SQUASH UPDATE The Riverina Squash Trials were held last Friday and a huge congratulations to Brianna Gray-Mills, Cooper Holmes and Dion DeMamiel for making the team. They will compete in the CHS Championships from 2nd-4th July in Thornleigh, Sydney. Our Opens Girl’s squash team consisting of Brianna Gray-Mills, Dakota Boardman, Tayah Preston and Adele Thompson played their first round against Wagga Wagga High School and had an easy win 4-0. They then came up against a very handy Hay War Memorial High School team and went down 0-4. Our Opens Boys’ team consisting of Cooper Holmes, Dion DeMamiel, Blayne Thompson and William Rawle have played their first round against Young High School and won 3-1. They will now play Hay Memorial High School. We thank all our players for their commitment to continuing to make Leeton High School competitive in the sport of squash.

Open Girls Rugby Union Our Open Girls Rugby Union team travelled to Wagga to compete in the CHS knockout competition. The team had a mix of experience from those who play each weekend with the Leeton Diana’s, some who played in the finals in Sydney last year and several who have never played Rugby Union before. The first game was against Tumut High, which started out at a quick pace and was very physical. As the game progressed, our girls started to control the game and came away victors 25-5. In the second game the girls played Yanco Ag and quickly dominated all facets of play. The girls started the game by kicking off but quickly regained possession and scored thanks to the hard runs by Jemma Ah-Nau and Talise Rudd. The girls scored another 3 tries by half time, led by Felicity Allen at half back. As the second half started our reserves started to take the field and never let the team down. Brooke Schmetzer’s first experience of Rugby was tackling a hard running forward front on with great effect. Olivia Price followed up with good support play helping to secure the ball. The final score was 37-5 Leeton High’s way. In the final the girls came up against Wagga High, and in what ended up being a lop-sided score, Leeton won 37-0. The backs started well with Sarah Allen and Emily Wright easily accounting for the opposition in both attack and defence, while Molly Wright hit her straps in the forwards and was everywhere on the field. Again the girls with little rugby experience excelled and Teneal Preston-Warr scored two late tries in the final game.

RESPECTFUL RESPONSIBLE LEARNERS

All the girls performed at a high level, led by those who have experience in the game and backed up admirably by those just starting to learn the game. As a result of their very successful day, the girls have been crowned Riverina Champions for a second year in a row, and will now head off to Sydney to play in the State finals on Wednesday 31st July. Good luck girls and well done.

CONGRATULATIONS!

Congratulations to Evan Johnston, Maanu Alexander, Chase Lee and Bella Franz for entering an original piece of poetry or short story. Each of these students has progressed to the next round of judging and will have their compositions published in the 2019 Write4Fun Anthology. Alanya Skewes HT English/CAPA

Live Below the Line – Maria Tynan Year 10 Maria is participating in the Live Below the Line initiative starting next Monday. Live Below the Line is a fundraising campaign that helps Australians take action on poverty. It is a challenge that sparks thousands of conversations about poverty across Australia and is sponsored by Oaktree, who started Live Below the Line in 2010 as a way of enabling Australians to engage with the issue of poverty and to take meaningful action on it. Since then, over 50,000 Australians have raise more than $10 million for education and campaigning initiatives that help fight poverty. This year, thousands of participants, including Maria, will be putting change on the menu by feeding themselves on $2 a day for five days. That’s the Australian equivalent of the extreme poverty line. By taking the Live Below the Line challenge, Maria and others raising much-needed funds for work that helps end poverty.
