The President’s Message As I start this message for the June edition of the bulletin, I am swamped with ideas of what I want to mention. First, of course, is a huge thank you to all of you who supported the Lavish Luncheon – whether you attended, recruited donations, contributed to the study/interest group raffle baskets, purchased raffle

tickets or worked on the planning committee from the branch and foundation.

Although we do not have all the final figures, suffice it to say that we will be able to help more young women in their pursuit of higher education. In case you were wondering how this works, the foundation, established in 2007, is the organization that can ask for and receive tax-exempt donations to support the activities of the branch that we are all striving to achieve. The foundation does not have members but is run by a board of directors linked to our branch. If you would like to become more active by serving on the branch or foundation board, please let me know.

The book sale committee is up and running. You should have received an email with the opportunity to sign up for jobs during the weekend and the Thursday before the sale. If you did not, you can access the sheet at:

    https://www.signupgenius.com/go/70a0448afae2fa3fe3-september

The book sale is Sept. 6 through 8. Moving and pack up day is Thursday, Sept. 5. While you are making your plans, keep in mind that we can use stronger backs and legs than most of us have. If you have a husband or younger person who could help on Sunday afternoon to help with the packing up, etc., after the sale, it would be appreciated. You can sign them up on the website also. Other jobs taking place over the summer are being featured in another column in this bulletin.

Through these projects we can offer scholarships to deserving young women who graduated from either Birmingham or Bloomfield Hills schools or are attending Lawrence Technological University, Walsh College and Oakland Community College. We have increased our allocation to OCC to include more local women. We are also sponsoring two young women and helping send a third young woman from OCC to the National Conference for College Student Women Leaders later this month at the University of Maryland. This conference is the premier leadership conference for young women in the country.

So, when people ask, “AAUW, what’s that?,” you can tell them that we are a group of women who care about the future of young women. We are those women who are trying to advocate for all women whether that be for workplace conditions and salary or for access to affordable healthcare. Should I go on? Remember that when we look around and think, “Someone should do something about that?,” we are the someones.

Have a great summer! I hope to see many of you at the book sorting site during the summer, at the sale in September, and at the “Each One Bring One” open house on September 11th where we will kick-off our 100th year as a proud branch of the American Association of University Women. Sally Doty

Gerrie Barclay was honored on May 3rd at the Birmingham Community House as this year’s AAUW Birmingham Branch Diversity Champion.

For seventeen years Gerrie was a bilingual coordinator and teacher in the Fitzgerald School District, which included eighteen different languages.

Beyond leaving her mark of dedication on her special students, she has worked tirelessly in many organizations such as NOW’s Diversity Council, marched to pass the Equal Rights Amendment, and was a member of the Birmingham Temple for Humanistic Judaism - which helps support a Muslim Syrian family of refugees. She is active with the League of Women Voters, the National Council of Jewish Women and the Detroit Association of Black Organizations.

Gerrie’s mission in life is equality for all women and respect for all cultures and religion. Her life reflects her passion.

AAUW Birmingham was proud to support Gerrie Barclay this year as the dedicated diversity champion that she is. For the Branch, Carol Pyke

Northside Book Club began over thirty years ago. Although nonfiction books are normally chosen, next year one or two historical fiction books will be added to the mix. The book list always includes a wide diversity of reading on many different subjects, excluding religion and politics.

All attendees read the book which results in a lively discussion led by a member facilitator. One year club members took a field trip to Lansing to see a display on passenger pigeons after having read, Feathered River Across the Sky: the Passenger Pigeon’s Flight to Extinction, by Joel Greenberg.

Three of the books read this year: Born a Crime: Stories from a South African Childhood by Trevor Noah, The Glass Universe: How the Ladies of the Harvard Observatory Took the Measure of the Stars by Dava Sobel, and Educated by Tara Westover.

Meetings are the 4th Monday at 1 pm in members’ homes. Light refreshments are served. Northside is a very friendly social group that welcomes new members.

Four members shown on the right are - l to r: Millie Saylor, Sue Longstreet, Margaret Douglass, and Roberta Russ. Mem-bers missing from the photo are Cindy Clement, Sue Meneilley, and Sally Kendrick.
