ABC+D Approach
Session 6: Secrets to
Intestinal Health
Intestinal Tract Intestinal Tract
• Breaks down and absorbs nutrients
• First line of immune defense against pathogens (bacteria, viruses, fungus, etc.) and chemical irritants
Healthy Elimination • Two to three times per day (depending on number
of meals eaten) • No straining or difficulty in passing • Stool is in long “banana-like” pieces about the
width of your index and middle finger • No foul odor • Stool should be solid, but should break up
slightly upon flushing • Transit time should be less than 24 hours • Stools should not float like corks or sink like
stones
Causes of Constipation
• Dehydration (lack of water) • Lack of fiber • Intestinal inflammation • Stress (colon spasms) • Lack of exercise • Lack of digestive enzymes • Imbalance of friendly flora

Colon Myth-Busting The Truth
• The material passed on colon cleanses is not “lodged” in the colon (if it was laxatives would remove it)
• This material is formed by the interaction of bile and perhaps toxins in the colon with the fiber being taken
• It is cleansing, but not in the way people think
Leaky Gut: The Real Problem
• When intestinal membranes become inflamed they lose their ability to filter toxins and microbes
• In other words, they “leak”
Causes of Leaky Gut • Inflammation of the gut lining,
brought on by any combination of the following: – Antibiotics – Alcohol and caffeine – Prescription corticosteroids (e.g.
prednisone)
• More causes of intestinal inflammation and leaky gut – NSAIDS (ASA, ibuprofen,
indomethacin, etc.) and aspirin – Diet high in refined carbohydrates – Prescription hormones (birth control
pills, etc.) – Mold and fungal mycotoxins – Free radicals
• Still more causes – Parasites like giardia lamblia,
cryptosporidium, etc. – Bacteria like helicobacter pylori,
klebsiella, citrobacter, etc. – Chemicals in fermented and processed
food (dyes, preservatives, peroxidized fats)
– Enzyme deficiencies

Metabolic Problems Caused by Leaky Gut
• Intestines do not absorb nutrients correctly when inflamed which can cause fatigue and bloating
• Large food particles are absorbed which contributes to food allergies and autoimmune situations like rheumatoid arthritis and fibromylagia
• Immune function is compromised increasing chemical sensitivities
• Leaking toxins burden the liver
Health Problems Associated with Leaky Gut • Abdominal discomfort • ADHD • Arthritis • Asthma • Autism • Autoimmune diseases • Bloating • Candida • Celiac disease
• Chronic fatigue syndrome
• Depression • Dermatitis • Diarrhea • Eczema • Environmental illness • Fatigue • Fever
More Leaky Gut Problems
• Food allergy • Inflammatory bowel
disease • Irritable bowel
syndrome • Memory problems • Multiple chemical
sensitivity
• Pancreatic insufficiency
• Psoriasis • Sinus Problems • Skin rashes • Toxic feelings
How Health Breaks Down • The intestines become inflamed due to an
irritation of some kind • Inflamed tissues swell, increasing the porous
nature of the intestines • Toxins and large undigested molecules are
allowed to enter the blood and lymph through the damaged intestinal membranes
• The liver tries to neutralize these substances for elimination through the bile and kidneys
• Liver becomes overwhelmed and the fluids of the body become increasingly “toxic”
• Glandular system is stressed trying to increase elimination and maintain balance
• Tissues become increasingly inflamed due to the toxicity
• Chronic disease arises from inflammation
