UUnnii--tteecchh A revolution in augmentative and alternative communication

and learning support.

Uni-tech is the new high-tech / low-tech, hand-

held, low-cost communication and learning support

system that enables you to print your own sound-

enabled communication pages and teaching

resources – then simply touch the cell, symbol or

word to speak words and play MP3 sounds using the

specially developed Voice Pen.

This powerful, flexible system is available at a cost similar to many low tech communication aids. The 'V Pen' and paper-based communication boards are lightweight, portable, and very simple to use and support. The V Pen also benefits from long battery life and low maintenance costs.

What is Uni-tech?

Uni-tech is 'future' technology that turns an ancient concept (a 'pen and paper'!) into a modern, affordable communication and learning system.

Uni-tech is a simple to use and support, highly flexible, ultra-high tech, portable communication system that is suitable for people of all ages and abilities - literally from PMLD to PhD. It has many advantages for learning support. Anyone can use Uni-tech, as long as they can hold the V Pen and have reasonable hand control.

Uni-tech can be used by people with no literacy or who are just starting with AAC. The flexibility of Voice Symbol software enables you to create paper communication boards / pages that will allow the user to grow their communication and learning without changing system or hardware. Just print a more advanced communication board as the learner develops, or add communication pages to your book!

Our pre-printed V Boards, however, are suitable for people looking for a very powerful, efficient, portable communication system at an affordable price - they combine a strong focus on core-vocabulary (the 400 or so words that make up around 80% of what we say) with fixed symbol/word locations (which helps motor patterns develop, improving communication speed) and a spelling keyboard - portable, lightweight, unobtrusive!

There are several components to the Uni-tech system:

V Pen - the hand-held speech generating device that reads out loud the

sounds off your printed page, simply by touching the cell, symbol or word. These sounds may be spoken words, music, or any other MP3 format sound. More than 11,000 English words are stored and more than 5,000 words each in French, German and Spanish. The V Pen is typically worn on a lanyard and its 2 AAA batteries provide very long battery life for uninterrupted communication.

V Boards - pre-printed core-vocabulary communication boards developed by

a team including speech & language therapists, special education and other professionals, led by Tony Jones M.Ed., B.Ed.(Hons.), Cert.Ed.Man., Cert.Ed.Res., Cert.Ed., author of several very popular AAC vocabulary programmes. V Boards are available with either text or symbols.

There are currently six standard V Boards, approximately A4 in size, which are either two sided (the 216 board) or in a 4 page layout. Click on any of the thumbnails to open a pdf of the V Board.

Software - simple software that enables you to print your own sound-enabled

communication boards / pages (Voice Symbol software) and teaching resources (by converting Microsoft Word documents using Voice Ink software). Both software programmes feature patented Voice Ink technology.

V Pads and V Create - other media for storing

sounds, to label your environment, enable the user to read a book or participate in games; or create temporary, reusable communication and activities boards.

Accessories - there is also a range of accessories and product bundles, adding

to the flexibility and making Uni-tech exceptional value for money.

Page 4: Ability World 2010 catalogue

Who can use Uni-tech?

Uni-tech can be used by anyone who can hold the V Pen and has reasonable hand control. You can use one of our pre-printed core-vocabulary 'V Boards' or design your own communication pages using V Symbol software, so Uni-tech can be used by people of all levels of ability and literacy.

As a communication aid, it is suitable for children and adults:

Who use symbols, spelling or word-based systems to communicate

With a wide range of disabilities (including cerebral palsy, autism, Down’s Syndrome, motor neurone disease, stroke, multiple sclerosis, etc.)

Of any age, from pre-school, through school / college, to adults with acquired disabilities and the elderly

This new technology also has many other applications for supporting people with other learning needs, for literacy support, foreign language teaching, for people with low vision and many others.

Who else will benefit?

Children and adults who rely on AAC for their communication

For many people, the V Pen is the ultimate “out of the box” £600 product. If you opt for one of our pre-printed V Boards, you can literally press the power button, touch the paper and start talking straight away! It is highly intuitive and really is that simple. The V Pen and communication boards/books are simple yet powerful to talk with, unobtrusive, lightweight and portable. The V Pen's 2 AAA batteries provide long battery life for uninterrupted communication. Its unobtrusive style makes the V Pen both inclusive and 'cool'.

Those who need additional learning support

Voice Ink software gives you the power to create sound enabled teaching resources, adding a new dimension to learning support.

Speech & language therapists, teachers and support staff

Giving you the flexibility to quickly and easily design and print your own sound-enabled communication boards and teaching resources using Voice Symbol and Voice Ink software, adding words, music and other sounds to paper takes minutes. Touch the paper with the V Pen to hear the words or sounds. Copy sounds and messages onto V Pads and label your environment or use them for a variety of activities. Use V Create sheets as temporary, reusable resources and communication boards.

Family members and care staff

The technology is non-threatening, easy to understand and support, and inexpensive to maintain. Light weight and portable, it’s perfect for transporting and easy storage, and as the V Pen uses 2 AAA batteries, no overnight charging is required.

Budget holders

Uni-tech will help you meet many individuals' communication needs at an affordable cost. For some people its light weight, low cost and simplicity will make it the V Pen exceptional value alternative to high tech aids.

The V Pen

The V-Pen™ is a revolutionary new AAC communication and learning

support concept from Unlimiter. It is very simple, but the technology

involved in making it seem simple is very advanced.

For several years, a team of over 20 software engineers, with input from many other

professionals, have worked to put together the technologies that enable the V-Pen to give a

voice to paper and ink.

The V-Pen is a code reader. It ‘converts’ the codes into an audible output (speech or sound

or music). As such, the V-Pen is a new form of Speech Generating Device (SGD). The ‘codes’

are contained within the ink that is used to print the page. Not all printed materials have

these codes ‘hidden’ within the ink, so it is no use picking up a Bible and trying to read

Genesis with the V-Pen: that simply will not work! However, if Genesis were to be printed

using the Voice Ink™ system then, that is exactly what will happen!

Voice Ink is one of a range of patented programs that can be used to create your own printed materials for the pen to read.

Voice Ink can import any document from a Microsoft office source (2003 and above only) and convert it to a form that can be

printed with the codes hidden inside the printer’s ink. Any good quality colour or laser ink jet printer will work. You will find that

laser printers are a little quicker to load the coded pages than ink jets, with the latter taking a couple of minutes for a larger

document.

Two software programs are available from Ability World, Unlimiter’s UK representative. The programs are called Voice Ink and

Voice Symbol. While you do not necessarily need to purchase either of these software programs (as the pen can work with a

number of ready produced communication Boards and Books), without them, it will not be possible to create your own

materials for the V-Pen to read. As the V-Pen can ‘read’ text, photographs, drawings and symbols, the available Ability World

programs can deal with one or more of these aspects. Each provides a different form of printed output: see below.

Voice Symbol Software

Voice Symbol™ is an easy way to create communication boards and books

that actually talk. Simply choose the size of overlay that is required, select

and place symbols into the cells and print. A No-Tech communication board

instantly becomes a Uni-Tech speech generating device! When the pen is

placed on the symbols, they speak out their vocabulary. If a number of

symbols have been selected to create a sentence, then whole sentence can

be read back by selecting the SPEAK function. The cells are not limited to

vocabulary, but can store any sound file, the symbol overlay could become a

musical jukebox!

Voice Ink Software

Voice Ink™ can convert any Microsoft office document (2003 on) into a form

that can printed with sounds on the page and read by the V-Pen. When you

import your Word document into Voice Ink, if there are words that Voice Ink

knows are not already stored in the V-Pen’s memory (over 45,000) it will

automatically generate the necessary speech files and let you know that

‘synchronization’ is required. Don’t panic, it’s easy – just connect the V-Pen

to the computer via the USB cable provided and let Voice Ink do the rest. If

your document uses everyday English, it may not be necessary to

synchronize at all. Bring your educational materials to life: text can be read,

pictures can speak, questions can be asked .

Page 6: Ability World 2010 catalogue

V Boards

V Boards are ready printed communication boards featuring either text or symbols. They come in a variety of sizes with a

different number of locations providing access to different vocabulary sizes. There are presently 6 communication boards

available: three texts boards and three symbol boards. Each of the V Boards contains a range of frequently used vocabulary

(CORE) that has been arranged by part of speech and colour coded (Fitzgerald key) for easy retrieval. The three sizes presently

available are 96 location Inside shown left), 216 location 432 location.

The V Boards are laser printed paper overlays contained in a white, four-page, A4 size, plastic folder. The picture left depicts the

middle two pages when the board is open. Touching the V Pen to any symbol generates speech output. By touching the pen to

the letters (qwerty layout) it is also possible to speak out a word which is read out aloud when the space is selected after

completing the spelling. Spelt words can also be combined into a sentence output.

If it is considered that the V Boards are not suitable for the particular needs of an individual or individuals then it is possible to

create your own V Boards or Books using the Voice Symbol software (see above) which can be purchased separately.

Memory cells

A memory cell is a location that can be used to store a sentence that has either been:

- built from the boards by using words;

- built from the boards by spelling;

- recorded directly into the pen.

There are three types of memory cells that can be used with the V-Pen:

- ready-made memory cells located on the V-Boards and V-Create;

- build-your-own memory cells using the V-symbol Plus software;

- purchase special adhesive memory pads (V-pads).

Memory cells can be re-recorded over and over again. Storing a new message erases the older message.

Voice Symbol Memory Cells

Build your own memory cells with the Voice Symbol software. The cells can be printed at a variety of sizes up to a single

sheet of A4. The cells can either be blank, or with text, or printed using a symbol, picture, or photograph.

The V-Pad memory cells will adhere to any smooth flat-ish surface and can easily be removed and re-used elsewhere. It is

possible to draw on the surface with a (non-permanent) felt tip pen (using any colour but a black felt tip) to represent the

message that has been stored.

Voice Create

Voice Create is an A4 wipe clean white board consisting of 20 locations on one

side and 6 Voice Paper Lines on the other. Draw your symbols (or write some

text) into a location and use the V Pen to store any vocabulary there. Each time

the location is accessed subsequently the message will be spoken out loud. At

any point it is possible to change the stored message.

Using everyday coloured, wipe-clean, felt-tipped pens it will be possible to

create an almost instant disposable augmentative communication system!

Use it to do the shopping list, to order in a restaurant, to conduct a survey, or in any other creative way. Then, wipe it clean

and create a new instant communication system!!

On the reverse of the V-Create board is the Voice Paper Line system. Write a message onto any one of the lines and store

the message in the location provided. By turning the board around, you can create a right or left handed version.
