant locations. This approach gives an opportunity to the development of new oilfields, which were inaccessible due to the lack of road infrastructure.

Cuttings skips are designed for containment and transfer of drilled rocks and other wastes produced from well drilling. The design of cuttings skips provides heavy-duty durability and reliability, that’s why cuttings skips are widely used in offshore drilling, where the most stringent requirements are applied.Due to portability of equipment and for stacking convenience, drill cuttings collected in skips may be shipped by water transport, as well as by road and railway transport. The cuttings skips may be used under extreme temperatures

from minus 40°C to plus 50°C without deterioration of strength and sealing properties.
