at ¬ titude of Attorney General W H El- lis who was In the city several days last week The transfer of state property requires the signatures of all members of the Internal improvement- board and It is understood that the at torney general refused to affix his signature to one deed for two reasons the first being that he did not think the land claimed to be wrth 20 per acre should be sold for one dollar per acre and secondly if the land was sold he insisted that a good share be given to the school fund which is nearly a million dollars in arrears be ¬ cause the last legislature although liberal in the matter of making some appropriations provided no means whatever for raising funds with which- to meet the educational needs What will he the final outcome of this deal- in which Harris Duval of Santa Fe New Mexico is interested remains to he seen The announcement that Governor Broward had practically concluded the immense deal above referred to the contract for which provides that the pin chasers complete the drainage of the vast area of land was received with pleasure by the Metropolis read ¬ ers throughout the state and it is hoped that it will be consummated The sale of the lands would give the state a large amount of muchneeded money would guarantee the drainage of the Everglades by pivate capital and would take the question out of politics and the courts which in it ¬ CHAMPION WITH THE AX Edward Moot of Vermont Cut and Stacked Five Cords of Wood- In One Day The Shah of Persia during a recent visit to England refused to become enthusiastic over a horse race or even to attend it He said he knew very well that one horse could run faster than another and it didnt make the least difference to him which horse it was The recent Olympic games In London which aroused great intorest and some enthusiasm in various parts- of the world did hardly more than demonstrate that one man could run thirtytwo miles in a shorter space- of time than another man that one man could throw a hammer further than another that one man could jump higher than another and so on through the list of exercises of brawn and endurance that are called sports But in the whole list there was not one gainful everyday oc ¬ cupation represented among the sports It seems that when an ath ¬ letic exercise has to do with work and not play or amusement it is not to be classed as a sport wherefore the public is not interested in records for plowing ditching railsplitting nail ¬ ing on shingles wheeling raw bricks- to the kiln and the like That is why a recent woodcutting contest against time in Vermont the other day at ¬ tracted the attention of only a few men who had a dispute among them ¬ selves as to how much wood could be cut and corded by an expert axman In a day And yet it will be admitted that a contest of this kind is valuable in that it sets a mark of earning ca ¬ pacity for the man who cuts cordwood for the support of his family Some weeks ago several gentlemen in Washington were discussing wood chopping when a Mr Evarts said he knew of woodsmen in Vermont who could fell chop split and stack five cords between suns Another man from Alabama or maybe It was Geor ¬ gia doubted that any such record- coulds be made He said he something abouf cutting cordwood that two cords was an average days- work that three cords were excep I tional that four cords might be accomplished by an expert but didnt believe the limit could be car- ried to five He was willing to back his judgment and knowledge of wood ¬ cutting with a wager Mr Evarts accepted the wager the other gentle ¬ men fell in on one side or the other and quite a neat purse was made up- I The contest was held one day recent ¬ ly It was witnessed by a railroad president an assistant secretary of the United States treasury one or two United States senators several newspaper people and a few others Edward Moot of Vermont was the chopper selected by Evarts He went into virgin bass woods hear Windsor Vt at an early hour accompanied by his witnesses and with the first peep of the sun struck his first tree When he had finished his five cords from the standing tree to the woodpile he had one hour and twentyeight min- utes ¬ to spare with still half a cord- on the ground ready to be stacked He received 100 for winning the wager for Mr Evarts Moot is about fortyfive years of age He stopped chopping twenty minutes during the day to eat and momentarily two or three times to take a swallow of bran ¬ dy and milk When he had finished he declared himself strong enough to- go for another cord which he said he would put up in the time left before sunset Was not this performance quite as creditable to Edward Moot as if he had run a mile in twofifths of a second less time than another man- e wonder if then are woodmen in Georgia who can do five lords or bet ¬ ter in a day Savannah News WANTED- The Kings Daughters are in need of lothing for four children aged four to hirteen years a woman ELLIS IS OBSTINATE

Attorney General is Holding Up theEverglades Deal

That there is many <t slip twixtcup and lip is too old an adage forreiteration and it is as truthful asold

Recently several interesting rumorshave been afloat regarding immense

of Everglades lands but no salesf unusual magnitude has been con ¬

that is no definite official an-nouncements

¬

of conclusion has beeniven out for publication although

have been some decidedly bigdeals in the air including that of 1

500000 acres for as many dollarsmention of which was recently made inMetropolis

At least one deal however seems tohave hung fire on account of the at ¬

titude of Attorney General W H El-lis who was In the city several dayslast week The transfer of stateproperty requires the signatures of allmembers of the Internal improvement-board and It is understood that the attorney general refused to affix hissignature to one deed for two reasonsthe first being that he did not thinkthe land claimed to be wrth 20 peracre should be sold for one dollar peracre and secondly if the land wassold he insisted that a good share begiven to the school fund which isnearly a million dollars in arrears be ¬

cause the last legislature althoughliberal in the matter of making someappropriations provided no meanswhatever for raising funds with which-to meet the educational needs Whatwill he the final outcome of this deal-in which Harris Duval of Santa FeNew Mexico is interested remains tohe seen

The announcement that GovernorBroward had practically concluded theimmense deal above referred to thecontract for which provides that thepin chasers complete the drainage ofthe vast area of land was receivedwith pleasure by the Metropolis read ¬

ers throughout the state and it ishoped that it will be consummatedThe sale of the lands would give thestate a large amount of muchneededmoney would guarantee the drainageof the Everglades by pivate capitaland would take the question out ofpolitics and the courts which in it ¬

self would cause the people to sighwith relieffetropoJls-

A CHAMPION WITH THE AX

Edward Moot of Vermont Cut andStacked Five Cords of Wood-

In One DayThe Shah of Persia during a recent

visit to England refused to becomeenthusiastic over a horse race or evento attend it He said he knew verywell that one horse could run fasterthan another and it didnt make theleast difference to him which horse itwas The recent Olympic games InLondon which aroused great intorestand some enthusiasm in various parts-of the world did hardly more thandemonstrate that one man could runthirtytwo miles in a shorter space-of time than another man that oneman could throw a hammer furtherthan another that one man couldjump higher than another and so onthrough the list of exercises of brawnand endurance that are calledsports But in the whole list therewas not one gainful everyday oc ¬

cupation represented among thesports It seems that when an ath ¬letic exercise has to do with workand not play or amusement it is notto be classed as a sport wherefore thepublic is not interested in records forplowing ditching railsplitting nail ¬

ing on shingles wheeling raw bricks-to the kiln and the like That is whya recent woodcutting contest againsttime in Vermont the other day at¬tracted the attention of only a fewmen who had a dispute among them ¬

selves as to how much wood could becut and corded by an expert axmanIn a day And yet it will be admittedthat a contest of this kind is valuablein that it sets a mark of earning ca ¬

pacity for the man who cuts cordwoodfor the support of his family

Some weeks ago several gentlemenin Washington were discussing woodchopping when a Mr Evarts said heknew of woodsmen in Vermont whocould fell chop split and stack fivecords between suns Another manfrom Alabama or maybe It was Geor ¬gia doubted that any such record-coulds be made He said hesomething abouf cutting cordwoodthat two cords was an average days-work that three cords were excep

I tional that four cords mightbe accomplished by an expert butdidnt believe the limit could be car-ried to five He was willing to backhis judgment and knowledge of wood ¬

cutting with a wager Mr Evartsaccepted the wager the other gentle ¬

men fell in on one side or the otherand quite a neat purse was made up-

IThe contest was held one day recent ¬ly It was witnessed by a railroadpresident an assistant secretary ofthe United States treasury one ortwo United States senators severalnewspaper people and a few othersEdward Moot of Vermont was thechopper selected by Evarts He wentinto virgin bass woods hear WindsorVt at an early hour accompanied byhis witnesses and with the first peepof the sun struck his first tree Whenhe had finished his five cords fromthe standing tree to the woodpile hehad one hour and twentyeight min-utes

¬to spare with still half a cord-

on the ground ready to be stackedHe received 100 for winning thewager for Mr Evarts Moot is aboutfortyfive years of age He stoppedchopping twenty minutes during theday to eat and momentarily two orthree times to take a swallow of bran ¬

dy and milk When he had finishedhe declared himself strong enough to-go for another cord which he said hewould put up in the time left beforesunset Was not this performancequite as creditable to Edward Moot asif he had run a mile in twofifths ofa second less time than another man-

e wonder if then are woodmen inGeorgia who can do five lords or bet ¬

ter in a day Savannah News
